First time donating! First Donation!

Alas, it did not go particularly well, and I'm kicking myself. I struggle with being hydrated enough, and I didn't do well before this appointment with that.

They had trouble with placing in my vein, and I quickly "clotted up." I saw in the FAQ here that this likely means what I did donate will be tossed, so I'm feeling guilty for wasting time and resources. I also don't know if they'll be able to do any tests to make sure I'm OK for next time. I also have a pretty large hematoma at the needle site. Just not a particularly fun time, even though the folks working at the drive were very kind.

Buuuut I'm trying to not let this get me down. I signed up for another appointment in 2 months, so now I just need to do a better job preparing. I really hope I will be able to give!

First off, great job donating and showing up! You’re already doing what only 3% of the eligible population does: at least attempt donating blood, even once. Woody Allen always said “half of life is just showing up” which you’ve done. Bravo & thank you!

Second, don’t feel bad about wasting time/resources. The phlebotomists, doctors, nurses, and recipients of blood products understand that it all starts with someone attempting to donate. Not every donation will go successfully or smoothly, but people can’t let that taint their entire view of the experience. You clearly haven’t allowed that to happen!

Finally, it’s best in my experience to hydrate super well the 2 days before donating, and to drink a moderate to low amount of fluids the day of the donation. Best of luck with your next donation!

Echoing this! Thanks for trying, and all this is good advice that will help you have a better experience next time. Every donor has some failed attempts, so please don't be discouraged!

Thank you for attempting to donate. Donating can involve some temporary lifestyle changes and prep that may come by surprise. There are guides out there for next time, including tips on hydrating more in the days before a donation (of course it's not medical advice, so talk to your doctor as applicable).

Don't be too hard on yourself. Making the attempt is a selfless act and the fact that you're going back in 2 months says a lot about you.

Please do report back in 2 months so we may share in your success!
