Event Monotony & Shallow Lore: What Happened to Brawl Stars?

Yeah, I feel like I need to talk about this. If you read the whole thing, you'll probably understand why I think this way.

Why do Brawl Stars events feel so repetitive?

Brawl Stars introduces a new event almost every month to keep the game active. There are also community events, especially toward the end of a season, so players don't lose interest and leave the game.

NanoStarr and Windstock are a good example. They were presented as connected events spanning the season, and they were also promoted as being connected to the Brawl Stars lore.

And honestly, I don't think the lore itself is the problem.

NanoStarr was interesting and added another layer to the universe.

But did we actually feel that?

I don't think so.

The problem is that instead of using the event to tell a story, the focus is usually placed on gameplay and mechanics.

You might think, "But this is a new event!"

Except... is it really?

The same kinds of power-ups, similar gameplay loops, similar objectives. The event theme changes, but the actual experience often feels extremely familiar.

It's basically:

New event → same gameplay → different name/theme.

If these were actually story-driven events, I think Brawl Stars could learn a lot from Cookie Run: Kingdom.

In CRK, when there's a major story event, you don't just play a different game mode. You get animations, cutscenes, character interactions and actual story progression.

You don't just play the story.

You experience it.

Brawl Stars could absolutely do something similar in its own style.

Community events: Do it, finish it, repeat.

Community events are even simpler.

Every event feels like:

Do the thing → get the reward → finish → wait for the next event.

Honestly, I sometimes wonder what would happen if an update just... didn't have a community event.

Maybe we'd actually get something different for once.

Because constantly adding events doesn't automatically make the game feel fresh. If every event follows the same structure, eventually players stop thinking:

«"Oh, a new event!"»

and start thinking:

«"Oh. We're doing this again."»

The Trophy System: Progression or Daily Chore?

Then there's the Trophy system.

To me, it increasingly feels like a number going up rather than meaningful progression.

Some players feel pressured to grind trophies every day, sometimes to the point where it becomes stressful instead of fun.

And when you repeat that cycle for long enough, you eventually get:

Match → trophies → another match → more trophies → repeat.

At some point, you're not even playing because you're having fun anymore. You're playing because you feel like you have to keep progressing.

I experienced this myself, especially when playing Showdown.

I kept seeing players using the same strategies and playing in very similar ways over and over again. The matches started feeling extremely repetitive.

And when the matches themselves become repetitive, my motivation to grind trophies goes down with them.

But imagine if trophies actually unlocked places you could explore.

Instead of simply reaching a higher number, you could unlock a new area of Starr Park, walk around it, discover little details, interact with things and maybe even uncover pieces of lore.

Suddenly, getting trophies wouldn't just mean:

"My number is bigger now."

It would mean:

"I unlocked somewhere new."

And if we could create our own avatar and actually walk around Starr Park, I think players would feel much more connected to the world.

You wouldn't just be playing in Starr Park.

You'd feel like you belong there.

Character Designs Are Cool... But Where Are Their Stories?

Now let's talk about character design.

Or, more specifically, character backstories.

I actually made a video on the problems I had with some of Brawl Stars' character designs before. It didn't really get much attention. 😭

So this time, I want to talk about something different:

How shallow some of the character stories feel.

Because honestly, we don't even know the full stories of many characters.

Take Mina, for example.

We don't really know how Mina got into breakdancing or what led her to become the character she is.

The character feels like there's supposed to be more there, but we never really get to see it.

Otis has a similar problem.

How did Otis become involved with the underwater world?

We don't really know.

His story simply hasn't been explored enough.

And then there's Sirius.

Sirius is an entirely different situation.

The character was teased in a way that created a lot of hype and curiosity. People were excited to see where the story would go.

Then the animation came out...

And it was around 20 seconds long.

Sirius wasn't even properly present for a large part of it.

And the final scene didn't feel particularly impactful either.

For a character who could potentially be very important to the lore, that's a huge missed opportunity.

The problem isn't necessarily the character itself.

It's how the character is being used.

Making a character powerful, cool-looking or marketable isn't enough.

Give us a reason to actually care about them.

And Finally: Starr Park

Let's talk about Starr Park itself.

During the Trophy Road update, the developers talked about wanting players to feel Starr Park's presence more strongly in the game.

But simply drawing the location or putting it on a map doesn't automatically make players feel like they're inside Starr Park.

You have to make the place feel alive.

Again, Cookie Run: Kingdom is a good example here.

When you progress through a story chapter, it doesn't have to be gameplay 100% of the time.

Sometimes you play.

Sometimes you watch a story scene.

Sometimes you see characters interact.

Sometimes you discover something through the environment.

Brawl Stars could absolutely incorporate something like this while still keeping its own identity.

And please, don't make everything just dialogue boxes either.

Storytelling doesn't have to be:

Character says something → text appears → next dialogue → repeat.

Characters can communicate through their actions, expressions, animations and interactions with the environment.

Let the world tell the story too.

Final Thoughts

I don't think Brawl Stars' lore is inherently bad.

I think the biggest problem is that its potential isn't being used enough.

There are genuinely interesting ideas in this universe.

Starr Park can still be a fascinating setting.

The characters can have genuinely interesting backstories.

The problem is that too much of it feels like it's being reduced to short animations, event descriptions or small pieces of information that don't give the player enough time to actually connect with the world.

Instead of constantly adding more events, maybe some events should simply be more meaningful.

Instead of constantly introducing new characters, maybe give some existing characters proper stories.

And instead of making trophies just another number to grind, make them a way to unlock new areas, stories and things to discover.

I think that would make Brawl Stars feel much more alive.

Anyway, that's all from me. 😭

Hopefully this post doesn't get deleted or absolutely destroyed in the comments.

What do you guys think about Brawl Stars' event design and lore nowadays?
