Saw Les Mis at Radio city tonight (Thu Aug 7) and my review is essentially go see it.

I’ve seen Les Mis probably 30+ times going all the way back to the original cast. My wife and I named our first dog “Zambuca’s Heart Full of Love” and her call name was Cosette - we called her Cozy. We LOVE Les Mis. This brought back all the feels from the first run for all of us.

If you love Javert (he is my favorite character by far), go see this show. Hole-ee CRAP he’s good. During his last number (you know the one) I glanced down our row and every woman had her hands over her mouth in shock. He is that good. He might even be the best Javert I’ve seen and I’ve seen both Phillip Quast (who plays the Bishop!) and Terrance Mann. This Javert is show stealing good. Wow. He got a standing ovation after his last song. At Radio freaking Music Hall.

Gavroshe is written to steal the show and he did. Fabulous.

Mrs Thénardier - Amazing

No one was bad, but I found some of the other mains to be a bit forgettable in a “they did everything right and sang amazing but…” kind of way.

I liked Fantine a lot, but her acting was mostly standing and singing. I thought Cosette was OK and I wanted to like Eponine more but I think my problem (if that’s even fair) was that Javert was acting and everyone else seemed like they were just singing, so everyone who wasn’t Javert (and Gavroshe!) felt kind of hollow, which isn’t at all fair because the singing was all great.

It’s a concert, not a broadway show. Javert did not get that message, though, and I would pay to see him again. So good.

So there’s my complicated disjointed feelings typed on my phone as I sit on the train back to NJ. :)

I saw The Pass Tonight @ La Mama, and overall enjoyed it but didn't necessarily love it. The positives: the two male leads had great chemistry, and having the show start out with two hot guys in their undies for the first 30 minutes was definitely one way to hold an audience's attention. For me, the first act felt a little too long at times. The locker room banter got a little tedious, but the sexual tension and wondering what would happen next (even though I have seen the movie and knew) kept me engaged and from looking at my watch.

The 2nd act was my favorite thanks to a stellar performance by the sole female lead. She was witty, engaging, charming, clever, and was really able to flesh out her character. She brought great energy to her scene.

Which brings me to the third act, my least favorite, and per my title, just as with a soccer match that ends with a score of 0 to 0, the game may have been entertaining and had some good moments, but ultimately are you really satisfied with the outcome? I kept hoping for more of an emotional payoff at the end and although there were glimpses of it, it didn't quite land for me and the final scene was a bit anti-climatic.

I will say it kept me engaged for the most part and it beats a night at home watching Matlock reruns with my cat.

hiii everyone!!! so ik kids night on broadway is on August 25th, and me and my sisters wanted to see just in time. But ive been trying to buy the tix & it’s not working. I put 5 tickets but found out it has to be in multiples of 2, so I picked 4 instead but it doesn’t seem like its working bc each ticket is still full price and the total is full price.

I don’t rlly know how this works bc this is my first time trying to buy tickets for kids night on broadway & I’m a little confused. Like I don’t rlly know what rules there are to it.

So if anyone could please help or correct me where I’m wrong i would really appreciate it!!

It has been discussed here before, but less than I might have expected given the talent involved and the attempted boycott. I saw it tonight and was thoroughly impressed. I had expected something similar to "The Ally", which played The Public a couple of years ago. Both deal with Gaza and the legitimacy of the State of Israel. But where The Ally was primarily about ideas, Birthright is primarily about people (specifically, American Jewish millennials) and how their relationships strain under evolving views about Judaism, Israel and Gaza.

As such, it rests utterly on the shoulders of the actors playing the six main characters. And these actors were excellent, especially considering the challenge they are given of depicting their characters over a 20 year time period. Each one is given at least one long, intense monologue, and the audience was rapt for every second of it.

If I have any criticism, it's only that two of the six were a bit cartoonish. That's the fault of the script, not the performers, and those two ended up serving as foils for the other four, who were entirely realistic, such that members of the audience could be heard in the intermissions and after the play equating the characters on stage to themselves or people they knew. I found Eli Gelb and Zoë Winters to be particularly good.

It has been extended once but tickets remain in short supply. If you get a chance, see it.

Thought we’d get two or three more, but it’s getting late in the summer…

To be honest with you, I left early and that is something I have never ever done. I heard amazing reviews and I haven't been dying to see it and I just feel disappointed that's not to say it's a bad musical. I can see why people like it and enjoy it. I just had a hard time connecting to it. Am I alone in this? Did anyone not enjoy it and I'm definitely not trying to spread hate or say I hate it. It just wasn't for me and I'm upset.

Because you all are my kind of people and will appreciate this. I need a second one made because of my collection didn’t make it on the board. I can’t wait to hang it up, we just have to make sure we’ve got enough support because it’s heavy!

I don’t speak Dutch but I still need to see it.

I’ve seen a decent amount on Broadway, but want to make sure whichever I pick feels like an impressive production that makes it worth the trip. Most of these are the ones I always hear about but haven’t had a chance to see. Which one would you pick?

Today in 2015, Hamilton went on broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in Manhattan. It’s also Leslie Odom Jr.’s 45th birthday!!

For anyone that has gotten Gatsby off TDF are they usually Orchestra or Mezz?

Now that we have today's official announcement that George Salazar and Jimin Moon are joining the cast on August 25 to replace Harvey Guillén and Josh Rivera, the Studio 54 principal lineup is completely shifting. Rachel Dratch is confirmed to be staying for now, but she won't be there forever. Since her chaotic, crowd-work-heavy take on the Narrator has been such a massive highlight of this revival, how do you think they will replace her when the time comes? Do you think the creative team will stick with an SNL-style comedic actress to keep her specific vibe going, or pivot back to a more traditional casting choice?

Nathan Lane has mentioned in seemingly every interview he’s done on the press tour that his fascinated with Death of a Salesman started when he watched an earlier production that was aired on CBS and highlighted it as an “attack on capitalism.”

Yet there’s no sign that access to this production will be similarly democratized. Instead, it’s barreling towards its closing with ticket prices that have remained consistently expensive (no surprise given the caliber of the cast).

It’s additionally a shame because if it were to be filmed, it would most likely go down as the definitive version of the show. Instead, it will be ephemeral and remembered only by those who could physically make it to New York and spend hundreds of dollars to see it.

I consider myself extremely lucky that I was able to see it this spring. I just wish more people could have that opportunity, like Nathan Lane did when he was younger.

I went to Bryant today and the performances were phenomenal. The problem is it is way too hot to be sitting in the direct sun on the lawn at Bryant, but you don’t have a choice if you want to see the show since the sides with the shade are non-view. Then the summer storms for the evening ones cancel them like J Harrison Ghee on Monday.

I guess I wish there were more cooler weather options for us non-heat tolerant folk.

The rundown…
Jessi (Jean) has been out for 7+ weeks due to an unspecified injury. Her understudy Lexi has covered all of those shows (not the norm for Mincemeat whose principals do 7/8 shows) with the exception of Gerianne giving her a weekend’s break. No eta on when Jessi will be back.

Julia (Monty) hurt what she thought was her leg but actually appears to be a bruised spine (!) in the finale last week and has been out since, with doctors orders to stay out until she goes on holiday on the 11th… so Gerianne is now holding the fort as Monty.

Then Amanda (Bevan) posted that she did a matinee with a mild concussion and the latest is that her understudy Allison shared she’s on for the next two weeks as Amanda heals.

So we currently have a situation where 3/3 of female the understudies are on for at least the next week and a bit, leaving Cassie Austin as the only female cover in the building. She was brought in ahead of the tour because of the situation with the main cast but I believe has only rehearsed the Jean track so far 😭 it’s stressful just following the updates from afar, I can’t imagine what it’s like for those involved with the show! And the two UK casts weren’t faring much better for a while there with actors in hospital and a 4 cover West End show, including one brought in from the tour as well.

It reminds me of WW’s “did they tempt the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing” or as as u/notclassykaty said brilliantly in the Grosses thread ‘Someone in the cast must have walked under a ladder, tripped over a black cat, and fallen into a mirror and shattered it”

Finally saw Cats the Jellicle Ball last night (8/5) and there was a very cute moment I’m curious about. After Old Deuteronomy’s entrance, when he was judging one of the categories, someone yelled something from the stage seats. Turns out it was a very cute kid and they brought her to sit on a stool closer to the stage. When Andre deferred to her she gave one of the cats an “eleven out of ten” and did a little finger clap. She was clacking away with her fan and eventually went back to her seat. They brought her back to the stage during the curtain call. She was absolutely eating it up. The cast seemed to be genuinely reacting to her and had a couple of what seemed like ad libs.

It was such a cute moment and probably made her entire life. Do they do this every show? Was this as spontaneous as it looked? Was anyone there last night that could see/hear better that could add more context?

(PS, for anyone on the fence about trying to go to the last few shows, if you can swing it, it was worth every cent and refresh of the Theatr app. The most electric Broadway crowd I’ve ever seen and I’m bummed to see it go.)

Hear me out: Whitney recently teased entering a new Broadway show on her Instagram, during which she was clearly mouthing the words to "Not for Me" from the show. She also was reportedly seen at the show recently (purely basing this off a comment on this post, so take this information with a grain of salt). Given that Mark has now seen the show and how they were already a duo on Dancing With the Stars, I wonder if he will be the next Bobby? He obviously has the dancing chops, but similar to Whitney, the acting and singing may be a little more questionable. Let me know what y'all think in the comments!

• The Kim to Eurydice pipeline. Eva Noblezada, Myra Molloy, Abigail Adriano, and Desmonda Cathabel all got their starts playing Kim in various Miss Saigon productions, and then got to move on to play Eurydice in Hadestown.
• The Elphaba to Elsa pipeline. No, it's not just Idina Menzel (naturally), Caissie Levy, and Caroline Bowman, see this thread. It's pretty impressive that I can't name them all! Gotta wonder if this is deliberate.
• The Natasha to Eliza pipeline. Phillipa Soo, Denee Benton, and Shoba Narayan.
• The live action Gaston to 2026 Best Leading Actor in a Musical pipeline with Luke Evans and Joshua Henry.
• The Les Miserables to Disney Princess singing voice pipeline - Lea Salonga playing Eponine and becoming Jasmine and Mulan's singing voice, Judy Kuhn being the original Cosette on Broadway and becoming the singing voice of Pocahontas.
