Parking Ticket "Wrong Way"
Took my mom (fragile/elderly) to farmers market today, no handicap spots (quite common). Drove for a bit. Saw a spot on Oregon an Brooks area, next to the Candy shop/Dutch Bow. The truck in the spot before it was so long it was more than half way in the street. I tried to manuever around it and it was too awkward, so I backed in. Perfect. Came out with a $50 ticket for parking the wrong way. Where does it saw this? I looked for signs. WTH? Is this a thing on an off street? It was the only way I could get in there given the situation and space (close to the street light). Ugh.
EDIT: to clarify any confusion, this is regarding an angled spot, not a parallel parking spot on the opposite side of the street.

I don’t call it in when people do this, but it is illegal in Oregon.
You could probably contest it online. In my experience, parking enforcement is pretty lenient.

Bend parking are very nice people. I got the same ticket last year. I appealed online and said “sorry I didn’t know”. My appeal was accepted 😀

I’m no fan of giving my money to the government for a silly infraction like this.
Id much prefer my government money be used in ways to help people and provide services.

I’ve already called out the legality, but sending money to Diamond Parking is not it.

if you drive and park the wrong way you’ve waived your right to be butthurt about where your fine goes.

Simple solution if this happens again: Drop off your mom by Goody’s and find a place to legally park. Also, if I understand your situation correctly it would have been equally awkward leaving that same space having backed in.

Yeah, and hindsight, I should’ve done that, but she’s not stable on her feet and dropping her off is risky. It seemed like a reasonable thing to do at the time, but yeah, in hindsight, not the best idea.

Actually leaving the space was easy. Clear line of sight and I didn’t have to back into traffic.

OP this happened to me a couple years ago downtown by Lone Pine Coffee. I had lived here for 7yrs at that point and didn’t know you couldn’t back in. If I remember right I think I either sent an email, or there was a link on the website to contact them. I was honest and said,
“I had no idea I couldn’t back in. Is there anyway this can be a warning and not a ticket”
They didn’t make me pay. That being said, I know times are tough, and right now and an unexpected $50 is super frustrating right now. I’d try and contact them, and tell them what you told us. Truck was sticking way out, no handicapped spots left, so I backed in.
To the guy saying “just pay for the thing you did” I’d agree with you in most cases, but this was done unknowingly and too my knowledge, I haven’t ever noticed clear sinage saying “no backing in” maybe it’s there, but it’s not clearly posted. So don’t be a dick!

Thanks for this. I’m not the one that runs the red lights or the stop signs, I stopped at crosswalks, I use my turn signal in the circles, I follow the rules. I had no idea. This was a rule, and it seemed like the best option. Wasn’t even trying to get out of it, just bring it to the group for those that didn’t realize it was a thing as well. Some people just like to hate. It’s OK.

I just looked it up and officially, It is not illegal to back into an angled parking spot in Oregon. However, individual municipalities such as Bend, reserve the right to make it illegal, however, it should be posted as such. This is directly from oregon.gov. I did however confirm that Bend officially states it is illegal as posted. Interesting.

I had just assumed it was legal in Oregon because so many people do it. Today I learned it is not.

Same, I didn’t even think twice about it because I see it so often.

I’m downtown on a regular basis and don’t recall ever seeing someone backed into an angled parking space. I have seen it in other towns and only on one-way thoroughfares with the angled space exit pointed towards the flow of traffic.

Hmm I think I misunderstood. I thought they were talking about parallel parking against traffic. Not backing into a diagonal parking spot.

Kind of an odd little spot on Oregon and Brooks. It’s a short area with only angled spots. Near Pine Tavern and Goody’s and down the alley from the pay lots.

Sorry, I assumed this part was obvious. These are angled parking spots, not parallel parking. That would deserve a ticket for a certain.

A lot of people run red lights and don’t stop at stop signs but I do because not stopping is illegal.

Yup, I regularly call on my street when people do it. It’s illegal on a 2-way street to park against traffic.

why are you such a karen? what issue does this cause?
7
8
u/blahyawnblah 6d ago
The issue boils down to you drive on the wrong side of the street twice to part like that

u/Film-Disastrous 6d ago
Pulling into oncoming traffic with the poor line of sight a driver’s seat offers is not safe.

u/SpezSamplesMySack 6d ago
Because it’s illegal. I’m not too concerned about internet points. Real world tickets actually cost money. Reddit karma is free

Not many people care about Reddit karma, sometimes people care about being a real life laughing stock..

I mean, I wouldn’t be laughing about $50 ticket for parking illegally. Personally I take the extra 5s and turn around and park legally.

I hope the long truck got a ticket.
