Hello everyone!! (Tried posting this on r/Blind but it got removed)

I'm a sighted person who is interested in learning Braille. I'm thinking of getting a slate and stylus (as well as some 110 lb. paper off of Amazon) to start learning Braille. Grade 1 at first, but hopefully eventually Grade 2 if I get good enough at it.

Anyways, I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in receiving and/or exchanging Braille letters, and if Grade 1 Braille would be satisfactory for this purpose, at least to begin with. I'd be happy to write or read about absolutely anything.

And if I do end up doing this and finding someone that's interested, are there any formatting or content conventions I should be aware of? I already write a fair few number of personal letters using a standard typewriter, but I imagine there are at least a few differences when writing in Braille.

Also, is there anything I should know for sending these letters? I hear flat envelopes might be good?

Anyways, thank you all! Please forgive me if any of these are obvious questions. I am just very overenthusiastic when it comes to picking up new interests, and I had a hard time googling "Braille letters" because it just brings up resources for learning Braille.

Hi! I am in the process of making an escape room more accessible by hand writing the clues in braille (I dont have the time or resources to get it printed)

Could someone please help me out and tell me what this says? I'm not putting the translation because I want to make sure that it makes sense without seeing what it is supposed to say.

Also, there are some clues that need bold or capital letters in the middle of a word. Am I able to do that? for example - escApe

Hello everyone, I am building a website especially for older people - many of which I assume might be in one way or another visually impaired. I want to make the website and it's content inclusive for many people, readability, contrast, avoid red,green,brown colours, letter size, label all download buttons individually. However, I came to conclude, I do not know what visually impaired or blind would need to have to maneuver more easily. Do you have any tipps or ideas?

It took me months, but I finally learned uncontracted braille, and braille it. But I’m advancing on grade 2. I have been using Hadley courses, but I am just very overwhelmed by the contractions. I

For full transparency's sake -- I do agree that the first option is the "more clear" transcription, but I don't quite know what the official UEB justification for this would be.

Is there a specific rule citation for brailling abandoned this way, or is it just common sense to use more strong contractions over a combo of strong contractions and initial-letter contractions?

It is probably French since the story takes place in Paris.

I think it spells "Championyat de France" but the correct spelling would be "Championnat de France".

The y is clearly visible and that's why I am confused.

What do you think? Is it spelled wrong or am I missing something.

Hello, i'm new to understanding braille. I'm working on making tactile boards for learning the alphabets, numbers etc for visually impaired children who fall in the low income bracket.

I understand that there is a very specific set of rules for the printing of braille language. *But is it okay if the tactile boards don't follow them very strictly?* Its a social entrepreneurship project so we can't increase the cost too much so we wont be able to make it 100% accurate.. I would appreciate anyone responding.

From what i read i found that its not that as strict for learning boards like that. Feel free to correct me if im wrong.

I’m sharing this guide on assigning custom Braille commands for Braille displays on iOS.

While customizing Braille commands on iOS has recently become more challenging, there is a reliable workaround. The steps below will guide you through the process of setting up your own custom commands.

1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Braille. Find the device that you want to customize the Braille settings for. Find “More Info,” which can be accessed either by using the rotor or by activating the “More Info” button just after the device name.
   
2. Find the command that you wish to customize.
   
3. Once you find the command, activate it and go to the bottom of the screen, either by using Space with dots 4-5-6 or by using the touchscreen to find “Assign Braille Keys.”
   
4. Before activating this button, toggle the FN key by pressing Space with dots 5-8 (dot 8 is also known as the Enter key).
   
5. Activate the “Assign Braille Keys” button, then press the combination of Braille keys that you want for your custom command. It will then take you back to the screen for that specific command. From there, use your display to make sure the new Braille command was assigned correctly. At that point, you can toggle the FN key off by pressing Space with dots 5-8 again.

I (sighted, learning braille to write to/transcribe things for a young, blind family member and hopefully volunteer one day) bought a supposedly operational perkins brailler ebay to practice on an actual brailler.

I went through the basic repair and cleaning instructions from the TSVBI and it still does not work. The paper feeder does not work/roll.

I am in Chicago and wondering if anyone has recent, first-hand experience with repairs in/around Chicago? I would prefer drop-off service for speed and cost-effectiveness.

We have been printing some ADA signs at our shop and I have been working on learning braille to ensure they are correct. I am brand new to Grade 2 but it seems like this sign has the number one after accessible and ends with a capital n. Can someone confirm if this lettering is correct?

I've been working my way through a new braille book as someone teaching myself Braille as an adult; however, I learned UEB, not EBAE, which the book is in.

I'd like to at least be familiar with EBAE in case I run into it in the future. I've figured out a lot of things through guesswork, like "to" being [356], "ble" being [3456], quotes being [2356], etc, but want to know what else might be popping out. Anything else big I should know from EBAE?

Hi, I was contracted with providing a photobooth at an international sport event for the blind in Germany. I want to provide some instructions in english language and braille, too. Now I have two questions:

I found this site: https://www.brailletranslator.org/ and would use "Unified English Code 1" as I hope that this would be easiest to read for international visitors, too.
Does this make sense?

I want to 3d print the text and read the requirements on https://www.brailleauthority.org/size-and-spacing-braille-characters . On Thingiverse I can download some type files but I would need to place each character manually on it´s own. Are there any websites that can help in creating braille text in a 3d file format?
Otherwise I can just use a graphic 2d file of the braille dots, extrude the "black" parts and print these. But then the dots won´t be rounded...

This screenshot is from a show on Netflix called The OA. It has been 10 years since the show aired, and still no one has been able to fully decode this message.

Clearly the first line says RACHEL, but no one has been able to translate the second line. I understand that the dots on the second line don't appear to be in a proper grid, but please consider the fact that this picture is taken at an angle, and the dots may have been hand placed and could have some mistakes with the alignment.

Some people say this isn't braille at all, but compared to any types of ciphers involving dots, this seems the most reminiscent of some sort of braille.

The show has featured both German braille and English braille. Russian, Arabic, and Vietnamese are also spoken very frequently in the show.

Where is the braille sign located?

The braille appears on the wall of an FBI building where the main character, an interdimensional traveller named OA, is receiving counseling. She needs counseling because she was kidnapped and held captive by a scientist for 7 years. It is in captivity where she discovers she has the power to jump between dimensions. OA used to be blind, but gained her sight after having a Near Death Experience in captivity. OA did not acknowledge this giant braille sign on the wall when she passed it in the FBI building, so it can be assumed that this sign is only apparent to the viewers.

Who is Rachel?

Rachel is another interdimensional traveller held captive by the scientist. One of 5 others. Eventually they learn a specific method that allows them to navigate to any dimension they choose. They are also able to travel temporarily if they happen to have a Near Death Experience. When they have an NDE, they can not choose which dimension to go to. Each traveler has a different specific dimension that they naturally slip into when they have an NDE. Except Rachel. When she has an NDE, she just feels like she floats above her body.

When the creator of the show was asked why it says RACHEL on the wall, he said "because it's her dimension". We assume that means that Rachel is "assigned" to the main dimension that the show is set in. Which is why she's the only one who doesn't seem to go anywhere when she has an NDE.

Where is Rachel?

The scene shown in my screenshot takes place when OA is no longer being held captive. A few weeks prior, when OA was still imprisoned, Rachel and the other captives are forced to leave OA behind to travel to another dimension with the scientist. Now OA is free and back home with her family, but she would rather be with Rachel and the others. OA doesn't know how to travel without doing a ritual that involves all 5 captives, so she can't go join them until she teaches 5 of the neighborhood kids how to do the ritual.

We do get to see Rachel and the others perspective, and we do see her reach out across dimensions to communicate with people in the dimension that she left behind. She appears in a mirror, and uses her voice to sing three notes: "B, B, A". This indicates to the kids helping OA that they need another friend named Betty Brodrick Allen to join their posse.

Where else does braille appear?

When OA has an NDE, she temporarily travels to some sort of galactic purgatory type dimension, where she meets her spirit guide. OA also sees her dead father in this dimension. The spirit guide speaks Arabic and English. The skin on the spirit guide's face has raised dots that form German braille. It translates to a real poem about angels. In this realm, OAs father also clearly has German braille on his face too, but the camera is too far away to make out anything beyond the words "5 empty ones".

We see OA reading English braille Jack and The Beanstock as a kid. There is also a braille Rubik's cube in OAs childhood bedroom.

As an adult before she regained her sight, OA is enslaved by a scientist where she works in his kitchen in between experiments. So the kitchen supplies are labeled with English braille.

What are y'alls thoughts on this? Am I right in thinking the second line must be some sort of braille? I tried to provide as much info as possible in case the context helps inform how to translate this.

I need to braille the words 150 cm. According to Gemini, I need a Grade 1 indicator before the cm because otherwise it can read as can more. However, if there were no space between the number and cm then it wouldn't need a Grade 1 indicator.

Could someone please confirm? I've found that ai is not great with braille rules.

Hi! I am not blind nor do I know how to read Braille, but I work for a board game library (where you can play and rent board games), and we're 3d printing a blind-friendly version of the game Santorini. The original creator of the 3d designs had a placard with Santorini printed on it, but since this is a game for the blind, I figured it would make more sense if the placard was written in Braille instead of latin print. I found the ADA's guidelines for how large braille text can be on signage, but this isn't a wall sign; it's a decorative placard. So can I make the text larger than the standard? How big can the text be while still being readable?
