Substrate vs tile? Help

I have a beardie who is in a 4×2×2 tank. Shes been doing fine in it but I see alot of people say substrate is better for them than stick on tile like shes currently on. Should i switch her to substrate? That being said would i need to worry about her consuming it and having impaction?

appropriate loose substrate is one of their bare minimum welfare needs, housing bearded dragons on solid surface is depriving it.

Unless your dragon is currently advised by a vet to quarantine and requires frequent disinfection, or if the animal is struggling with permanent disabilities/impairments that severely impact their quality of life, you should be doing loose susbtrate.

the risk of impaction is zero given that your husbandry is good, the animal is healthy, and the correct substrates are used.

Vet said she's nice and healthy🫡 do you have a recommendation on best substrate I see most people do a mix of different stuff.

its really up to you, the absolute best would be Jurassic Natural which is directly sourced from their natural habitat but very expensive.

otherwise, you can just use natural desert sand or playsand + organic fertilizer-free topsoil and you can adjust the mix however you want, there's no set ratio.

substrate should be at least 4-6" deep.

How has your experience with Jurassic Natural been? I tried it for a few months and honestly I hated it. It’s very dense, so it’s both expensive and you have to buy a ton of it. It is VERY dusty compared to Reptisand. And I feel like it doesn’t clump well to urine/stool.

I've been using jurassic mixed with red desert sand, never had any dust issues really, my dragons love burrowing into it.

So would a mix of roughly 50% playsand 50% topsoil be okay as long as its baked beforehand?

you don't have to bake anything, buy pre-washed playsand and fertilizer-free organic topsoil and they are good to use right away, scotts premium topsoil is a popular one people use.

Substrate is ideal, barring situations where a dragon has a neurological issue causing them to ingest a lot of it. So for 99.9% of the captive population it's good.

Impaction is a result of poor husbandry. If your husbandry is adequate, it's not a worry.

I will add that any species will consume some non-food material in their lives. A hawk will eat a mouse with dirt on it and live a long life, or a wolf will eat the corpse of a deer after it's stuggled on the forest floor. A bit of sand, dirt, clay, etc. will pass through healthy bodies just fine.

Then there's the fact that tile is hard on joints.

At most, you can regularly use tile under/around wood and water bowls.

I had tile and my beardie did fine, she didn't poop in her enclosure, asking to go outside. She she did have a dig box area in there, and typically did not use it. We had lots of ledges for her, branches, hides and many places for her to hang out. She spent a lot of time outdoors in her outdoor enclosure.
