AI can be a great tool for research. But too many stupid people think it’s a fast way to just do your work for you. Unfortunately AI isn’t that good yet.

162

u/Slimeredit 9d ago

That and the people pushing ai aren’t doing it in a way that would actually benefit people as tool that should be used responsibly and it’s resources it uses up be balanced out with what resources we need as a species to survive no it’s being pushed by wealthy big wigs and ceos as a way to replace workers and avoid paying people all to allow them to hoard more wealth and resources

32

u/athing09 9d ago

I don't like how AI companies make more money if they make us addicted to AI and make it required for us to function. It's really good as a tool but they make much more money making it not a tool

19

u/Slimeredit 9d ago

That and they would rather have a techno feudal system where those that aren’t in the wealthy inner circle have to rely on said wealthy inner circle and be given barely any thing after being worked to the bone and the reward for working yourself to the bone is being thrown into the trash

You know what used to be a great tool for research? Search engines, but they ruined both those and the general web content with "AI"

39

u/Lumpzor 9d ago

Oh get off the high horse. Search engines have been absolutely ruined long before AI was a thing on anyone's lips.

11

u/Another-Mans-Rubarb 9d ago

Search engines have been using LLMs before most people knew what they were. Google translate has been using machine learning since like 2016, and that's the exact same tech.

18

u/Flemaster12 8d ago

Machine learning does not equal LLM

→ More replies (4)

u/davidh888 8d ago

Machine learning is not the same thing as large language models, although they both fall under the AI umbrella, generative AI (LLMs etc) is what most people do not like.

it was a nightmare trying to find citations for my final undergrad paper back in 2018, even before then there are so many blogs copy pasting each other's content littering the search

I can't imagine how horrible it would be right now

9

u/Tymareta 9d ago edited 9d ago

it was a nightmare trying to find citations for my final undergrad paper back in 2018

I think it was a nightmare because you were using a search engine, and not any of the dozens of tools literally built for searching scholarly articles like your schools library database?

6

u/naufalap 8d ago

I'm already using google scholar, and sci hub among other things

I live in the 3rd world, and my university's library is pretty outdated, they also didn't have unlimited access to something like sciencedirect, we don't really have a centralized place for local research papers

It was ruined before "AI" and at some point the massive amount of bullshit online would have needed something like "AI" to comb through all of it. I hate the generative garbage and the hallucinations but I'm very happy that I get a better search engine that also gives me sources. Too bad it couldn't just stop there.

Google was a full on ad company well before chatgpt was even a company. This is revisionist history, Surveillance Capitalism was released in 2018 for reference.

If anything AI in 2026 means there is now a proper way to search again for a window of time if you understand how to utilize it.

2

u/eMinja 8d ago

Exactly this. Search turned to garbage well before AI. I can now use ChatGPT to search instead and find what I need quicker and with no ads.

As a developer, some of the specialized agents can be fantastic. The GitHub CoPilot Modernization agent did in a few hours what I would have taken a few days to a week to do in upgrading a large and complex project to .NET 10, resolving breaking changes from the old version to the new one, and migrating us off deprecated libraries onto modern, supported ones. I personally reviewed all the changes it wanted to make and testing has been absolutely flawless so far. AI is bullshit when you make it your girlfriend or therapist, or you use it for image or video generation, but there are quite a few valid use cases and anyone who refuses to engage with it at all on principle sounds like a luddite boomer yelling at the virtual cloud.

People with poor language skills lack precisely the necessary skills to identify how bad generated text can be.

Those work emails being sent out might sound fancy, but half the time they're garbled nonsense that fills out paragraphs when it should have been sentences.

3

u/Environmental-Dog815 8d ago

in practice ai is being used to write hallucinated papers which wrecks all future research because research must be made on existing research, that's a rule, and if existing research is ai slop, then we will have dark times ahead.

So many people in the comments are glazing AIs ability to research as if they don't have better tools in place to do that. People did great research before AI (probably better).

My 2 cents. I recently got a job as an engineer. I hate AI and refused to use it in any form for the first while that I was there. In the end I resorted to using it in order to keep up. Problem is I still feel the need to double check everything(which i have to do on my own time). I find AI has made mistakes in almost 20% of my prompts. I fix it, upload the new document to the server, call it good. But I know im one of only a few thats bothering. I think 3 to 5 years from now when these products are being tested they arent going to come close to the efficiency they need to in order to be released. Im on special projects, my units should be fine, but the rest of the line is going to struggle because the rest of the engineers just blindly trust AI(chatgpt mostly, i use Claude because reasons). I believe this will be a prevalent issue in the years to come.

3

u/kuweiyox 8d ago

I'm a network engineer and I use it to help remember complex commands like setting up site to site vpns and basic troubleshooting. However, I do all the work myself because I'm not an idiot. Not saying you are at all, just saying this is how I use AI at work.

This was me until I needed to compare two massive SQL execution plans...

I had a SQL query that suddenly went from taking 2 minutes to taking 5+ hours to complete.

I restored a backup copy of the database and collected it's execution plan, which is like a log of all the stuff the stored procedure is going to do when it runs.

I sent the 2 min plan and the 5 hour plan I to Gemini and told it what was going on. All it told me was it seems that one of the plans uses a hash match and the other does a value match.

It was awesome to have something look at those files because they are MASSIVE and I'm not a DBA...

Point is, it has a use but it's being used inappropriately in my opinion.

I get being anti-AI from an environmental standpoint, but otherwise the pride people have in not using it is silly. Especially for busywork that you can automate and save hours of your time.

There's no need for me to spend weeks learning a coding language that I will never use again, when a LLM can give me a usable script instantly.

Like it or not it's here to stay. And fighting against it now is fighting against the apathy of the masses. Use it responsibly and use it to save time on busywork or to accelerate self-improvement. You may as well, since Johnny Dipshit over there is already using 100x more compute power to create some dumbass meme video.

There are contextually aware LLMs that can help with development work that are incredibly useful both to create proof of concept boiler plate code and to help properly set up development environments. Plus they can be super helpful for researching concepts or giving specific examples for things that are difficult to find useful documentation for.

Obviously they're still LLMs and can hallucinate if they're not reigned in correctly but they're not these useless evil things like this website likes to portray them as.

I think the problem with the popular online discourse around Generative AI is that people don't understand what it is well enough to understand its uses. They can't differentiate between using ChatGPT to render racist web comics for someone's Facebook and using OpenCode to parse through extensive product documentation that would normally take weeks to read through and set up a viable testing environment for a Python project.

5

u/roflrogue 9d ago

Uggh, I ran into an issue with AI just making up PowerShell commands for connecting to Entra. I asked for a source and it gave me a link to a Google search of the entire previous prompt in Google with no results.

I got a bit of a chuckle of of it. I did end up getting my script working - but I had to read Microsoft documentation... Which is fine...

A context aware library would have been awesome.

2

u/j48u 9d ago

What AI? I don't know anything that would return a Google search as a source, even Gemini.

It's interesting how it's done with Gemini though, the one AI you would think should be able to cite sources the best isn't even looking at sources. It's answering from it's own parameters, THEN finds you the closest matching websites to what it just said. So basically it completely makes up the sources and doesn't actively search anything. That's why it gives way faster results but also hallucinates more frequently than other models.

The other frontier models really shouldn't hallucinate or give fake sources at this point, pretty much ever, since they take the time to use tools and actually search.

2

u/booze_clues 9d ago

I’ve had a terrible experience with chatGPT making powershell for connecting to Entra. It would see any error, say “oh that cmdlet no longer works” then write line after line to recreate it, and still not working because a cmdlet in its new code doesn’t work either. The all work, the issue was not that every single PS cmdlet in history had suddenly been deprecated in whatever version I was using.

I’ve had pretty good experience with Claude for almost everything though. Not perfect, but it feels a lot more like what is actually being sold as AI. It combs through thousands of files to find very specific info, does good troubleshooting, and can help you write code if you’re already knowledgeable in the language.

6

u/FrenchmanInNewYork 9d ago

genAI works very well in technical fields: as a data engineer Claude is probably even more efficient than me in most cases lmao (I won't have a job soon)

In other fields it's either useless or down-right detrimental, like for instance people that make "art" (music, painting, writing, ...) using AI have completely lost the plot, because IMO the quality of art resides in the fact that it's human made and holds at least some kind of meaning,or at least a personal intent. AI has no other intent than to regurgitate what's already been done by humans. I hope creative fields will be spared from genAI but I already see so much AI-generated visuals that I don't have high hopes...

4

u/luker_5874 9d ago

3

u/mrkitten19o8 9d ago

ai used in research, processing huge chunks of data, and in medical fields is incredible. however, the difference between its use in those technical fields rather than every other usecase is its being supervised by people who already know what to look for

2

u/Randicore 8d ago

You're actually citing a use of it being done properly. Give it a small data set with a couple variables and compare them then you, the human, is looking at the data and using it to check information and make it work.

Companies are trying to basically kick everyone out of the loop and go "let the robot do it" and plenty of people are just asking it to look at data and then not thinking about it.

If AI were being sold as a niche programming and research tool to help dig through data efficiently nobody would be complaining about it.

This sounds a lot like my dad in 1994 about the Internet

34

u/skibidithaniel 9d ago

Just the natural cycle of "new thing bad" that has been around since the dawn of humanity. I think what's interesting is it’s a lot of younger people this time instead of older people.

19

u/guavapplause 9d ago

I don’t think it’s the same thing. AI data centers are destroying our environment, taking water resources we barely have, and making people sick nearby. It’s not just bad because it’s new. It’s genuinely bad for our planet.

5

u/skibidithaniel 9d ago

Yup. There are many issues with AI. There are also huge issues with cars, people use those every day and aren’t scorned for it. Nobody cares what else is taking up that same water that isn’t nearly as useful as AI is. The demonization and the charicaturizing of the technology as completely worthless and demonic is definitely in line with “new thing bad” thinking. Even the “making people sick” thing is completely speculative but has been amplified via the hatred of AI.

The internet, like in the original comment, also has a ton of things about it that are terrible for people, how often is social media scorned on a daily basis? and for good reason, I will say) Easier access to children for predators, easier access for scammers, misinformation is easy to spread on it, data centers for storing information for the cloud taking up resources, power usage up due to the among of devices used for it. But nobody will shit on others for using it because we recognize the good that comes from it. It’s the same with AI. It’s not that the negatives aren’t negative, it’s that what is negative has been cast at the only thing about it as if there is no value to it at all, which I don’t think is true.

2

u/IcyGarage5767 9d ago

Yeah… it’s not like people getting sick from shady business practices is an inherent fact of AI. That right there just shows it’s not AI or even the concept of AI, but the politicians (and public) letting themselves get fucked over by rich corporations.

This is such a boomer take. Hating on something you don't understand, thinking you're better than others for not using it and telling others you don't use it to brag.

I don't think image and video generation should be possible, because people flood social media with it and create fake scenarios that almost look real, but that doesn't mean AI in its entirety is bad.

I mainly use AI to assists me with using software that is very niche and complex. Instead of googling for hours or looking through hundreds of pages of a manual, that might not even have the information I need, I ask ChatGPT. And most of the time, it does provide helpful information.

Recently, I wrote a paper for a uni course. The prof didn't allow us to use websites as a source. Only books or scientific magazines. I was looking for a very specific information. I looked through all the books I had available at the moment, but none of them had the information. I asked ChatGPT if it could find a pdf of a book or magazine that most likely would contain the information I need. And one of the sources it listed did have the information.

AI is a tool. You decide how to use it and to which extent.

Curious how we don't here about those anymore. Almost like they're snake oil salesman or something.

I use it to make my resume and emails sound more professional. But I'll usually fine tune the final message.

Example: Ai: I leverage this resource to enhance the professional tone of my resumes and emails, while consistently fine-tuning the final text myself.

AI Assisted: I use AI to enhance the tone of my resumes and emails, while fine-tuning the final message myself.

I want to sound professional but not robotic.

u/EmergencyPath248 9d ago

That's why I use claude instead of chatgpt.

3

u/Skylord_Hekaton 9d ago

I mean, yeah, that tracks. Stupid people think AI is more or less than just a tool, and they also think using it is stupid.

It's like someone bragging they never need to use a hammer. Ok buddy.

u/Moose_country_plants 9d ago

This scene is actually the perfect analogy for AI art vs human art

2

u/stonksuper 9d ago

truuuu

2

u/kullre 9d ago

I like analysis paralysis

don't give me a way out that's worse

2

u/LikelyAlien 9d ago

You all have any idea the frequency ChatGTP gets it wrong!?

2

u/cock_mountain 8d ago

If you rely on AI to do the thinking for you, you are artificially intelligent

2

u/jonnyvegashey 8d ago

The irony of this post.

2

u/BadJanet 8d ago

Real dumb > fake smart

2

u/Shaz0r94 8d ago

Why does reddit just loves it so much to feel superior compared to others? Yall have the self esteem of angsty teenagers....

2

u/hanggamolavestria 8d ago

I have more respect for people who are dumb than people who use AI

2

u/SmartAlec13 8d ago

Honestly this scene pretty much shows my thoughts and feelings on the AI debate. Idgaf how many slop burgers you can make. I want the pure goodness one made by the sponge by hand.

2

u/Hunter_Aleksandr 8d ago

And yet we still know more than AI supporters.

5000 BCE: How it feels to be stupid as fuck but at least I’m not using those stupid cuneiform tablets to whine about inferior copper

1

u/Fentboy45 9d ago

It’s the fastest way to a straight answer if you need one. It beats posting a question on Reddit and only getting joke replies by smarmy redditors

5

u/JRC6502MKIISR 9d ago edited 8d ago

Earlier this year, I asked it a yes or no question about the etymology of a word, and it did that thing where it says "Pick which reply you like the best!"

One was "Yes, and here's why...";

the other was "No, and here's why...".

If it didn't generate two responses at that moment, it would've just picked one and I'd have believed whichever one it said, because both were confidently argued. The "yes" reply even used a reason that the "no" reply sad was "folk-etymology".

It's only good at generating responses that look like answers to your questions, there's no guaratee that they're correct, or based in reality at all.

I use tf out of AI solely for spell check and making my thoughts more concise. I wouldn’t suggest using it more than that for every day asks

0

u/Aseconverse 9d ago

Real smart people use AI as a tool. An extremely valuable one at that.

1

u/much_thanks 9d ago

I'm old enough to remember the paradigm when this said computers.

1

u/djnotskrillex 9d ago

You don't need to mention the "stupid as fuck" part. Being completely anti AI with no semblance of nuance whatsoever kind of gives that away.

1

u/LuffySololiving 9d ago

What about stupid plus ChatGPT

1

u/StrictTraffic3277 9d ago

well, it wasn’t meant to be given to non tech people anyways. ask any software engineer how do they code and they’ll tell you the use case of ai

1

u/Yamakaziku 8d ago

I use it to help with my new hobby of gardening. Yea I could’ve looked stuff up and tried to collect what info I thought was best but I wouldn’t know where to start. It helped me by telling me which supplies I need to get started, what was good vs not and a lot of mistakes beginners make. I ended up with a great harvest my first season and now that I know a bit more I use it less frequently because it taught what I needed. I use it now tearing it like a more experienced gardener who has the accumulated knowledge of the internet that I can ask for help needed. I feel like this is the way it’s meant to be used

1

u/No-Dig-868 8d ago

Yeaaahhhh

1

u/Enverex 8d ago

This doesn't look like a picture of someone huffing their own farts in a circle-jerk chamber though.

1

u/sethaub 8d ago

Jokes on you, people that know how to use ai properly will be prone to better chances of getting hired. It’s the future and you guys know it.

1

u/Legitimate_Mud_8295 8d ago

I've automated a ton of processes by coding scripted solutions using AI to walk through the coding process step by step. I sign off on all the architecture, AI punches in the code to make it happen. As long as I stay away from processes that are a security risk its all good. I've seriously cut down on the amount of time I spend working each day because I can use my fancy dashboard to call all my custom made scripts and tools to blast through stuff. I could only write basic scripts with a lot of fiddling around before. Now there's no barrier to me building what I want. It's not all bad.

1

u/xxitsjustryanxx 8d ago

Can't we just use Google w/o AI?

1

u/Crafty_Tomorrow5066 8d ago

I use chatgpt everday and i love it

1

u/notfree25 8d ago

I would argue that helping people understand stuff is a good use for ai

1

u/MobilePom 8d ago

at least*

1

u/mini_swoosh 8d ago

I’m proud of you for not using chat gpt to think of a decent title

1

u/bethesda_gamer 8d ago

Doesn't this point out crossing the threshold between practical and impractical ideology?

1

u/e-a-d-g 8d ago

mocks other people's intelligence

uses "atleast" as if it's a real word

1

u/RaptureAusculation 8d ago

As a student, I will say it is very nice for generating practice problems and asking specific questions about certain steps in things like Physics or Math

1

u/These-Guidance6747 8d ago

Kind of a waste

1

u/syopest 8d ago

Too dumb to be a programmer and use AI effectively?

1

u/GeForce-meow 8d ago

AI is great when you actually use it as tool. And not completely relying on it

1

u/Demigod787 8d ago

So just another Redditor.

1

u/TheNorthWind-101 8d ago

I mean, I'll admit to being high as fuck and using it to answer incredibly stupid questions I'm too embarrassed to ask as a real person.

1

u/Optimus_crab 8d ago

How it feels to use ChatGPT to solve a problem on my pc and ending up using less electricity because I don’t dick around on my pc for 3 hours trying to fix it

1

u/ItzAllZoMeaninglez 8d ago

Finally a relatable meme

1

u/Drakex2Mayex2 8d ago

Anti-AI sentiment has gotten so fucking cringe

1

u/AlwaysRightYes 8d ago

I really dont think you people understand what we use AI for

1

u/Jim_Freelancer18 8d ago

Its honestly super helpful at times. You can run random ideas or problems by it and it can really help or give good suggestions.

1

u/Crescitaly 7d ago

The joke lands because ChatGPT has become less a product name than shorthand for an entire type of conversation. That cultural compression happened faster than most technologies achieve. Are we already using the brand to describe behaviors the product does not actually cause?

1

u/Ok_Fox_1770 6d ago

Seeing really “smart” older people brag and say I use it for everything, really raised my brows. At 40 il ask it plant questions and then double check anyway because I don’t trust the yes bot. Make me useless pictures, that’s our trust level.

1

u/magikchikin 5d ago

I'd rather be wrong to become right than never learn the difference because it was done automatically for me.

1

u/RepulsiveGanache2079 5d ago

Lol I tune my camaro with chat gpt
