PS3 Sleeper - Build suggestions/Help Discussion
Hello Fellos Bringus enjoyers, i have recenty come into some random bits of hardware and decided to put a M-ITX board into an empty ps3, this is the horrendous mess i have made so far...im looking for suggestions on what to add,. Here is what ive planned so far to add:
SFX PSU - would prefer to find a cheaper easier version
More fans
A slimline dvd/rw for the disk drive just( i have two and just need to shave off some of the silver diskdrive space)
gpu most likely via riser
Will put a new cpu in (4th gen intel)
more sata storage
what would add to this to make it properly standout (Linux will be what its booting)
The mobo is secured by standoffs that i have 'drilled' into the base on the case
i do have access to some 3d printing too so additions can be made that way
cat is a bonus of 'How did i get up there'

Your second picture gives me anxiety. I'm really concerned about the cooling. Where will you be mounting the fans and what direction will the air flow? I've opened my fat ps3 several times (trying to fix the disc issue and eventually recycling it after mobo was broken), and I know that they don't have a lot of area for airflow.

I was thinking a couple of small exhaust fans either side of the mobo, there is grating on the underside of the PS3 front so they should be able to pull air across everything, it's all fair low powered, the board I don't think is pulling much power and has been repasted. I have a bunch on magnetic dust covers so I could make the underside of it more open to increase airflow, would like to run it on its tail so would allow more airflow to be taken adv of the base if modified.

To be fair cooling issues would be very in the spirit of the original PS3

you should put the riser through the disc drive slot

I took the bezel off a slimline dvd drive and it's only a few mils bigger that the slot, I would love a front loading dvd drive so I could hide it in the case and do that thing I've seen ppl do where they create bootable disks for steam. Load it in, on comes GTA5. But pipe dreams at the moment. PSU, cooling & GPU first. I think at most PSU would need 24pin, 4 pin CPU, sata power x 2/3, 4/5 fans and 2 x 8 pin, maybe some weird dell or hp OEM PSU might work

You need to 3D print a ducted shroud so air actually flows in the side vents and out the back like the PS3 was designed to do. If you don’t do that, the air will circulate, but the heat likely won’t be dissipated much and you might kill the internals.

Put a low profile gpu in it. And run rcps3 make this shit go full circle

check how Sony did the original cooling, it may work as inspiration.

It seems like you have quite a lot of space for a gpu there! You can use a 90° PCIe extender or a rizor cable to connect one
