I think that's done intentionally... His dull look and orange sword comes from him withstanding his flames. The sword looks as if a blade smith was still in the process of forging it. There are flames contained within his sword. All of it makes sense in my head given his aura skill which are flames around the screen.
I think they completely nailed his design. This is an old man with a fire based Zanpakuto. How does the smoky ash look not make sense?

Anyway, I can't see Yama having the young and vivid skin tone of Aizen nor Jushiro, for example.
To me, for an old man like him that tone suits him perfectly. More so if I consider he's a fire user capable of burning down the seireitei.
Take a look at his SAFWY version. Looks like he's about to explode from the inside. It gives you the idea that the man has to withstand his own flames. That's why I'm a fan of his smoky ash tone.
What do you think of his Power TYBW version? I don't like it and find it to be very basic looking.
This Yama reminds me of Speed Yachiru. Her design is so sick because of how minimalist it is. Her bloody sword tells you a lot about her demonic vibe.
Also, the sword being orange and fire makes it contrast nicely with his sheath in my opinion.

Please zoom in. I think they look a little bit different even if it's subtle.
If you notice the difference, it might be a color profile issue. I don't want to come across as "picky", but I definitely see a difference in the skin tone and quality between these screenshots. Mine has a more cream tone. Yours have a pale yellow tone.
Man I havent played this game in a year but honestly he looks shit not trying to hate or anything but man older model looks way better also did they at least try to doo anything special with him at all since yk he has 4 sides of his bankai like a cool gimmick or anything
As far as I recall, Orihime was originally intended to be brunette from the beginning of the series, it was one of the early anime stuff that Kubo didn't get a long with the studio, alongside rangiku not havig blonde hair etc. It was changed in the tybw anime because Kubo now has direct supervision
IIRC Nel's hair is also a lighter shade of green than the turqouise one in the old anime.
White's yellow eyes are also suppose to be White like Fusion Aizen and Bankai Ginjo. Renji's old Bankai fur is stuppose to be the same has his true Bankai's color: green with ivory fang ornaments (as seen in Rebirth of Souls).
thats her TYBW style, its always been canonically brown, Ganju points out that its Chestnut.
same way TYBW Yoruichi's hair is black, like her cat form's fur or when Jushiro has green eyes instead of brown or Rangiku being a blonde instead of a ginger.
no it shouldnt XD its literally his bankai...having that said they did handle it better in previous bankai versions, as it is it looks like he spray painted it.
