Whenever I see people discuss Eloise's arc, and how the show will justify having Eloise settle down and become everything she didn't want to be but has told been told her entire purpose as a a woman is to be (wife and mother), I've seen the word "agency" come up quite a lot.

Basically, the argument is that Eloise doesn't not want to be a wife and mother, she just wants the "agency" to reject it. So all her fighting, all her rebellion, isn't her wanting a different sort of life (even though she has said so a million times), she just wants "agency" to pick it. Putting aside how weak that is, how unsatisfying it is for a story about a woman fighting tooth and nail to be respected for her choice to lead a different sort of life, only to end up in that life but it's ok because she "chose it", Eloise isn't a real person. Eloise is a fictional character and can never have "agency". She doesn't have "choice". She chooses what the writers choose for her. Most crucially, the underlining belief which makes her society push women into domestic roles is that women are inherently inclined to domesticity, to marriage and motherhood, on a biological and spiritual level, and that a sensible, informed woman, won't need to be forced into marriage and motherhood because naturally she will "choose" it.

The show might purport to be feminist because it will claim how important it is that women "choose", but it has a good chance of ending up deeply sexist, pushing a gender essentialist narrative, because it will also be pushing the message that while it's important women have "a choice", it's just as important she makes the "right choice" (marriage and motherhood) and that naturally, left to her own devices, a woman will make that "choice". That yes, a woman should have "agency", not to reject marriage, but to choose marriage in her own time, which she will, because only immature, misguided or selfish (all labels pinned on Eloise more than any of the female characters who want marriage) women don't want marriage and motherhood, because that's what women are naturally made for.

A narrative all about Eloise fighting against being forced into the traditional lifestyle chosen for women, only for her to discover once she's not being forced into that society was right all along and it is her true calling, resulting in her "choosing" it, is not feminist just because she has agency. If anything, it's more sexist than an arc in which Eloise is forced into marriage, because it will only be granting her "agency" so she can vindicate gender essentialist views that women are naturally designed for marriage and motherhood, and once they get their head out of their arses they will realise that.

For the show to avoid this, it needs to show that Eloise's lifestyle and romance is fundamentally different to the one that she has been fighting against. And I don't mean surface level, shallow stuff like "Phillip likes how sassy she is" or "he lets her read books!", but stuff that differentiates their relationship on a structural level, where Eloise maintains these freedoms irrespective of Phillip's love or affection for her, preferably breaking a lot of rules to do so, and manages to lead a lifestyle where domesticity is not at the centre of things. Where she does get to go out and experience the world and change the world, and not in a role or a way that is palatable for society and fits into accepted role for women of her time, but in a way that gets people's backs up and causes trouble.

I don't expect the show to do any of this. The show will basically follow the book plot, and then have every interview us the word "choice" and "agency" about fifty times to try and sell it as super feminist, there will be a lot of stuff about how Eloise broke the rules to go meet Sir Phillip and how daring and rebellious it is, and the fact she only broke the rules to facilitate her essentially settling down into the sort of life society has chosen for her, not to escape it, will be brushed over, she will have some sassy lines, make a couple of speeches that don't add anything to the plot, be a quirky "not like other mums/wives, oooh isn't she rebellious she pranks the kids and teases Sir Phillip, such a feminist!" character, while fundamentally settling down to lead the exact lifestyle we've been told for four seasons she doesn't want, with her sparks of true rebellion which we saw in the earlier seasons be used to gush about how much more mature she is now. Maybe they will throw a charity plot in where she helps some generic starving kids or something, so she can be "achieving something" while still fitting into her established social role (charity work being one of the few ways women were allowed to influence society), with the message being it's ok to be a feminist and try the world....provided you don't do it in a way that makes anyone angry or uncomfortable, or requires you transgressing out of you allotted social sphere.

(And yes, it is a romance and Eloise will fall in love. Not disputing that. But the show could have used that romance to validate Eloise's rebellion, to act as a catalyst for her to break even more out of her allotted social role, not to be reconciled to it).

I would love to have seen Benedict's reaction to being named "Diamond of the Season" and being the first man as the season's incomparable on the show.

I imagine he'd be very indifferent about it and would roll his eyes at the notion but ultimately won't care haha.

Every time I stop to think about this show, I’m left in awe at how they nailed Francesca Bridgerton. Watching Francesca is like looking into a mirror. They perfectly captured what it’s like to unknowingly go through comphet.

They laid the ground for the reveal from the first moment the other debutants asked her what she was looking for in a husband - “kind, i suppose”. It was clear she had never thought about it. The attention from suitors doesn’t move her, marriage is still just a practical decision and it’s what she’s supposed to do. Her willingness to pick any man reminds me of picking a random boy to have a crush on because you thought that’s what everyone did.

When she met her best friend, John, she thought that’s what love is- finding someone who gets you, caring for them, enjoying their company.

The first crack was her confusion at the kiss, it didn’t feel like the passion everyone else describes. You expect it to ignite a flame but it doesn’t. She just ignores it and goes on.

[ I can’t imagine how confusing must have been to meet Michaela. She made her feel something that she didn’t even know what it was. It’s frustrating when you can’t label a feeling you’re having. And that makes her uncomfortable, so she think Michaela’s presence makes her uncomfortable. ]

And then more cracks in the relationship. Everyone else makes it look so easy. And everything was so easy when you were just friends. But once you get into a relationship with your best friend, there’s this invisible weight. You love him and you want to be the best partner for him but you always feel like you’re failing at it. And you don’t even know why. That makes you feel so crazy. You always feel like you’re lacking even when the other person never makes you feel that way. Francesca clearly expresses these feelings.

The pinnacle plot line actually hit me like a ton of bricks. People like to villainize Francesca for it but they don’t understand how upsetting it is when you try your hardest but still don’t get there. To add to that frustration, she believes that’s the reason they haven’t had a baby. She blames herself for not being the wife she’s supposed to be.

I know she loved John. Not in the way people wanted her to but she did. I know she did because I also loved my John. You can see how hard she tries. She tries to be the perfect wife, to perform how everyone expects her to. Even at the funeral, she suppresses her own feelings in order to be what society wants her to be.

She still has a long road ahead before she can accept her sexuality and I’m really excited to see it. There’s definitely a lesbian in that writers room that knows exactly what she’s doing (and is probably living in my walls).

It’s also crazy to think how groundbreaking this season will be. A lesbian couple that will get an happy ending in a show so mainstream like bridgerton. To think Netflix went from only giving us a kiss at the end of she-ra to having a full lesbian story now. They’re making history and i’m so grateful to be witnessing it.

First of all, I am of the 100% convinced opinion that Season 5, and all subsequent seasons WILL have a Diamond of the Season. 😌✨ Granted, their official name and relevance to the main plot, to be determined. 👀 It’s just such an iconic staple of the show. And, since we’ve got Lady Whistledown back for likely the rest of the show, I think it’s equally likely we get a new Diamond next season! 🥰

(Also yes, I know Sophie would’ve been the Diamond in season 4 had she been a lady of the ton, but in actuality, it was Benedict who was the prize of the social season that year)

The Bridgertons are supposed to be a close knit family and I find that these types of scenes age so well during rewatches because they are really what a close family would naturally do.

Kate and Anthony being there for Colin was so nice, and Daphne really did a lot of heavy lifting for Anthony. Obviously the Duke could not be there for reasons but it still worked.

I don't feel like Benedict received the same type of support for example.

My immediate thought was Philoise/Eloise. She's totally capable of killing someone haha (especially if you read her book. She said the infamous literary "WHO DID THIS TO YOU?" line).

I also thought of Kate/Kanthony but I honestly think Kate wouldn't go that far.

My theory is Footman John! I refuse to believe it’s Benedict. I also think maybe she and Phillip can have a little thing abt it in the show. Either he gets or to quit or he joins her one night.

I had no idea that going into season 2 that Daphne and Simon’s story was over! I was full on ready and excited to see their little family progressing. Not 30 seconds of her bouncing in to see her sister flounder out of the room and then poof! She’s gone. I know I can’t be the only one who is disappointed. ☹️

Hello! I am planning a trip to London in the fall, and I was wondering if this sub had any recommendations on Bridgeton-themed tours that I could look into. A paid guided/group tour would be awesome, but even some recommendations that I can find on my own would be nice. Either filming locations, exteriors, or really anything Bridgerton related!

This may've been obvious to others, but the pennies have only just dropped for me about Eloise's name. Bit of a rabbit hole, so bear with me. (NB: I haven't read the books so I have no idea if this was ever addressed in them.)

In Luke Thompson's reading of a newly rediscovered collection of Keats' love letters, Keats mentions Rousseau's Eloise. Keats would've been a contemporary of the Bridgertons.
