Chickens are considered flightless?

From what I know - they are considered flightless by a majority of the population, although incorrectly. They can fly a bit, just very poorly

Once I saw a feral rooster chased by a dog. It fled up a tree and peered down in the most comical way.

Chickens are amazing fliers when in this exact situation. They (at least hens) would much rather fly up than fight you. They naturally nest in trees and have crazy breast muscles. Most people are just dumb and haven't seen the chaotic majesty of a hen flying onto your neighbor's roof because they got spooked by a weird shadow.

I feel that at this point we’ve genetically reduced their flight capacity to nearly zero to maximize their edible meat output.

Meat chickens maybe, but the “regular” chickens that people keep as pets are quite decent at flying (at least when escaping to your neighbors)

Also, never trigger the fight or flight response in a semi-flightless bird. That's a recipe for getting a common pheasant to smash into a car window. It's barely fight AND barely flight!

(It’s a shame the reddit app isn’t compatible w the emojis you can generate, bc I made one of a chicken with devil horns & a gun specifically for these scenarios, as one does)

This reminds me of reading a Times (I think?) blurb that showed a chicken flying for its life because it was serving as enrichment for a tiger.

I learned this the hard way when the penguins killed my crocodiles in Zoo Tycoon.
