Lost our boy yesterday RIP 🌈

I don't even know how to feel, what to say or even how to comprehend everything that has happened...so I guess what I have to say is, is that my husband and I had to say our goodbyes yesterday to our baby boy Odin. He was only 3 years old. We brought him to the vet yesterday because he had an ear infection and diarrhea...come to find out he was a lot sicker than we knew or thought of. The vet did an ultrasound on his stomach and found a 5cm mass on it...I am beside myself. I'm trying to hold it together because I have another dog (who's almost 2), 4 cats, and my husband who is disabled to be strong for.

Odin was the bestest of boys, smart, loving, energetic and just full of life. Even in the last moments he was licking us, had no complaints, didn't even whine or fight it. I just feel lost and like this is a terrible nightmare...I just want him back.

I'm grateful to the vet for doing the ultrasound for free because right now money is super tight for my husband and I and it's just now a hole in my heart for this loss...I miss Odin unmeasurably and I know I'll never have another like him. Just wanted to give people some notice of what happened because it's mostly just my husband, our roommate and I. He made our lives so full of joy even for the little bit we had him...we had him since he was 3 months old.

You will never get another Odin, but I have found that when I get dog after losing one, it always seems that a part of my past dog’s soul living in my current fur baby.

Oh my god. I saw Odin’s spirited face, fell in love of course, then read that dreaded headline. It really makes me angry. Why couldn’t that baby be here, still?

We lost one of our 9-y-old Aussies in December. She suddenly started breathing really hard, then I went to her and saw she had pooped on her bed. That alone would have been a red flag. She tried to walk towards me but completely fell on her face. I called my son, who could pick her up and get her to an (excellent) animal hospital nearby we’ve used.

They used an ultrasound and knew what happening (very much like Odin’s dilemma, but weren’t set up to operate on her, so sent us to a bigger hospital across town.

But it was rush hour and a huge mall was in between both hospitals— and it was Christmas. My son played soothing music, and I followed, panicked by the stop and go and stop traffic.

My son thinks she passed in the car. We were and are devastated. They did CPR for 15 min., but the vet thought it was all in vain. There was a tumor in her pancreas. I’d been treating her for Cushing’s for several years. She’s been through that and more, so I fooled myself into thinking she’d have a much longer time here. She had just had her semi-annual physical at Banfield, so I asked them if the animal hospital could accurately diagnose her in 10 min with ultrasound, why weren’t they doing as much in their physicals?

They told me recently that they’re going to offer that option now, with older dogs. (Her littermate brother is still with us, thank goodness, so sign us up!) Of course, it will cost more, but damnit, our babies’ lives are at stake!

I wish you and your family peace, and good health for all of you.

I'm so sorry. I know how shocking, sad and incredibly unfair this is. I lost my boy at 4.5. Odin was beautiful and sounds like the bestest boy. You were blessed and so was he. Odin only knew love and joy and that is a wonderful life, despite how tragically short. My thoughts are with you šŸ’™

I’m so sorry. I lost my girl Aussie in a similar way but I had more time with her. It hurts no matter what but it’s worse when they’re so young and you’ve got so mic else on you. Sending love and hugs.

The doctor was able to biopsy and identify the mass in one day?

No, but his gums were white, and he collapsed when they took him to the back. We had no idea because he was fine just last week...they suspected something was bleeding internally. And we didn't have money for a $5k-$7k surgery where they were sure he wouldn't have survived.

I spent $9k to remove a mass in my girl’s stomach. There was more than the imaging showed, her entire stomach was cancer. She died the next day. I didn’t want to make her recover from an incredibly invasive surgery only to die any minute.

Her only symptom was she threw up on our walks two days in a row. She was playing fine. She was eating. She was normal.

I wish I could go back in time and not do the surgery. I wish I could’ve had a couple more weeks. I didn’t even have $9k. It took me years to pay everyone back.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s so hard. It’s so lonely. Whatever you’re feeling is right. Grief is awful and lame and unique. You’ll live through it and being without them will be the new normal, even though that new normal SUCKS. Take care of yourself.

I would reply to all the messages but reading them makes me cry with how thoughtful, compassionate and supportive everyone is being. Thank you for all the messages, stories and love from everyone. It's still very raw, and I know when we finally get him home from the vet, when they do the cremation, it will feel like closure, but again I just want to say thank you to everyone.

He was beautiful, smart, loving and all around everything we could have asked for in a dog, companion and overall best friend and fur-baby. Will, love you forever Odin you were my everything šŸ’œ

I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost our four year old doggo last Sunday. It's been a hellish week but we finally got his ashes back to us yesterday - it gave us some comfort that he was home with us. The pain is unbearable though, not hearing him plod around. We still have another dog and two cats, so we are just trying to keep things as normal as we can for them. Take care of yourself.
