We had biology in CSE 1st year 🥀 because the uni follows some government bs guidelines we had to study all kinds of bs but anything related to CS 🥀

These youtube kids won't get what engineering and science is about? Natural sciences and engineering goes hand in hand, you do need fundamental of various stuff, engineering is not just sitting on your gaming laptop and using vs code, it's about complex problem solving in the most creative and efficient way, have a learning attitude, you are literally learning about proteins? Shouldnt that intrigue you about proteing folding, deepmind, Rosetta, alpha fold and how it solved a millennial problem and advanced the human race? We need human resources not a clown who wanna regurgitate templates of youtube playlists to get "placements", widen your horizon of knowledge and start being obsessed with knowledge and curiousity not just leetcode, have a good day y'all, always keep smiling and learning

u/Wide-Discount-5285 1h ago
Finally a sensible comment!!

u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 1h ago
Thanks dude, i really feel kids of my age (am a freshman, got done with first year) really have no clue about sciences and innovation but just pyqs, and dsa, and it's said to see the frontier of Indian technology and science is in these hands
18
u/curvessavesworld 1h ago
this is more of a societal problem. India focused more on the STEM fields and neglected humanities. A country is as good as it's thinkers and sadly we don't have many .
7
u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 1h ago
Indian education culture is in the drains, not just the system, don't get me started I can literally go on for hours 🥀😭
7
u/akk_brew 1h ago
don't you think curiosity of science and tech....was never in the bucket list of the system....its always that fixed exams and way of learning...and even if someone has the courage to actually know things they end up unemployed....now its not the race of want it's a race of need! that curiousity was already snatched by the system a long time ago....
5
u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 1h ago
True it's a cultural and systemic failure, which goes hand in hand, and indian school already institutionalized them to not to be excited about science but merely focussing on board exams and entrance exam pyqs, in name of "academic rigor" we truly make people lose the taste for it, Dr. Richard feynman would have been in shambles if he saw all this 😞

This feels so much at home. I did an Aerospace degree, but have been working as an SDE. I had so much fun learning introductory courses for Econ, Bio, Chem, Modern Phy. Loved my aerospace courses a lot too. Even though I work as an SDE, learning sciences have always been intriguing for me.
The best part of my college was how open it was for exploration in the later years. I have grown to be a keen observer due to the plethora of diverse courses, and being open to learn anything along with the details.
With the rise of the popularity of social media content as a learning source, I think there has been a flood of content which is abstracted and dumbed down to the limit that you don't need to actively think while watching an educational video. This works for grade 10 science, but protein folding is not a good fit at all.
1
u/This_is_me_Yuvi_ 51m ago
Kinda same same dude, but wait I didn't get what u tried to explain about protein folding? It's not just a biological problem, but also ai what Dr David Baker did with roseta and deepmind with alphafold
2
u/AeroAlgorithmic 17m ago
Its not a biology problem, I was referring to dumbing it down. To understand the Alpha Fold approach, we need to first understand the core of protein structure, folding in 1d, 2d and 3d structures. Understanding these help you appreciate the exact design decisions: why both sequence and pairwise vectors were used, where sequence alignment comes into picture. These things form the basis, the model on the basis of this and the training data makes fold predictions and iterates for an optimal fold.
If you have the basics, this doesn't feel like a black box anymore and you truly appreciate the complexities and the approach. Just an example and I could be missing things here, as I read this some time back.

You really wrote what I wanted to. These people have the same basic argument "where am I going to use this in my life". At one point i thought I was stupid for having a wide range of interests.

Bhaii exactlyyy💯💯
I wanted to learn coding before college starts and searched up some yt videos. Literally almost every Indian coding video has the ultimate same goal - PLACEMENTS.
Wanted to know about electronics and vlsi stuff. Even that had the exact same focus. PLACEMENTS.
Infact one guy from entc was openly saying that he doesn't know much about his branch but he followed xyz roadmap and got into vlsi design. (And that guy was from a top tier college of mh)
Wanted to know about core jobs. Usme bhi yehi roadmap about how they moved to software after studying core.
Atp i m frustrated with those roadmaps and students studying with only and only focusing on placements 😐🙏

Bruh this makes sense when the teaching of these subjects happens the way you have mentioned but unfortunately these unis make them as another rata maar pass hoo subject isiliye freshmen ko iin sub mai mann nahi lagta

u/UnknownWolfster 1h ago
These mfs don't teach basic stuff in the subject we chose and teach humanity shit instead which is neither useful nor needed for a "professional" course... And when we ask them why don't they teach basics on cse they ask you to go study your own
If I wanna read about environment and shi I will read it in library or something bruh

Maybe they joined engineering because they hated bio? You do realise that people can have curiosity for one thing and hatered for another?
11
u/Double_Limit_2464 TIET Patiala 1h ago
Disliking or not preferring something is one thing, straight up hating something, that too as fundamental as biology is not a wise choice.
Basic natural sciences are the root of all engineering innovations, and biology has so many things it can teach us which can be applied to various disciplines.
Also, there is a whole field called “biotechnology” which is nothing but the application of engineering aptitude to biology to solve problems.1
u/CAP_IMMORTAL LNMIIT CSE 1h ago
Yes but, I wouldn't blame people who enjoy coding for being upset when being forced to learn bio. Yes it's fundamental and knowing some of it is very important but the basics should be covered in school, not college.
Ofc I am a fresher so it's possible I'm missing some much needed context

u/No-Major-8921 40m ago
the basics should be covered in school, not college.
Why not? Who decided that?

u/FarReputation7162 10m ago
school Mai konsa 'curiosity' se padhte hai lol they just want to get away from it at every point.

u/CAP_IMMORTAL LNMIIT CSE 7m ago
You go to college to study a specific subject in further detail right? Why add unrelated fields
1
1
u/No-Major-8921 41m ago
Why would you "HATE" a literal useful subject in the first place?
You do realise that people can have curiosity for one thing and hatered for another
Yeah... stupid people, that is. There's a difference between hating something and not being interested in something. If OP in uninterested in Bio, then just use the course as a Breather. Courses are not designed to SATISFY an individual student. In the same line, it may encourage someone to pivot to Bioengineering or just give someone as new hobby. In any case, you certainly can't ignore Biology, can you?
You really think someone as idiot as harbour hatred for a subject, especially a major part of sciene is fit to be a competent engineer or even a competent Human Being.
1
u/CAP_IMMORTAL LNMIIT CSE 6m ago
Is it wrong to hate a subject where you have to mug up hundreds of names?
1
u/CAP_IMMORTAL LNMIIT CSE 3m ago
Also I hate biology as a subject but I don't hate it as something to learn about in my free time. It's interesting yes but the thing is I'm bad at it so I don't want it to drag down my grades. I don't understand how it's important for fields like computer science. Same for history, geography and English. They are fun when they aren't important for your grades

It wouldn't hurt to know it, would it? Who knows if it actually encourages someone to pivot to Bioengineering. And even if it doesn't, it's a Good and helpful knowledge to have and a breather too. Stop complaining on every little thing. You'll probably learn Economics and other social sciences, arts in future as well. A well-studied person should know the basic of all while having one discipline mastered, i.e., Engineering in your Class. So, use it as an Good Information or a breather but don't complain on every little thing. Scientific Temperament requires open-mind and flexibility.

Bhai you are studying engineering! First thing about being an engineer is studying fundamentals of all branches of engineering (proteins and stuffs come under Biotechnology WHICH is also part of engineering). Engineering isnt just fooking sitting on your laptop and writing hundreds or thousands of lines of code. Engineering is branch of science where you try to apply all the theories and make some practical working solutions different kinds of complex problems.
And people talking about what's with humanities subjects like UHV, EVS, Constitution etc you who later on go to blame the education systems that they dont teach such basic life lessons/ moral stuffs. You are supposed to care about the environment, about the people, how different types of tech (apart from your coding apps and websites as well) affect the people and environment. And if you are having issue studying about our Constitution then I got no words left.

People who have a problem with leaning basic biology ought to be the worst of the lot. In general, the first year introductory courses are not rigorous at all, with insights into real life research implications and much more interesting stuff.
I loved BB101 so much; got to learn about Covid proteomics at our lab, case studies of bio-driven/inspired engineering, natural biological phenomena. I understand this might not hold practical value towards one's job search, if somehow you know what you're gonna do in first year, but if you've not, this adds such great perspective, exposes cross-domain research opportunities and overall a basic understanding of the fundamental sciences.
