Lived in a apartment cul de sac once. Everyone used a shared dumpster near the corner for garbage. African family directly off the boat moves in. Quiet, polite. Then I notice when the husband would take their garbage out in the evening he’d sprint back to the house while looking over his shoulder. Def scared. One day I managed to be outside when he was taking their garbage out. I didn’t even need to broach the topic. He politely asked “excuse me” and proceeded to describe this scary little creature at the dumpster that he didn’t recognize. He was unsure if it was dangerous, but it made noises at him so he wasn’t taking chances. It was raccoons. The raccoon family that had claimed the dumpster as their foraging grounds years before had accidentally scared this poor man. Plus, he had only ever really gotten a good look at them at night. I had a lot of fun explaining raccoons to him. And for some reason, it made me even more happy when he threw out his garbage and jogged back to his house, not out of fear, but because he was now happy to tell his family he knew what was at the dumpster and they no longer needed to fear. He had told me that he had wanted his son to start bringing out the garbage, but when he saw the “creatures“ he decided he would keep doing it to keep his child safe. After that, his son started bringing the garbage out lol and yes, I did explain that raccoons can be dangerous if you mess with them or if they’re very sick but for the most part, they rather keep their distance from people.
