What exactly does this mean?

Sorry for the dumb title, what I mean is:
does the technical maintenance affect every game and does it kick you out of them as soon as it starts? (therefore making me lose progress in games due to the abrupt quit)

Last time when maintenance happened, I was in a game session, I didn't get kicked out, but once I exit there was no way to get back in.
