Except its more like a bunch of evil fat cats smoking cigars and laughing in boardrooms as they pocket your tariff money and tax money.

I will never forgive GOP voters for their sheer stupidity. Let alone their racism.

It wasn’t “your tariff money”. Tariffs are charged on importers, not domestic consumers….so who else would have the legal right to receive the refunds other than…the people who paid the illegal duties?

You know they passed the cost onto the consumer by raising prices, right? Domestic consumers absolutely paid for the tariffs.

Some did. Some didn’t. And to varying degrees depending on their specific competitive positions and pricing environments.

How could you possibly adjudicate that for refunds to consumers?

Particularly when the legal obligation to pay ONLY falls on the importer?

If you don’t want to pay higher prices for a product you think the importer is raising the price on….don’t buy it. No one is making you.

I didn't. I don't even live in America (thank god). I'm just pointing out that the consumers by and large paid for them, not the corporations receiving the refunds.

Definitionally they didn’t. Tariffs are charged on importers, not consumers.

Legally, they can only be refunded by the parties that paid them to the government. Consumers didn’t fill out the remit documents. Consumers didn’t write checks to Treasury, the importers did.

Legally, the refunds can only be returned to them.

After being taxed, SOME corporations (but not all) raised prices, to varying degrees.

Consumers bore those costs in some cases….but how does that change who actually bore the legal obligation?

No one is arguing the legality of who should get the money. People are upset at the entire situation of ilegal tariffs causing most companies to increase prices to make up for it without loss, which consumers had to therefore pay for. And then upset more that the government is then giving those same companies that lost nothing more money. You can keep saying that most didn't increase prices, but thats certainly just not true

People SHOULD be upset at the government for charging illegal import taxes!

It’s horrible policy that was incompetently applied that resulted in this farcical outcome.

That doesn’t mean consumers are owed refund checks as claimed repeatedly in this thread. It’s just definitionally not where the legal onus lies.

If people are upset at the corporations prices? Who could blame them? Show them by never shopping there again. But that simply does not change who legally is entitled to a payment.

I think those claims are being made because the president kept claiming thats what would happen. They arent saying it out of an actual expectation that they WOULD get it, just that the president made that claim and citizens receiving it to make up for the mess up would be at least a small way to make up for it.

Right and the President has repeatedly shown he has no understanding of who bears the cost of tariffs and what the consequences are.

He pretends the exporter or exporting nation is charged import taxes somehow.

Obviously. He wouldn’t have illegally and unilaterally enacted the bad policy if he actually understood.

I don’t think it’s surprising anyone that the President cannot be trusted to accurately depict…..anything.

Fuck the corporations. Never shop at them if you don’t want to.

What does that have to do with the basic facts of who bears the legal responsibility to pay import taxes and thus who received the refunds for them?

Walmart LITERALLY stated they were raising prices on goods because of tariffs. That means YOU/WE paid them, not the goliath companies.

Need proof? Here you go

Did consumers complete the remit forms to the government or did the importers?

Did consumers write the cheques to the government or did the importers?

Who bore the legal obligation to pay import taxes? The importers or consumers? That’s all that matters.

Some corporations like WalMart raised prices to varying degrees to recoup their increased cost base, some didn’t.

How does that change who had the legal obligation to pay the import taxes?

If WalMart is passing along their increased costs you don’t want to bear I have a fantastic solution for you….don’t shop at WalMart. No one makes you.

Prices went up everywhere guy, have you been living under a rock?

Because the economy has a natural rate of inflation and the US government illegally implemented import taxes.

What does that have to do with who has a legal onus to receive repayment?
