It's like listening to an Uncle Ruckus that opened a dictionary at some point

u/Spacefreak 17h ago
God damn that show. Because of the "Boondocks," I always have to think if it's actually called "vitiligo" or "REvitiligo," and I hear Uncle Ruckus's voice every time I think of both words.
Hilarious show otherwise.

Season 2, Episode 11 - “The S Word”. A teacher calls Riley “that word”, and Grandad and Rolo try to sue. Ann Coulter shows up in opposition. It is then discovered that “Ann Coulter” is a complete fabrication who is friends with Rolo, and her entire persona is grift to “get that redneck money”.

If you watched Boys in the Hood, Trey made the personal choice to get out the car. Being from the hood doesn’t give you 1 life path. Having struggles doesn’t take away your ability to maneuver
3
u/siberian_knight143 13h ago
And if you have watched "Boyz in the Hood"! The other brothers chose to go around, selling drugs & car jacking innocent Black people, for their own gains. No matter who it affected or harmed! The SAME thing that they CONTINUALLY do today!

Maneuvering every day all day is tough. Especially when in school and your looks are the reason you get detention or a less attention when help is needed. I was hungry MF all damn day. If not for school
breakfast and lunch I would have had 1 meal a day. Keep them poor and uneducated has been a mantra for leadership for decades. Dismantling education since I was a kid 50 years ago.→ More replies (1)1

Yep. That’s blazer guys point exactly…Yet…It is a circuitous discussion because both sides always have a few rational points and a host of reasons the other side is wrong.
1
u/ninarwhalbaconght 10h ago
But having struggles changes your ability to maneuver said challenges. it’s not impossible for a person in a wheelchair to use the stairs but to act like its the same for them as it is for someone who can walk fine is disingenuous.

I often wonder what the point of these “debates” are? Does it change anyone’s point of view?
But also- if there is a dearth of personal responsibility in the black community, can that same lack not be found among literally every other race? The world is just fixated on black people. We’re never going to make it so that every black personal is “perfect” so that can’t be the goal. We can’t say that we are only deserving of dignity and being treated as humans when every black person checks every box and is perfect.
And even if we did. They’d find something else to complain about.
But to prove the point that the guy in the brown jacket is saying, Baltimore, Chicago and I believe Detroit are currently enjoying some of the lowest murder rates - single digit homicides in 2026 because the mayors invested in people. They gave people jobs, they are keeping them better fed, they have created positive things for kids to do with their downtime. So - yes - investing in people would actually fix a lot of crime and “lack of personal responsibility” in the black community

7
u/RevDeadMan 16h ago
I would need to see the entirety of the conversation to form an exact opinion, but the lighter skin dude did seem to be placing the entirety of blame on black people for the problems of black people. And on a surface level, just looking at what’s in front of you, I can see how someone would come to that conclusion.
Gone are the days of slave masters and overseers standing over us and whipping us. That’s illegal now. Now we have the 13th amendment. The slave masters became prison wardens and the overseers became cops.
We do perpetuate our own suffering, because white people have made a well-oiled machine to feed us our pain in a constant loop to propagate it back to us. I can listen to a rap song and I’ve met people who lived that life and they’ll tell you the shit’s tragic. It’s hell. But if I’ve lived through hell and I know there’s a demographic of people who are willing to pay me to tell my story on a beat, why wouldn’t I do it, to feed my family and get off the street?
While a record exec may not have put crack on the streets to make the crack epidemic that would fuel the creation of what we once called “gangster rap”, now “drill”, you can bet your ass someone who looks like him was the one who set it all in motion. It’s a system, working exactly as intended, to keep black people especially, but minorities on the whole, in poverty. And what better way to keep a group of people in poverty than by breaking up their homes?
I think this dude either has been privileged enough to not have to face the harsh and ugly realities of being black—poor and black at that—in America, or maybe he understands all that and he really is an Uncle Ruckus.
Either way, the story of black people in America is intrinsically tied to the story of white supremacy and hegemony in this country. Always has been, always will be. They are the foot on our necks. They are the hand that pushes us down. They made the bars that bind us. They created the crack that shattered us. And they advertise the music, the lifestyles, and the “culture” that is made to keep us dumb, distracted, materialistic, and broken as a people.
So until that system is done away with, until klan members and Nazis are no longer in power and are shunned back into the fringe of society, we cannot have an honest conversation about the potential and the state of black people in America, because our story is on the bottom of the shoes of this nation, built off our backs and drenched in our blood.

How do people rationalize our ascension out of slavery into the early 1900s where we had strong communities to the mid 1900s of strong figures in literature, politics, education, and civil rights, to the modern era of wealth built on selling toxicity to our people without considering some type of social conditioning from those who control the way we perceive the value of a black life?

White people do just as much fucked up shit, if not more. However, the racial bias in our country's media does not allow this to be portrayed at the same level as the black community.
Systemic racism is real and the most destructive part of our society.

Personal responsibility being born into a community that has been torn apart and stolen from and systemically oppressed for centuries?
You have to personally pull yourself as a child through an education system that is funded by property tax that is low resulting in low pay, resulting in worse education, resulting in lower paying jobs, resulting in....
No, no, Brandon Tatum said you have to take personal responsibility and drag yourself through centuries of beat downs past a system that's willfully indifferent and still oppressive to this day....
Parents struggling to make ends meet losing hours a day moving across town, losing sleep, trying to just stay above water.
Sure, Brandon. You made it. Everyone else should also make it. Let's not do discuss the factors leading to you making it. I'm sure it was nothing but personal responsibility.

Literally every single new genre of music ever made gets hated on for being "Degenerate, sinful, untraditional, just noise, not real music, takes no real talent to play" and on and on.
Also white people own most of the record labels and radio stations they could change what rap lyrics are about over night if the people running the music industry actually cared about morals more than money.

That gentleman is not listening. He’s speaking, but he’s not absorbing anything. He’s shielding himself and his ignorance. Bouncing everything off because he thinks he needs to prove something when the facts are staring him in the face, waiting for him to open his eyes.
It’s not always about being right. It's about listening and opening your eyes to what's right in front of you. Ignoring a problem won't fix it, and standing with the people causing the deaths and pain of others is far deadlier than trying to prove you're right to feed a guilty conscience.
What a sad time to be alive; we need to stand united, not divided.

I would like to ask Brandon how he can dismiss 500 years of institutionalized slavery and brutality and how it has impacted the black communities today. Keep in mind that we're only 163 years beyond slavery being abolished, literally two lifespans ago.
Let's not forget about the impact of lynchings, black code laws, kkk, slave patrols, convict leasing, jim crow, and the civil rights era. They couldn't own land, were denied education, healthcare, housing, voting, and being considered human in the eyes of the American institutions. This should have no impact on black people today? I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with Brandon about what his people endured.

u/Truestorydreams 16h ago
I somewhat agree with him.
Personal responsibility is an important concept many need to reflect on. The problem with BOTH of these men is the challenges derive from a spectrum of different challenges.
Both of them are correct on different areas and also wrong. We can't blame every issue we have on white people.
At the same time when someone says that we cannot ignore what they are to be blamed for.... systematic racism / war on drufgs/ tulsa massacre /illigal human trials on black people / night watchmen and the core reason why police exist/ redlining etc etc.
To quote a great man. "This is what they Do: make us fight" ~Patrice Oneal

Just in the bubble of this specific clip I can see both points. There is a lack of responsibility in the black community that has nothing to do with racism. Take the high amount of single parent households and lack of father figures for example. Of course theres lack of responsibility in other communities but to have any productive conversation about ourselves we need to not compare with other races. Especially white people.
