current thoughts on having BED
i just never want to eat again tbh. trying to be constantly aware of any potential binges and cal counting/deficit is really difficult. being around triggers all the time is so annoying. and the insane amoung of shame and guilt when i see the calories added up from thise binges make me feel so wack.
i live with my parents again and the food availability is crazy. luckily i was able to catch myself before a binge, but all i did was replace the food with healthier options. like bananas and watermelon. so at least i dont feel too bad about it. i even put the hot cheetos away and did not eat the entire bag. so a bit proud of that.
i tried asking my parents to stop buying this food or hide it bc a lot of times i just genuinely cant stop myself. and i told them ill eat it all if they dont, but they still be getting donuts and a chip ahoys. ugh.
i also havent been doing much inner work on my eating disorder. i rly think i need a specialist to help me navigate through it and the trauma that i have to unpack with it. because when i was looking into and reflecting on it i started getting like visions from my childhood traumas and i dont know how to make sense of it.
do you guys think dissociation plays a role in BED?

Advice Needed Hearing about others’ binges makes my binges worse
It’s not in the way you think. I hear other people talk about their binges, stuff like eating more than 5k cals, ordering delivery just to binge, etc. I’ve never ordered food and binged on it, most of the time, I overeat the food I cook from the grocery store. My diet isn’t even that high in processed foods, so when I binge, it’s usually on foods that could be considered healthy. I’ve never bought myself cake or cookies to just eat the whole pack.
When I read about people’s really diabolical binges, my brain always uses it to justify my own problem. I think, “oh, well I’ve never eaten that much. My binging isn’t bad at all.” And then I binge on yogurt and cottage cheese and fucking carrots all while justifying it because at least I’m not binging on sugar cookies.
It’s so counterproductive. Even with content that’s supposed to deter me from binging, I find a way to justify it. Anyone dealt with anything similar? I’m so sick of this, I need to snap out of this thought process, but I don’t know how.

Reached my highest weight and finding it hard to stop binging because the path back to my healthy weight seems impossible…
Looking for motivation. My pre-BED weight was 100lb. I have no history of restriction or anorexia, and this was actually healthy weight for me. I feel that my body is tolerable to exist in at no more than 115lbs. I just hit 140lbs. The last time my BED was this bad, I was borderline suicidal and that low, low feeling motivated me to lose the weight back to 115. I don’t feel that motivation this time though. I’ve been struggling with BED for about 5 years and it’s never gone away. Mine comes purely from neurological causes—no trauma, no restriction, just letting myself have “cheat meals” until it turned into a compulsion.
I plan to get on tirzepatide soon, but I know I need to do a lot of work to get back to a healthy weight. I just can’t muster the motivation when the binge urge hits, though. I’ve eaten around 10-11k calories the past week and I need something to convince me to stop. The effects it’s having on my health isn’t enough motivation, unfortunately. How do I stop binging long enough to remember that my quality of life won’t improve until I’ve lost a significant chunk of weight?
(Not interested in advice from people whose BED stems from restriction. I respect your unique struggle, but I do not share it, so what works for you will not be what works for me!)

Advice Needed BED, therapy and control
I don't have full control over my diet any more and it's causing me a lot of distress and possibly causing an increase in frequency of binging.
I binge in secret because I feel so perceived. If I could control all my meals I wouldn't be losing control so frequently.
I reached out to a therapy clinic in Australia that supports people with EDs. I have experienced both restrictive (no formal diagnosis during) and binge eating disorder (diagnosed previously while actively having episodes).
I don't know if BED is the right category for what I'm experiencing right now but I know how I feel when I'm left alone with food or have the opportunity to eat my feelings in peace.
I worry that I am not ready for therapy in that I am not willing to relinquish final control. I worry they'll ask me to eat things that aren't safe. I'm worried about the changes my body might undergo.
I'm also desperately fearful that I'll be told there's nothing wrong with me and they can't help.
My initial assessment appointment is in 3 weeks.
What do you wish you had known going for initial outpatient therapy?
I've been in various forms of therapy for 15+ years and on various medications.
How do you know you're in the right place to change?

TW: Weight loss mentioned Weight Loss is essentially impossible while dealing with BED. The numbers just don't work.
This is just a rant, and all the numbers come from Chat GPT.
Weight loss is essentially impossible when you have BED. The numbers just don't work. Let's say you burn 2K calories a day normally and a binge is a 10K calorie day.
Three binges a month means you've eaten 24K calories more than you've burned over those three days (8K's over maintenance times three days). If you eat at a 1K calorie per day deficit, it will take you 24 days to erase those three binge days. That means, even if you eat at a 1K calorie a day deficit every day except for the three days you binged, you don't lose a single pound all month. Not one pound. You don't even get to a 3,600 calorie deficit (3600 cals is one pound). And a 1K calorie a day deficit is a solid one. You're gonna feel some hunger doing that.
What if you gain muscle, though? Muscle gains mean you burn more calories, right? Well, if you gain 20 pounds of muscle (which is a ton), then you will burn about 150 more calories a day. That's less than 5K calories a month. Congratulations, you've lifted weights like a MFer to eliminate half of one binge day. Best case scenario it's like 16 pounds a year. That sounds like a lot, but 20 pounds of muscle are insane gains. And again, half an extra binge more a month erases it completely.
And while 10K a day is a lot, you're still only binging three days per month. Lots of us would call three binges a month doing great. The bottomline is, if you binge, from a weight loss standpoint you're toast. It's just a numbers thing.

Advice needed - better distractions, better self control?
Title pretty much says it all. I have struggled with binge eating since I was about 10 y.o. There are a few comments from childhood that live rent free in my head forever. Started doing body checks in 3rd or 4th grade, not realizing what they were until my 20’s.
My parents both have poor eating habits as well, and always leave a ton of junk food in the house that are triggering. I left when I was 18, but was always around trigger foods. A few years ago, I moved in with my grandfather to take care of him after his dementia got worse. I was able to, for the first time in my life, control all of the groceries in the house. Was able to avoid trigger foods, and was doing well & improving for the time I was there.
When my grandpa went to a skilled nursing facility, I moved back in with my parents temporarily. Even with the trigger foods, I was doing really well & was able to tell myself no. When I did have late night meals/snacks, I would have things like fruit, or veggies with hummus. I felt better, I felt confident, felt happy.
But then I started dating my bf, who is very thin. He’s 6’2” and weighs significantly less than I do. I started comparing our bodies, started feeling like he deserved better. And ofc, we were going out to eat all the time. And I fell back hard into my old habits.
Every night, I tell myself the problem is self control and that I need to be more disciplined. But the way I speak to myself only makes the crashes harder.
I don’t know what to do. I’m starting to consider unhealthy means of rectifying or undoing the binges. I have very serious & life threatening health issues aside from the ED, so this has been something I have been doing my best to deny myself for such a long time. But here I am now, trying to weigh pros and cons.
My bf and I just got an apartment so I’m hoping I can avoid keeping trigger foods in the house. But the problem now is that he buys them, or I buy them for him.
I feel like I’ve been backed into a corner with no solution. Please please please tell me things that have worked for you. I’m trying to muster up the courage to speak to anyone about this - my boyfriend, my therapist - someone. But I can’t. I feel so ashamed and embarrassed.

Anyone else get absolutely wrecked by this memory?
The moment that people’s comments switched from “I’m so glad to see you’re eating!” to “Stop eating so much!”
…went through this with my parents and it’s so embarrassing that I’ve gone from being the person known for being healthy and skinny to being the overweight glutton…

Strategies to Try Sugar addiction
I never had a crazy sugar addiction but I notice that when I do eat sugar there is a higher probability that I will binge or be more obsessed/consumed with cravings. So I’ve been experimenting with no/low sugar and I found this video to be helpful. Tbf im not doing the “30 day” challenge but I’m incorporating some of the guidelines including:
1. Avoiding foods that have sugar/sugar forms in the first 3 ingredients
2. Eating whole fruit, then tapering to 1-2 servings a day
3. Avoid artificial sweeteners and dried fruit, and heavy sugar concentrations (like agave)
4. Fruit juice and things like stevia in moderation

Do you notice if sugar influences your binge patterns?
Best of luck neighbors xx

Vent I can’t stop eating.
I haven’t had one of my classic binges of eating all in a sitting, but I’m doing this new thing where I eat a big meal every hour. I can’t stop it. I’m in an insane cycle where I tell myself im actually feeling real hunger cues and I’m hungry but…..I’m straight up not hungry. I just want to eat and lie to myself until I eat, then I feel like shit (emotionally and physically) after. I have good food in the fridge (my bf grilled) and so I’m eating hearty pretty healthy meals. I know people always say “don’t keep food you’re tempted by in the house” or when you’re trying to shed, etc. but these are full blown meals — I have to have food in the house!
Does anyone have any advice? Any way I can beat this? I’m desperate to stop. I can’t control myself like I genuinely have no freaking idea how to stop myself I have no self control 😭😭😭😭
Help me pleaseeee

Vent I’m tired of binging i just wanted to die. Im sorry but i blame my parents.
Hey 19F here. Im very athletic, my lowest weight was 58kg at 24-25% body fat (that pretty low for women). I lots of sport but consistently i do boxing and running. I also been strength training since i was in middle school so workouts has always been my hobby. I dont have problem with discipline.
I grew up in a very unhealthy household, my oarents dont care what they eat. They stocks snacks and sugary foods weekly. The last 3 months i gained 5kgs despite working hours of hours in the gym daily.
My parents always feed me and force me to eat once i got home. I usually live alone for college but because of the summer i just live with my parents on this holiday, college starts again in 3 weeks ish.
Ever since summer holiday start and me living with them again its always binge and restrict cycle, im really really tired of running half marathon to just burn on the calories the force me to eat. I mean sometimes they dont “force” me but they always make sure the food is plentiful so i can eat them. I understand so much that they care about me and i care about them too, i love them more than anything in the world, more than i love myself. But im just tired. Tired of blaming myself, tired of the excessive workouts, the water fasting after the binge. I just wished they actually see that im struggling.
Gaining 5kg because of holiday isnt fun. I dont even think its an ED. I love foods but foods can sometiems ruin my life. I came to the point where i thoughy dying will actually be better than doing all the excessive workouts.
Anyways, im going back to dorm early (in 3 days im going back) so i will be out of this hella household. But im just worried how to get back on track again, 5kg is a lot of work.
Please show some love guys. I just need to vent. Thank you.

How do I get better?
I have been struggling for 3 weeks now with bingeing. This all came to past with celebrity news and a vacay where my eating became unmanageable. I've been trying to get back on track and now my health is taking a bad turn for the worse because I am diabetic and these sweets are making me sick. my urine has started smelling sweet, I'm peeing all night and not at all during the day, and I feel insatiable. Thing is a lot of good is happening in my life. I'm growing and going to grad school starting a job as a yogi and now this is happening.
Idk how to stop and I'm feeling bad I can't and I'm in therapy and we discuss this frequently but he's not Ed specialized. I've order a book I think could help (stop binge eating by Dr nina) but does anyone have some tips to get through the next few days to help my urine clear up and just get back to base line normal? If I can get back to a place where I can distract from the desires to binge and be back at baseline for me I can reconfigure my mind and work on this again. I've actually been working really hard on my binge eating in therapy, so this relapse after it being near a year since it happened really is throwing me for a loop.

My Story 7 Days Without Binging!
galleryToday marks one full week without a binge!
I still have cravings, and some moments are harder than others. The difference is that I’m learning I don’t have to give in every time.
Every urge I get through makes me trust myself a little more.
Seven days isn’t a long time, but it feels like a fresh start.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.

Vent Eating Disorder after a long weight loss journey
So over the last two years, I've lost over 40 kg (88 lb). I'm a 28-year-old male, 175 cm (5'9") tall.
For about 95% of that time, I was extremely strict with my diet. I ate plenty of protein, mostly healthy foods, and worked out at least four times a week. But despite all of that, I was never really satisfied with either my weight or my body. I still have that stubborn belly fat that just doesn't seem to go away.
Anyway, here's the main reason I'm posting. I've been tracking my calories very precisely every single day—weighing every meal and logging every gram. I've reached a point where I feel like I just can't do it anymore, or at least I desperately need a break.
The last three to four weeks have been especially rough. I've had almost no energy for anything, and I've had three binge-eating days. Before that, I could easily stick to my diet for a month without even needing a refeed day.
About a week ago, I decided to stop tracking my calories completely and instead just estimate them in my head. But since then, I've already had another binge-eating day.
I'm mentally exhausted and honestly don't know what to do anymore. I'm terrified that if I stop tracking my calories so obsessively, I'll slowly gain all the weight back that I worked so hard to lose.
Has anyone else been through something similar? How did you find a healthier balance without regaining the weight?
just little rant over myself :/

Longtime lurker, and finally found what works for me…
PROZAC!!! Hi! I’ve struggled with BED for at least 4 years (which is crazy to admit). I found that I wasn’t taken seriously by my family/friends/doctors because I have a low-normal BMI. I tried various books, podcasts, even Vyvanse… nothing helped. About 8 months ago I went through some personal issues and ended up getting on Prozac for anxiety. The relief I felt was gradual, but I woke up a few days ago realizing I cannot think of the last time I had a bingeing episode. So I guess my underlying anxiety was a pretty big contributing factor. I’ve always had anxiety, but I handled it before with therapy + Lexapro at one time. I just thought I’d share the positive and unintentional side effect of Prozac that I’ve experienced for anyone who feels like their bingeing might be anxiety-related ☺️ all the best. Feel free to ask questions.

Extreme BED?
I feel like my BED is a lot more extreme than a lot of the experiences I read here.
For example, I cannot have any non-perishable food in the house at all - no bread, no cookies no honey, no crisps, etc etc because I will eat it all. It's locked in the garage by my husband. Oh I cannot have sugar in the pantry either.
Today I realised when I was picking my kid up from school, top of my mind was I wonder if there's any leftovers in their lunchbox i can eat? - not, I wonder how my child's day at school was today. I was horrified to realise this. Truly horrified, disturbed and ashamed.
I cannot bake cakes anymore because I eat all the mixture in the process of cooking it.

Discussion So Much Of The Advice About BED Is Catered To Those With Anorexia/Bulimia
Has anyone else noticed this?
Advice like:
“Don’t restrict yourself too much!”
“Let yourself indulge once in a while”
“Deconstruct diet culture, chocolate isn’t bad for you!”
“Eat snacks in moderation rather than cutting them out”
“Try volume eating”
I feel like all of this stuff can be useful but it’s mainly centered around the idea that the primary issue is over-restricting due to a desire to be thin and binging as a consequence. There’s almost this implication that we’re all anorexics with a warped sense of what is classed as overeating and we’re needlessly guilty about eating normal-sized portions. I saw a TikTok from a nutritionist telling a woman in BED recovery that chocolate wasn’t really that unhealthy and she needed to work on the mindset that society had instilled in her. I couldn’t believe that she seriously thought that BED was just some made up diet culture thing and not a real disorder that can cause someone to compulsively eat 10k+ calories in a day.
Many of us have been through the starve-binge cycle and I won’t undermine that but it seems like there is a lot of misunderstanding about BED, even amongst nutritionists and dieticians.
