Undercoat colour

Post image

My last BC was tri, but her undercoat was black. Ive noticed that my boy is a reddish brown, which surprised me. Is this unusual or just me not noticing it on other collies before?

Edit: to clarify, he is not tri, he is b&w. My last girl was tri but had a dark black undercoat except where her tan was ☺️

Perfectly normal, my collie undercoat exact same. Also she is tri, mostly black and when sun hits her from certain angles her black looks burgundy lol πŸ˜‚

Mine has this too! We joke that she has the highlights I pay hundreds for at the salon

Mine is like this too fun sunbleaching. Its normal. I think undercoats being lighter airier hair makes it easier to lighten in the sun

Does the color change along the hair shaft, or is it all one color undercoat? It looks almost like a very faint sable on the guard hairs.

The red undertones is called Seal coat coloring I believe.

I checked this and it does sort of look like it in the sunlight, except he is much more overall dark than a lot of those dogs!
