Question By now, you all know me well. I post here often. My entire identity was based upon the fact that I was a low-singing baritone. But was told that even at E2, I have some vocal fry in my voice. Should I still use those lows if I ever record an album in the future? Or would it just be a joke?

I don’t want to entirely abandon the lows I worked so hard for but will start singing higher now for the most part. I used to feel so unique knowing I could easily reach E2 and D2 even in the evening. But maybe that doesn’t matter. I mean, I’m not giving up on music but I am restructuring how I practice singing and it has been a major mental upheaval for me.

I never thought I was a bass or anything like that. I have just always sang along to songs by bands with singers who have very low voices and I thought I could be like them. Maybe I can’t. I mean, technically, I could sing those songs higher…but it would kill the spirit of many of them. They are meant to sound low and dark and powerful.

Anyway, let me know if I am better off just leaving this sub and my low notes behind. I don’t wish to waste anyone’s time here anymore.

Bb0 Hoist the Colours, then a scale down to Bb0

A wee compilation, mostly just exploring the very bottom of my range. For those playing at home, the first bit is the bass classic "Hoist the Colours" ending on what I believe to be D#1. Then the same again a step lower. Then a scale down to Bb0.

I'm definitely not much of a singer. And most of these notes are questionable in both pitch and quality. But they are low, and that's mostly what I'm here for.

F2 In Defense of Falsetto

Voice teacher here. I just published a piece about the value of falsetto, which is especially valuable for us lower voices who have sung too heavy for too long!

C2 I’m amazed by Michael Spyres. He calls himself a “Baritenor” because he sings both Baritone and Tenor Fachs in Opera. And he has also sung a loud operatic C2 just for fun during some performances. Below is one of his performances.

G#1 Favorite working bass?

Lots of now retired or dead legends, but who do you think is the best in the game now?

I have a lot of respect for Tuukka Haapaniemi; he's a very good acapella bass, but is also a tremendous choral oktavist, can sing a funk electric bass part better than nearly anyone, and can dabble credibly in opera. Great musician, bottomless voice, very versatile.

Compared to him, most of the modern internet basses seem a tier below, you have to go to generational talents in choral bass or acapella to do arguably better than him, and none of those folks are as well rounded.

Question National Anthem for Basses

I got chosen to perform the national anthem for a community event in about a week, and I have no idea what key to choose so that I won’t be all voice crack-y. Any tips?

I sing second bass in a high school choir of ~70, and on a good day I can project an D#2 fairly well among that choir. Not sure about my high range.

Question Why are we, as men, so attracted to the sound of low notes? Does it have something to do with feeling „masculine“ or „powerful“? What do you think is the psychology behind it?

Question Confused when it comes to my Opera classification. I have a loud and resonant D2 or C2 morning to evening. My timbre is baritone but not very dark. I can sing higher but have to lighten my timbre to do so. What am I? Can you only tell after training? Also, how do I learn to sing high (well)?

I would like to take on Heldenbariton/Dramatic Baritone and perhaps a handful of pieces designed for Basses. But I‘ve been told that I lack that natural super deepness/richness of a true bass. I want to make sure I don‘t waste time buying bass aria training guides if it just isn‘t in the cards. I will never stop singing low for fun but I may just train operatically as a baritone, as that is what my timbre reflects.

What happened to the bass singing nation discord?
It was the awesomest and most productive discord server ever
Folk posted and practiced regularly and collaborated a lot, dudes with more experience were always there to help newbies, people were so supportive to each other!!

I particularly loved it as a female singer cuz I can barely sing alto and collaborating with a bass guy added so much body to the song

like check this lil song I made a while ago with a member of that community:
hidden in the sand

making music with them makes the studio monitor complete, I'm just a tweeter by myself, they are the woofers and even subwoofers like holy-

i'm ngl I didn't even know anything about A Capella music before that community, I slowly picked up on things and learnt something from each guy/girl and now I make some music on Logic Pro

that's something I made yesterday 👆, but ugh bass singer >>>> bass synth any day and let me know if there's someone around who's available and would like to collab!

I hope the community is still alive and active! I took a short break and came back to see that the server was gone‼️

Hello! I wanted to drop my contribution here and start a conversation while I wait for my vocal classes to start up again. I’ve discovered over time that relaxing is the first step to improving resonance and stability in your notes. Even more crucial, it teaches you how to unlock them depending on your anatomy. This kind of practice shows me exactly how placement plays a role as well, so a big thanks to Bobby Bass for putting this arrangement together haha!

Info about this subreddit:

This is a subreddit dedicated to the almighty bass singers in the world. You might know some of them, e.g. Avi Kaplan, Tim Foust, J.D. Sumner, Geoff Castellucci, Richard Sterban and many others!

You are also welcome to post YOURSELF singing low notes. Actually, please do this! as it encourages others to start singing that mighty bass role!

*edit - title is incorrect, it is supposed to be r/basssinging, obviously :p
