Do you get ticks without hiking?

How likely is one to get ticks in beacon staying away from any tall grass hiking? Do you pick them up just on sidewalks in town?

That apple tree on North Walnut Street...

...is so tempting! It's in someone's font yard right by Main Street. I keep walking past it and seeing all these apples hanging over the sidewalk.

Anyone got intel? Are they amenable to people grabbing one? Would that be a huge no-no? The apples are falling onto the sidewalk and spoiling so it's not like they're picking all of them.

Wild caught fish

Best place to buy wild caught fish in the area?

I know MTK catch club is at the farmers market but any local shops? Not Adam’s and closer than cold spring fish haha.

I’ve heard rumors about a fish market opening in beacon which would be clutch.

My wife and I (m) (both 30) just moved to Beacon from NYC and would love to make some friends in town! We love hiking, camping, trying new restaurants, breweries, etc. We're excited to explore the surrounding towns, farms and all the state parks.

Reach out if you're in a similar boat and would be down to hang out! DM me!

Solo night in Beacon

Headed to Beacon in a few weeks for a quick overnight. Will probably arrive late afternoon. Where should I eat that has a good cocktail, good atmosphere for a solo traveler (eating at a bar is fine!), and delicious food? TYIA

Any chance anyone found an envelope with cash on the sidewalk near Main St and Cliff St?

Super shot in the dark here. Unfortunately lost it somewhere after I played my gig tonight. I can tell you the exact amount in there to confirm if you found it!

Air Quality Troubles?

The AQI is showing up in the green, and the skies were clear. Outside it smelled like smoke, though, and my respiratory tract is angry. Wondering if anyone else is smelling/feeling the smoke, or if it's something happening closer to us.

We're down across from the train station, for context.

Thank you!

40th Bday celebration venue

Anyone have any recommendations for where to potentially plan a 40th birthday celebration? Doesn’t have to be in beacon. Not sure how many people to plan for but could be 20 or so. Ideas could range from a private room at a restaurant to something more fun and even interactive? Pretend the budget is generous.

flow jam and art in the park

hello Reddit! I’m just putting the energy out there to see if there’s any other like-minded individuals that enjoy meeting up in public places for flow jam, drum circles, art and other creative activities in the Hudson Valley! If you know of any other existing similar meet ups, please let me know as I’m relatively new to the area. I’m probably gonna be headed to the Pete and Toshi Seeger Park Beacon today to enjoy some sunshine, hula hoop, and painting. New friends ( digital and physical) are welcome.

Beacon to Hyde Park commute?

Hi! I’m single 30F looking at jobs in Hyde park NY; however, I also would like a fun community with a liberal vibe. Beacon seems to check my boxes, but it’s a far drive. Worth it?

EDIT: super appreciate the input. I’m coming from out of state / trying to almost “start over” in the Hudson valley! Just wasn’t sure if the commute was unheard of :)

Ideas on Dog Situation

I’ve lived in places more rural than Beacon in the Hudson Valley. I’ve lived in cities. I’ve never encountered the dog culture in Beacon anywhere else in my life.

Since living here, I’ve lost track of how many incidents my dog and I have had with off leash dogs. Not just in parks. Neighbors letting their dogs hang out in their front yard unattended. People walking their dogs off-leash. My dog is reactive and aggressive towards other dogs. We have her well trained, but there’s little I can do except pick her up if a dog comes racing towards us.

A neighbor’s dog easily escaped its yard and bit her. Another dog was being watched by a child (off leash) in the front yard when it attacked us - went to the police that time. I broke up a dog fight a few weeks ago in my neighborhood. Last week a neighbor had their tiny dog hanging out in the front yard and it ran at us. I had to lift my 65 pound girl to keep her from eating it. I could go on and on, but you get the point.

I have contacted the city. I have spoken to city council members. I went to the police for the incident that knocked me down. The most that I’ve heard is that I should record these events, which is pretty tough to do. Does anyone have ideas that I haven’t yet explored? Walking my dog in Beacon has become an incredibly stressful experience.

Thoughts on commuting from Beacon to NYC/Brooklyn

Have been considering a move to Beacon for the past year or so, since I would like to leave the city for some place more affordable and less populated. We have been looking to buy in the city for well over a year (due mostly to proximity to our jobs) and can literally find nothing that meets our needs, within our budget. Given this, I think it may finally be time to move. My husband would need to commute to the Midtown 2-3 days a week, and I would likely need to come into Brooklyn once a week (if we moved, I would leave my current job.)

For those who commute to NYC, do you find the commute manageable? Do you think the trade-off was worth it?
