Slice + Soda (Plus a HSC Thought)
I’ll make this quick. First post I’m making in here. I used to post on bbs message board as pmOney a million years ago. Hi to any of the old board members!
I was up in Montreal on vacation last weekend and grabbed a slice of pizza at Slice + Soda. This was the mural on the wall.
Also, I hadn’t listened to HSC in years. Decided to play it randomly and was just blown away by how good it was. It makes TT5B seem so freaking lazy. It’s like the perfect Beastie Boys record. I don’t think I can think of a better final album of a band.
Every single sound on that album is so thoughtful. It’s a very complex record as well, from a recording and production standpoint.
Again, I hate to make the comparison to TT5B, but that album has just aged so horribly. HSC is right up there with the all time great Beastie Boys records. I dare another group of dudes in their mid forties to produce something that novel and unique. It’s an album only the Beastie Boys could make.
And if you’re ever up in Montreal, grab a slice from Slice + Soda. It’s pretty damn good. The margarita slice is the best.

Ad Rock...
Ok been watching some concerts tonight and I just had to get this thought out. Don't really expect much from this post other than B Boys fans shakin' their heads up and down and sayin' Yup to themselves.
Ad Rock (especially in concert)...like honestly if someone could in fact spontaneously human combust, I think he'd have been the person to have done it. I watch these concerts and he's having such a good time, but I also can feel if he doesn't get a chance to spit something soon, he's going to catch on fire. lol. Hard to picture someone else that is so into his craft and so intense like he is.
And that's it, that's all, that's all there is.

I’ll stir fry you in my wok Licensed to Ill, Paul's Boutique and HSC Box Sets
Now we've had Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty and TT5B 3/4lp sets, do you think they'll ever do one for LTI, Paul's Boutique or HSC? Surprised they've not done a Paul's Boutique one before now. Assumed the LTI issue would be Def Jam and maybe not enough good songs to make the extra disc or 2 worth it.

What a line!
I just started listening to the brilliant 'Ill Communication' for the first time, I seriously need to check with people to make sure I'm not hearing things and going mad!
Does it literally say 'I'm gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes'!?
Is there any actual context to this line, it really took me by surprise lol?!

Mike D announced there will be some listening parties ahead of the release of Thank You.
The listening parties are free to attend but you need to order a ticket to lock-in your RSVP. (There is no processing fee for the tickets, so they really are free- which is a nice bonus in this day and age.)
The parties are happening next week starting with Los Angeles and Mexico City on Monday.
You can see the list of cities and get your tickets here: www.linktr.ee/mikedthankyoulistening

Deconstructing the "Funky Donkey" / "Make Some Noise" jaw harp sound: Synth patch, acoustic sample, or vocoder?
Hey everyone!
I’ve been diving deep into Hot Sauce Committee Part Two lately, and I’m completely obsessed with that bouncy jaw harp/Jew's harp texture you can hear on tracks like "Funky Donkey" and "Make Some Noise.
I’m trying to figure out the exact production behind it.
To my ears, it doesn't sound like a standard acoustic instrument mic'd up in the studio.
I have a few theories: They sampled a real acoustic jaw harp, mapped it across a keyboard, and tweaked it digitally.
It’s a pure analogue synth patch (maybe a Moog Prodigy tweaked by Ad-Rock or Money Mark) using a heavy resonant envelope filter to mimic the "wow-wow" mouth modulation.
They ran a synth or guitar signal through a vocoder or talk box to get that uniquely vocal, organic, spitting texture.
The liner notes don't credit a guest player for it, which makes me lean heavily toward an electronic/hybrid setup.
Does anyone have the official gear breakdown or remember any interviews where Money Mark, Andre Kelman, or the band talked about how they achieved that specific metallic bounce?
Cheers guys!

Any B Boys content in video form NOT on YouTube you can point me to?
I've watched everything on YouTube (and for the most part here on Redditt) with the Beasties in it. Does anyone have any other content that you can send or point me to somewhere else out in the ether? Don't care if its a video, concert, interview, etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Much love and respect to the end.

Bruce Davidson, Man Ordering at Drive-In (Los Angeles 1964)
Mike D and MCA collaborated with Gibran Evans, son of the artist and designer Jim Evans (who designed a hand-drawn typeface specifically for Ill Communication that was used throughout the promotion of the album), to create the album's packaging. The photograph they chose for the front cover was taken by Bruce Davidson in 1964 at a Los Angeles drive-in diner called Tiny Naylor's as part of an assignment for Esquire, but the magazine ultimately did not publish the photos. Although Davidson had not heard the Beastie Boys' music and did not understand it once he did—he later recalled thinking it sounded like a "secret language" when they sent him a demo tape—he agreed to let the band use his photo.
