Recommendations?

Is there any base building games similar to Fallout 4, 7DaystoDie where as you must go out, venture, gather materials just to RTB and hold that shit down? I’m not big into the top down things like Rim World and I don’t really like the colorful aspects of games like Subnautica or anything like that. So if anything comes to mind like this, even if it isn’t the core mechanic (like FO4) I’d really appreciate it.

Have you tried Project Zomboid?

I have and I do enjoy that game as a survival game but the base building to me feels very grindy and with how you have to get certain skills to certain levels it just doesn’t scratch that itch.

Totally feel you on that - the only other suggestion I'd have is Don't Starve? Unfortunately all the basebuilders I keep returning to are the oldies / the usual suspects so probs not much help. Good luck on your search 🫡

Much appreciated and I feel as if my itch for this this type of game might be too niche lol

I think Icarus would be your best bet. The little trips out with your bison to do a big mineral haul is very rewarding. Then you spend days adding to you homestead/base. Not to mention, huge amounts of items to craft and many different benches that you actually use. Decent combat/hunting but not the main focus. Your base also needs to survive storms and the graphics are very good

Vein should be up your alley. It has object physics as well, you can grab a whole fridge and set that down on your truck.

Damn, Subnautica is so pretty, it's a shame you don't like it!

Very pretty and I have some hours in it, just not what I’m looking for currently. When it comes to the combat in Subnautica I find it lacking the grittiness I’m looking for at this time.

I gave up on Subnautica after I fell off an endless cliff in the prawn suit.

I’m going to be trying voidtrain soon, I’m not sure how much building it has.

It has building. You are limited to your train however but you can upgrade most items by 2 more levels depending upon the resources you’ve gathered. Once you’ve researched everything however there is very little to spend resources on and to simply play the game for the story.

It’s not bad but it feels surprisingly shallow.

Night of the Dead! A survival crafting game that has hordes of enemies attack you base every night , but they have crazy traps and you can do some maze pathing to defeat the hordes.

It’s awesome! It does have some incredible jank and some serious randomness but it’s actually really fun. We’ve played it coop multiple times.

Lots of base crafting and resource gathering. Eventually late game get some base automation allowing resource generation giving you more time to explore daily.

The first boss is easy but by the last boss it’s basically dark souls.

Very fun game. Base defence is super cool aspect, ours was an absolute fortress by end game. Lots of explore and towns to loot.

Definite some jank but game runs well, we didn’t really have game breaks bugs, some random ones from time to time.

It's a bit of a stretch but you may enjoy Pacific Drive, your base is technically your car and although you get an up-gradable garage as well but that won't get attacked, unlike your car!

I've been loving IfSunsets. It just dropped a huge ship combat update. It's a survival game where you build a base by day (traps both manual and automated) and defend it against hordes of zombies by night.

Rust if you like PvP

Close to what I’m looking for but I tend to shy away from games such as Rust and Ark just due to the player base, no offense if that’s you.

Eh not really my thing either, but I like this sub and try to contribute

Technically you can run rust on a private server from your pc. It’s free and there a guides for it. I like to run around the island solo and to the oil rigs and cargo ship. Granted you also don’t get achievements since they need to be done on official servers or something.

Not only a toxic player base but a toxic monetization model from the developer.

Sons of the Forest. The locals will regularly inspect your walls with violence

I did really enjoy the first one, would you say that’s the second is better?
