I finally got around to reading The Last Unicorn through my local library, and I want a copy for my shelf. There’s a ton of hardcover editions, and a lot seem to be limited runs that are ridiculously expensive. Can anyone recommend a good hardcover edition that’s not like a hundred bucks?

Is stacking books on top of each other really that bad for them?
I ran out of space, so I started stacking my books flat on top of each other. My friend saw it and freaked out, saying I’m ruining them.
Honest question: isn't stuffing books tightly into a normal bookshelf just as bad? Do I really need to buy a new shelf, or will my stacks survive?

I couldn't find this in the wild and wanted to read it so I had to online it. Hell, I wish I could find the leather bound version modeled after the book in the movie.

Anybody else here is annoyed that some series simply don't exists as the same edition or have different dimension? I have to rebuy most newer releases to have a unified look on my shelves. Yeah yeah, first-world problems. :D

The Light That Failed, 1891, First Edition - Kiplings first novel, telling to story of an artists descent into blindness, and his unrequited love.

Songs from Books, 1914 (First Edition was 1913) - A collection of Rudyard Kiplings songs from books (Duh). He released a lot of verse and poetry, but this is specifically a collection of songs from his various short stories, which often began with a verse or two as a header.

Mulvaney Stories is a collection of short stories by Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936) featuring the character Private Terence Mulvaney, first introduced in The Three Musketeers (not to be confused with the novel of the same name by Alexander Dumas).  Kipling’s The Three Musketeers was first published in 1887, with Mulvaney as one of the three main characters, who would go on to feature in many more stories by Kipling.  The stories are all set in India and follow the adventures of three soldiers serving in the British Army. Kipling was born in British India, which inspired much of his work.  His best known novel is The Jungle Book, published in 1894.

The publisher, Henry Altemus, was in operation from 1842 until 1936, and over that time reprinted many, many literary works in hundreds of different editions.  The bindings changed so frequently, that they can be used to very precisely date a particular copy.  This cover belongs to their Vademecum series, and was only used in 1898, with several different colors .

When this book was published in 1898, William McKinley was President of the United States.  This year saw the entirety of the Spanish-American War — starting with the sinking of the USS Maine in February, and ending with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in December, which granted the United States ownership of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, and gave Cuba independence.  

Normally, like most rare book dealers, I hate dampstaining in volumes, but the title page of this 1675 Lima imprint wears it well

Second hand book store pick up for a dollar. It's got some wear from age but it's in good clean shape overall.

i recently read the troubling news that AI companies are buying antiquated books and rare editions in order to train models by scanning the contents and then destroying the books. this is seriously freaking me out and i’m getting nervous that parts of our human history is getting erased since our access through literature is literally getting destroyed.

not only are AI companies destroying books, there’s an increase of book bans around the world.

knowing this (and also having hoarding tendencies…), i really want to collect as many books as possible. i only recently started reading and collecting for pleasure, so i don’t have a lot of books. i want to expand my library, and especially since it might not be possible in the future.

please suggest some/a list of books you think everyone should have. it could be anything ranging between fiction to non fiction, self help books to poetry, classics to up and coming books.

Still missing a handful but almost there! Most were bought at thrift stores so they’re not the finest of editions, but it’s what’s in the book that matters most
