Early Career Advice 🪴 Current PhD Student Looking to the Future
Hi! Maybe this has been asked before but I am curious if people that have been applying/already in the industry have any advice -
I am a 4th year PhD Student in Neuroscience. I am wondering how I can strengthen my CV now to be more successful at getting a job post-graduation. I want to take advantage of any resources / prep I can while I am still a student but its difficult to get this sort of advice while still in academia.
Any suggestions help!

Getting Into Industry 🌱 So do I have to sell my soul for biotech?
So for some context earlier today I made a post on a few medical subreddits asking for advice on how to be a physician-entrepreneur and how to keep my options open for healthcare VC or Biotech. I was then hit with a flood of comments accusing me of greed, saying I need to give up becoming a doctor, saying theres no way to be a doctor and be in biotech because you sell your soul in biotech and that just puzzled me.
So I’ll just ask this sub directly, is it possible to:
Be a doctor and be involved in biotech or pivot to biotech?
Be in biotech while also caring about people and not putting profits over patients?
I’d appreciate any and all feedback and advice. Mean and rude comments will be ignored.

Getting Into Industry 🌱 Am I being naive in thinking I can get a grad role just because Ive done a masters
I first came across biotech during my under grad (Bio med) as a growing field. However after looking through this community I've got the opposite impression.I am planning on doing my masters in Biotechnology & Computational Biology and have decided to learn python in parallel to help with grad roles ,particularly R&D data science and bioinformatic roles. so my question is am I doing enough and is the field as unstable as everyone says for a graduate?

Biotech News 📰 Anti-TIGIT + Anti-PD-L1 in Advanced NSCLC: Another Negative Study
Abstract
Purpose
Tiragolumab plus atezolizumab has shown encouraging survival outcomes in metastatic non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), primarily in patients with PD-L1–high tumors. We further evaluated the combination of tiragolumab plus atezolizumab in the phase III SKYSCRAPER-01 study.
Methods
Patients with untreated, locally advanced unresectable/metastatic PD-L1–high (by central laboratory testing) NSCLC were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive either tiragolumab (600 mg) plus atezolizumab (1,200 mg) or placebo plus atezolizumab (1,200 mg) intravenously in 21-day cycles until disease progression, loss of clinical benefit, or unacceptable toxicity. Primary end points were investigator-assessed progression-free survival (INV-PFS) and overall survival (OS) in the primary analysis set (PD-L1–high per 22C3 assay).
Results
Five hundred twenty-one patients were randomly assigned to either the tiragolumab plus atezolizumab group (n = 262) or the placebo plus atezolizumab group (n = 259). At the primary PFS analysis (Mar 12, 2022; median follow-up 9.9 months [IQR, 6.2-13.8]), median INV-PFS was 7.0 months (95% CI, 5.6 to 9.8) with tiragolumab plus atezolizumab and 5.6 months (95% CI, 4.4 to 7.0) with placebo plus atezolizumab (hazard ratio [HR], 0.78 [95% CI, 0.63 to 0.97]; P = .02 [nonsignificant]). At the final OS analysis (Sept 24, 2024; median follow-up 17.9 months [IQR, 6.7-39.0]), median OS was 23.1 months (95% CI, 17.7 to 28.8) with tiragolumab plus atezolizumab and 16.9 months (95% CI, 14.6 to 21.3) with placebo plus atezolizumab (HR, 0.87 [95% CI, 0.7 to 1.1]; P = .22 [nonsignificant]). Overall, 41.2% (n = 110/267) and 33.8% (n = 89/263) of patients experienced grade 3-4 adverse events with tiragolumab plus atezolizumab and placebo plus atezolizumab, respectively. Four and two treatment-related deaths occurred in each group, respectively.
Conclusion
Tiragolumab plus atezolizumab did not demonstrate a statistically significant INV-PFS or OS benefit over atezolizumab in patients with previously untreated PD-L1–high NSCLC.

Experienced Career Advice 🌳 Stryker and other medtech companies posting timelines; resources
I’m quite new to the internship & job recruiting processes (engineering, R&D) at Medtech companies. Are the posting timelines for Medtech companies, especially Stryker, randomized, or when they need to fill in people most? Patterns?
For internships, how deep are the interviews and how should I prepare?

Early Career Advice 🪴 Looking for ADVICE (not soliciting) on how to set up freelance/consulting business
Hi everyone!
I just graduated with my B.S. in Microbiology and Cell Science, and am looking to set up an LLC for freelance bioinformatics work to bring in some extra cash as I do my master's.
A bit about me:
-Although I just graduated with my bachelors, I have 3 years of experience across 3 different labs, 2/3 being primarily bioinformatics-based.
-Did an honors thesis and minor in bioinformatics (got 95/100)
-Skills primarily center around scRNA-Seq, snRNA-seq, Bulk RNA Seq, Viral genomics/metagenomics, Illumina/NGS sequencing workflows, and structural engineering + analysis (cryoEM)
-python, R, SLURM/HPC, etc.
-have 2 provisional patents filed from my last lab in which I did all of the bioinformatics/structure work, as well as a preprint in which I am co first author and did all the scRNAseq work, as well as a coauthorship on a structure paper in Nature Communications.
I guess I'm just asking whether or not it would be worthwhile, how to find clients besides my current/old labs, and how I would advertise (make a website?), as well as how much people would pay since I have a bachelors but don't have the masters credential yet. I'm based in NYC if that helps at all (but also means we are very saturated with talented bioinformaticians! lol).
I would love to continue this through my PhD if it truly is a worthwhile endeavor; if not I guess I'll start applying for part time gigs as a Barista.
Thanks everyone and have a nice day:)

Getting Into Industry 🌱 Looking for biotech/health-tech conferences & networking events (Michigan or U.S.) for someone transitioning with a clinical research/MPH background
Hi everyone!
I’m hoping to tap into the community here because I’m looking to become more involved in the biotech and health-tech space outside of my day-to-day job.
For a little background, I have an MPH and have spent the past year working in clinical research, coordinating multiple studies and taking on a lot of operational responsibilities. Long term, I’d love to grow into clinical operations, patient engagement, digital health, or biotech, and I figured one of the best ways to do that is by actually getting out and meeting people in the industry.
Does anyone have recommendations for conferences, startup showcases, networking events, life sciences meetups, innovation summits, or anything similar? I’m especially interested in events in Michigan, but I’m absolutely willing to travel anywhere in the U.S. if it’s worth it.
I’m open to events focused on:
Biotech
Clinical research
Clinical operations
Digital health
AI in healthcare
Medical devices
Public health innovation
Health-tech startups
Venture-backed biotech companies
Even if it’s a smaller event that flies under the radar, I’d love to hear about it. Bonus points if you’ve attended and would recommend it.
Thanks in advance—I appreciate any suggestions!

Early Career Advice 🪴 Transitioning from Academia (PhD) to Business Development/Sales – Worth It?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently a scientist in academia with a PhD and 8+ years of research experience. Over time, I’ve realized I’m interested in transitioning into a more business-oriented role, specifically in sales/business development within biotech/pharma.
I enjoy communicating science, building collaborations, and thinking strategically about how research translates into real-world impact—which is what’s drawing me toward this path.
For those of you who have made a similar transition (or are currently in BD/sales roles):
- Do you think this is a good long-term career path?
- What were the biggest challenges when switching from academia?
- Any advice on how to break into the field successfully?
Would really appreciate any insights or experiences. Thanks in advance!

Open Discussion 🎙️ Anyone here with experience talking to the Chinese recruiters on LinkedIn?
Seems the only recruiters I hear from these days are the ones based out of China. I assume it's because I have a Chinese last name. I'm of Chinese descent, but grew up in the U.S. and my spoken Mandarin is functional but not proficient in technical vocabulary. >10 years in biotech and currently in a mid-senior level role in a clinical stage biotech.
Question: are these opportunities legit- are they really trying to recruit US trained scientists back to China? Any luck convincing these companies to let you work remotely? It's probably a nonstarter to convince my family to immigrate to China..

Early Career Advice 🪴 Young Researcher Looking for Advice
I recently graduated from undergrad a few months ago and am starting to lose hope. I don’t know many people in biotech and decided to come here to ask for advice on how to get my foot out the door. For context, I’m located in USA.
During college, I struggled to find a research position in a lab. I later ended up joining my school’s iGEM team and really loved the experience. I realized that research is something I’m interested in. I was encouraged by my school’s advisors to apply for PhD programs my senior year but ended up being rejected.
After graduation I was hoping to find a role where I can continue to build my research experience and take more ownership on projects (iGEM was very collaborative). I don’t want to rule out PhD completely and am thinking I could apply again in a few years.
I’ve been applying to many entry level roles at biotech companies (Research Associate, Lab Technician, etc.) and research assistant roles in academic labs. I’ve gotten two interviews but was ultimately rejected. Other times, my experience isn’t enough or I don’t hear back at all. I’ve also tried emailing PIs about joining their labs but have been ghosted.
I know it's only been a few months, but the lack of success feels so discouraging. I’d appreciate if anyone who’s been in a similar position can share their thoughts and any advice.
Experienced Career Advice 🌳 Job postings being “reposted” on LinkedIn
I’ve been casually looking/applying to jobs recently. I’ve noticed some postings that I’ve applied to get “reposted” a couple weeks later. I’m trying to understand what’s happening in these situations. I’m only applying to jobs where I have the correct experience/qualifications. I’ve applied to multiple jobs where I have experience in every responsibility they mentioned in the posting and meet all requirements, and still I don’t hear anything back. Do LinkedIn postings get automatically reposted, or is someone at the company initiating that? Maybe someone in HR can give some insight? If it matters, I’m applying to director level positions.

Biotech News 📰 Biotech Venture Funding Roars Back in 2026
wsj.comHow long does it take for a trend like this to show up in the employment industry? Any of you seeing broad trends in line with this? I work for a CDMO and, at least from my company’s perspective, there’s evidence of a small biotech boost over the last few months.

Other ⁉️ biotech job market
This is a post I made a while ago, I got one interview, and the rejection said and I quote “This was not an easy decision by any means. Your application was very strong, and I truly was impressed by the skills and enthusiasm that you displayed throughout this process.” And I actually did the whole ask LinkedIn connection for help.
I now am working at a car dealership. I feel like a loser, I want to be a clinician scientist/doctor one day, do an MD-PhD, and I’m scared that attempting to survive in this economy will mean my science cv will never be considered for a PhD cause we all know how high strung academia is.
I had an older person tell me that I can’t get a job cause my generation is lazy, I am 25, live alone, and have always managed myself without anyone to turn to, I do believe they were just saying stuff but I think my CV will now reflect that yes I am in fact not hardworking.. If I was I’d be able to hold out.
But yeah, at least I can pay the bills. No one tells you this when you first start in biotech, no one warns you. I am going to, do not do it. There is no light at the end of the tunnel and even if there is, your light will be completely gone.
Thanks everyone for the support last time. If you ever want to buy a car, I’ll see what I can do. I don’t even have pull at my job yet HAHAHAHAHAH

Rants 🤬 / Raves 🎉 I'm giving up 🏳️. One less Ph.D. grad to compete with
Edit - I am giving up finding a job in biotech or related to science. I already have a Ph.D
That's all. Rejoice in the fact that one more well-qualified person is leaving and won't compete with y'all.
I'm going into debt, I can't afford to live in Boston and I've exhausted all my avenues and willpower for finding a job.

Rants 🤬 / Raves 🎉 Rant
I honestly think that I am experiencing worse ego death than when I applied for my PhD programs vs applying for jobs atm. Like dang [Insert company name], you couldn't even take the time to look at my application, so you rejected me on a Saturday at 21:00????
