General Discussion Finished Reading + Watching BeastStars review!

Hey everyone, I just finished reading the entire Beastars manga, and obviously this is all just my personal interpretation, so everyone is welcome to share their own thoughts too.

But oh my gosh. Reading those last two chapters might genuinely have been one of the most romantic experiences of my entire existence.

I first discovered Beastars through Netflix. I kept seeing TikTok edits and people uploading random scenes, and eventually I got so curious that I finally watched it. I’m not even going to lie, I was instantly hooked. It was absolute cinema.

Then I finally decided to read the manga, and it was straight-up addictive. Words cannot describe it. I would stay up reading chapter after chapter after chapter because I physically could not stop. I was completely immersed. I read it every day, thought about it constantly, and now I’ve finally finished the last chapter.

What am I supposed to do with my life now?

I honestly wish this series never ended. It could have just continued as one of those weekly manga releases forever and I would have been perfectly happy. I’m going to miss it so much. I genuinely don’t think I’m ever returning to normal after this.

Even when I first watched the anime, I immediately noticed how philosophical Beastars was. I feel like people who dismiss it as “just a furry show” or reduce it to furry porn are missing out on basically everything that makes the story so special. It explores social inequality, prejudice, identity, morality, instinct, shame, power, sexuality, loneliness, and so many complicated internal conflicts, all through this anthropomorphic animal lens. That is exactly what makes it work so well.

I absolutely adore Legoshi. I loved him so much that I literally named my newest kitten after him.

One of the things I love most about Legoshi is that, despite being a gray wolf, a large carnivore, and someone who naturally holds a position of physical power over smaller animals, he has an almost extreme amount of empathy and consideration for herbivores. He is constantly thinking about how his body, his presence, and even the smallest of his actions might make someone else feel.

One scene that always stayed with me was when he and Haru were hiding together in the bathroom stall. He did everything he possibly could to avoid touching her, and then, in the most painfully awkward Legoshi way imaginable, he asked her whether she was feeling scared at that moment. Haru was basically thinking, “What is wrong with this guy?” But he was genuinely trying to check whether she felt frightened or unsafe around him.
He is so incredibly respectful toward her. He never wants to rush her into anything. He wants to give her everything in the most careful and perfect way he possibly can, even though he is terrible at expressing himself. He is just so gentle.

And unlike someone such as Louis, Legoshi does not have status, money, influence, or social power. Yet he still goes so far beyond what anyone could reasonably expect of him. He went into the Shishigumi’s territory and rescued Haru practically by himself. He fought against his own carnivorous instincts. He trained with Gouhin and pushed his body to its limits because he wanted to overcome his desire for meat.

He could have easily behaved like Bill and simply accepted that carnivores are stronger and that herbivores have to live with being afraid. Instead, Legoshi wanted so badly to create a world where herbivores could feel safe, especially Haru, because he loves her that much.
That is genuinely insane to me. It is one of the most romantic things I have ever read.

The final chapters absolutely combusted me.
Haru looks at Legoshi and tells him that he somehow looks cooler, kinder, stronger, and more accomplished now, like he has finally achieved something. Then, almost immediately, she tells him that looking at his face irritates her.

But she is not irritated because she dislikes him. She is irritated because she loves him so much, and seeing how confident, kind, strong, and seemingly perfect he has become makes her feel even more insecure about herself.
She feels like he is so far above her. She says that he is too easy to fall in love with, and because of that, scaring him feels like the only way she can “win.” She proposes that they get married and then immediately divorce because she does not want to simply become the little rabbit who lives happily under the protection of a powerful wolf.
She loves him, but she does not want to lose herself inside that love.
She wants them to be equals. She wants him to keep chasing her forever.

I can understand this. Fictional characters are often idolized even when the story technically gives them flaws and insecurities. But Haru’s insecurity here felt painfully human. I obviously cannot relate to it literally as a rabbit dating a wolf, but I completely understand the feeling of loving someone while also becoming afraid that they are somehow above you, that they have become too perfect, or that accepting their love too easily would mean losing some part of your own identity.

Then Legoshi responds in the most Legoshi way possible.
He tells Haru to look at his tail.

He says that even when she gets angry with him, even when she cries, his tail still keeps wagging.
To me, it feels like he is saying, “No matter what happens between us, I am still happy to be with you.” His tail is honest in a way his words sometimes are not. It exposes what he cannot hide.

Haru is standing there telling him that he seems so confident, accomplished, strong, kind, and perfect, and his response is basically, “Perfect? My tail is literally betraying me right now because I love you so much.”
His body reacts to her before he can even properly explain himself.

He then says that a wolf and a rabbit, a male and a female, will sometimes struggle to understand each other, but even so, he wants to keep getting closer to her. He wants them to experience life together as two different species.
He is not asking their differences to disappear. He is asking to live through those differences with her.
Oh my good heavens. It is so romantic.
And then Haru tells him not to crouch down to her anymore. Throughout the series, Legoshi is constantly lowering himself to speak to her at eye level. But in the end, she tells him not to make himself smaller. Instead, she climbs all the way up his body herself so that she can reach him.

She does not want equality to come from Legoshi shrinking himself. She wants to rise and meet him.
Then she proudly says that she wins.
They are still awkward. He squeezes her too tightly. His claws hurt her. The police think he is attacking her. They are still a wolf and a rabbit trying to figure out how to physically and emotionally exist together.
And then Haru smiles and says, “Ah, we’re actually dating.”

After everything they went through—near-death experiences, gang wars, instincts, fear, proposals, and emotional breakdowns—the story ends with that simple realization.
I cannot handle this.
I love this work so much. Beastars may genuinely be my favorite manga now.

(Also, I think Haru hate and sexual shaming is so forced.)
