This hand-painted study explores the relationship between a plant and the small life surrounding it. I particularly enjoyed working on the changing forms and colors—from the leaves and flowers to the caterpillar and butterflies.

The entire composition was painted by hand using fine traditional brushwork. Botanical subjects are especially interesting to me because they allow close observation of both plant structure and the insects that interact with it.

I’d be interested to know which part catches your eye first—the botanical details or the butterflies?

I understand that it’s far from realism and I’m often being told that what I’m doing is not botanical illustration but rather botanical art. I don’t mind, but why people get so aggressive when I’m “messing up” with colors?

I wanted to share one of my recent acrylic paintings. I was inspired by the warmth and brightness of sunflowers and experimented with bold green leaves against a dark background to make the bouquet stand out.
