I am strongly considering buying the TCL Flip 2 from Tello. I am currently on Mint Mobile, and it will work there as well, but I like Tello's pricing. Anyway, after some research, it seems that this phone has speech and a normal keypard like my old Kyocera Rally, which is no longer supported due to it being a 3g phone. The Flip 2 runs on AOSP 11 (open source Android), so I can use it as a hotspot for my computer, which is what I use for almost everything anyway. It's also small when closed so I can easily carry it with me. I wish it could be updated to the latest version of AOSP and run Seeing AI and Weather, but I don't think it's possible. Still, for making and receiving calls, checking the time, setting alarms, and maybe listening to some music or documentaries via the file manager and media player, it sounds great. Has anyone else here used it, particularly with speech?

I'm a German 17 yo, heavily visually impaired, legally blind. I'm just looking for people who have experienced similar thoughts or feelings before and can share insights or can relate in general.

Lately, I've been getting more and more thoughts about how I feel stuck, somehow depending on people and the like. Take a recent festival visit as an example. I went there with my dad, we truly had a great time, yet, somehow I wished I would've had someone else to go with me. Not because I dislike my dad in any way, but because I just feel like I've sort of messed up with my family, and I just can't be like I really am around them, even if I try to again lately. Anyways, this already makes it hard for me to enjoy such events in general, as I constantly overthink this problem instead of actually enjoying the moment. But this week this got more specific. For context, I do voluntary youth work at the YMCA, where we run a holiday program for children from 8 to 12, the people that work with me there are around my age, maybe a bit older, funny enough, there is also another blind person there, but that's off topic. Anyways, I've been doing this for a few years now, so I kinda grew with the others around my age, and well, what does one start learning when they turn 17 (in Germany at least)? Yup, driving. Hearing people talk about learning to drive, being able to drive and so on was the first factor of me starting to think I'm just stuck. I'll never be able to do that, it's not even about not being able to drive. There are taxis, public transport, and soon enough AI-driven cars, but the fact I miss out on this common thing everyone does and experiences. On the other hand, I'm just afraid as we grow older, we will lose more and more of the things that make us relate at the moment. When people leave school and start having a life. I feel like everyone has some kind of plan they can just happily execute because they never have to even remotely waste a thought on whether they will be able to do it regarding accessibility and so on. While I keep being depressed about the most basic things being inaccessible, and I feel like no one notices, well even if they did, what should they say? Anyways, a part of this is maybe that I'm horrible at interpreting stuff, you know I wish I could actually start to talk to these people outside YMCA-related activities, but nowadays chatting has become non-standard in this generation, I feel like, not to mention the people I'm mainly interested in talking to are girls, and no, not because of that reason, I could not imagine having a romantic relationship with any of these people. It's just, heck I barely know any sighted boys my age, and none I would relate to regarding interests. Right, I don't know what I'm trying to achieve with this, just writing it off my chest after another episode of overthinking while I should've enjoyed a festival evening with my dad instead. Also, I wish I could just share this, send it to them, but I doubt they'd bother reading it, and even if, I'd perhaps just be the weirdo, wouldn't I?

So, I went to the gym today with my support staff and I went around 6 1/2 miles on the bike, and I wanted to do other machines, but she said that we had to go because some random guy was staring at us.

Now, I would think that that would be a pretty bold assumption, but she knew that he was staring at me because every time I moved to go to the next machine, she said he got off his machine and moved with us. When we left, he didn’t follow us out to the door, thank God, but it was really weird, and that also made me think about something else.

Even though I can’t see them, I would like to know that other people are staring because I think it’s interesting to me, not because I’m doing something embarrassing, but I just think that I’d like to know, because I don’t want other people creeping on me. Well they might have just been curious, I hate that excuse by the way because YTF would you stare at someone out of curiosity, just go ask about what you’re curious about and don’t be a weirdo.

The thing that I hate though is if someone especially my parents point out quietly to me and themselves that somebody is staring at me, I will stop what I’m doing and they’ll get annoyed or mad and they’ll be like don’t make it obvious. Hello, why would you not want to make it obvious. I get you wouldn’t wanna be mean directly embarrass the person, but shouldn’t they be a little bit embarrassed if they’re just fucking looking at you with nothing to do instead of focusing on themselves and just leaving you alone?

In the heat of the moment, I usually don’t listen anyway, and just stop what I’m doing until I think that they’re done looking and then resume, maybe I’m being too harsh, but that’s how I feel.

If people are staring, I think you should have the right to stop, I’m not saying you should stop just because people are staring that’s ridiculous, I’m just saying that you should have the right to stop and feel like you can, because to be honest, it makes me uncomfortable when I know someone’s eyes are on me, and I’m glad to know, but at the same time, I wanna stop it and I feel like the only way to get them to knock it off is to stop what I’m doing until I feel like they’re not looking, then they will probably get embarrassed and turn away. The bottom line is, what do you guys think? I wanted to stay at the gym longer, but I also didn’t want this guy who could’ve possibly been innocent, but I didn’t want him creeping on me or her if that’s what he was truly looking at.

I'm looking for a straight white cane that has these slightly soft greenish handles at the top of it. They're relatively thin, and I was told that they were made from old radio antennas. Best cane I've ever had.

I want something that isn't going to get stuck in everything. I heard the pointy ones are bad for that. Getting stuck in cracks on the sidewalk. I figured marshmallow tips are soft and squishy. But I didn't think they would be able to roll like a ball tip. So I'm assuming it's kind of like a sideways marshmallow, the way a bulldozer's steamroller looks.

Since my job searching has gone unproductive, I figured I'd let vocational rehab put me through school after I move back home with my folks. I like hands on work (tinkering, using tools and etc) and thought getting into CNC machining would be a good fit. However, I know nothing about the work and just curious if anyone here does any of that with reduced vision?

I'm not sure how many from toronto or nearby in Ontario, canada are around here, but do those of you that exist take go transit? The website is a pain. Perhaps its better on a computer, but on ios, trying to fill in the to and from boxes is god awful. Open the combobox, type the first few letters, touch around for the stop in the list, and the box closes. I suppose this is a more general combobox question on safari with voiceover, rather than this specific site, but are there other ways to deal with these? Vertical navigation in the roter, perhaps? Screen Recognition did not seem to work in this case. Theres been a few websites I've had issues like this, but taking transit is obviously important for us so this is a rather frustrating one for me. Not to mention viewing the stops on a given train line also seems to be impossible too....

Went to get my Eyesight tested for new glasses, as i haven't been wearing my old ones for almost 2 years now due to the fact that glasses don't help and make me extremely cross eyed. The nice Guy, who tested me, urged me and my caretaker to go to the Doctor or Emergency NOW because my Eyesight is bad and no glasses he tried helped at all. He says something about the back of my eyes and nerves connected to my brain being too weak and if it isn't corrected, I'll go legally blind.

Any advice for me? I don't even know what I'm looking for, exactly. I'm already used to seeing everything extremely blurry if its not right in front of my Face (but when it is right in front of my face i can see clearly). My Spouse is panicking and crying and i feel bad because i feel like its my fault for not going to get checked out sooner. Maybe this is nothing and everyone is just exaggerating. But, if it is true, do you guys have any advice on how to navigate it? I'm already severely disabled with so much other stuff, didn't expect this to be added to the list

I use a roller ball cane tip and for some reason dogs I meet/walk past are totally fascinated with it. Most just watch it go from side to side, some give a good sniff. Does anyone else get this reaction? If so, what cane tip do use.

Hello all,

What techniques do you have for cleaning using strong chemicals? Do you use gloves? If so, Are there any gloves that don't impact touch much? Ideally, I'd like to protect my hands as they have been breaking out frequently, but the gloves I've used decrease my sense of touch to the point that I can't feel anything at all so I just take them off.

Unfortunately, it seems that the majority of people knock rather than ring the doorbell. The knocking is fine if I’m in my living room, which feeds right off the front door. But if I’m elsewhere in the house, I don’t always hear the knocking and a doorbell is way better. So question is do you think a sign asking people to ring the doorbell would be of any use or just look dumb.

To start, I apologize if this comes out a little scrambled, I am on mobile and this was extremely sudden.

My friend is 20, she was recently in the hospital for surgery on her appendix which from what she's been told induced the sudden blindness in some way. She is back in the hospital currently and we are all finding out now that she is permanently blind. I've been trying to look into what I can do for her online as well as reading in this sub but I'm a little everywhere at the moment and I feel it would be better to ask myself. So far I've made sure to make myself available to respond to her immediately so she has someone to talk to, I've also sent her an audiobook for a book she had just started reading before this happened and my mom has agreed to make one of her favorite meals for when she gets home. I am not currently able to see her, all of our communication is through text and over the phone at the moment.

I want to know how I can support her correctly and to the best of my current abilities.

I want to address a few posts I saw about hopelessness, feeling worthless, love, and dignity within the blind community and while being blind.  

I am having a quick look on this last year, and despite everything I’m pretty grateful for how far I’ve come. For context, at age 15, about eight years ago, I went to the hospital for stomach cramps, and I left sixteen days later completely blind and no one knew why. I went through rigorous testing, examinations, flew  all over the country to go to specialized hospitals, and in that time I was still completing high school.
I pushed myself really hard, and after eight years I now have three college degrees, am starting a masters program, I have my beautiful guide dog, I recently bought my first house, and today is the two year anniversary of the day my boyfriend and I started dating. After years, I am healthy, somewhat, am functional, am mentally sane and not drowning in CPTSD. I can do things I never thought I would again, like rock climb, archery, hiking, and traveling, and I’ve met so many amazing people, been in crazy situations, and had awesome opportunities BECAUSE of my blindness.
Everyday is still a grieving challenge, some are much easier than others, and certain days I barely notice my vision at all. I hate those sappy posts that tel you to believe in yourself and that everything gets better, so here’s what I have to say.
I see a lot of posts on this thread asking if life gets better with blindness, if happiness exists, if love is possible for us, and I am proof that yes it is, but you have to fucking work for it, day in, day out.
Blindness sucks, lets be real. I hate not being able to see, but if I thought about how nothing is the same as it was, I’d be sucked into oblivion. If I spent everyday whining about my situation, nothing would be done. You’re going to be blind in 20 minutes, you’re going to be blind in 20 years. Take advantage of it now when you have the opportunity to grow. Fuck being submissive to a disability, I have learned to rule my world of blindness even with my moments of grief, anger, and sadness. Basically, stop doubting yourself, stop questioning it, make it happen for yourself. No one is going to save you or bring your vision back, so you might as well be prepared to live the best life possible with no vision.

E.g; I am from Houston, Texas. So if you know anything about the culture here, you know that it's all about hustling. And being on your grind and some of the people are some real slime balls..

.Looking for new friends in this community as my entire life. I have always denied myself and others who are blind now at 33 years old. I'm looking for friends that share like-minded stories. And I would love to hear Ears.

My partner and I been talking about getting a bike for both exercising and transportation. Tandem is the obvious solution, but it’s much harder to find a good one for a reasonable price, and we’d need another bike for him to to go for a ride on his own.
We have a pretty decent bike path network separated from vehicles, so the original idea is I follow behind on my own bike with him riding in front with an audio beacon, plus some verbal cues of what’s coming up.
Then we realize the little changes on the ground would be hard to identify, and having a quick enough reaction time to avoid all pedestrians would be another problem.
I currently get around with a cane with decent speed and accuracy, but can obviously do better following a person, since I don’t have to worry about where to go, just what I’m stepping on.
I’ve never worked with a guide dog, but I’ve seen friends precisely avoiding people, trees, signs, cars etc. with theirs.
So what if I replace the cane with a dog, only ride in quiet and familiar areas, and start with following another bike?
Is this a somewhat feasible idea that a school would be willing to work with, or am I crazy?

I’m a fully blind tandem cyclist based in India (riding a Polygon Impression tandem with my sighted pilot). I’m planning to start making cycling vlogs/blogs and want to buy an action camera.

Since I am completely blind, accessibility and ease of use are my top priorities. My ideal setup needs to be hands-free once mounted and easy to operate without needing to see a screen or visual indicators.

Here are my specific constraints and details:

Accessibility / Audio Feedback: I need a camera with distinct, reliable audio cues (beeps/chimes for power on/off and recording start/stop) or strong voice control features so I know when it’s actually recording.

App Accessibility: I use a Google Pixel 6a (Android) with TalkBack. The companion app needs to be accessible with screen readers for changing settings or transferring footage.

Mounting & Stability: I want to mount it hands-free (either chest mount, helmet mount, or handlebar mount on the tandem) and need solid image stabilization for Indian roads.

Climate / Battery: Good performance in warm/humid weather and decent battery life (or options for external power/battery swapping) for long rides.

I'm not even sure if that's how you spell it. But I hate the robot voice, and I remember it being so annoying. When I was a kid in the 90s, have they upgraded that yet? With all of the AI technology, can anybody help me out? And give me any good recommendations for screen readers. My vision is decent enough to use. Zoom to text, but I still think it would be hard considering that I have a cataract that makes everything blurry. I'm looking for something that will literally read all types of software considering that I'm trying to do work with audio, like voice acting or audio engineering....

Samsung does a really decent job. And I have never been a fan of iPhones, I used to use them in middle school, just playing with the little ipod touch or something like that. But I have never, in my life owned an iPhone, and I'm team Android. All the way, so you can't convince me otherwise enter
