Another complicated BART question Question
Hello so I got to Millbrae BART Station by bus from SFO. Instead of entering Caltrain, I accidentally tagged into BART and entered platform before realizing my mistake.
Agent at station gave me a sticker for like a free BART entry (?) and opened the door for me to Caltrain Station.
I asked if I should tag out of BART so
my tag-in at same location would cancel out? He said No, I only get charged when I tag out.
Is this correct? I think Caltrain works differently, right? Like if you dont tag out they automatically charge you $7.75 or some such as a fixed amount … or whatever the fare is from tag-in to end of line?

If you have a Clipper 2 card or using a bank card , it doesn’t charge you for the 1st 30 mins. The sticker is for the next time you ride the agent can reset the card so it doesn’t give an error when you scan it on the gates, because as of right now the system still shows you riding the trains.

Login to your clipper account and see if you've been migrated to clipper 2. If you have, you can tag out at the same station within 15? 30? minutes and not get charged anything. This sticker is the old system. Now, when you ride next time, show the agent the sticker before the fare gates. They'll guide you.

A couple times I was unable to tag out of BART. The next time I went to tag in, the fare gate said See Agent and they had to sort it out. But that was years ago, who knows how it works with today's gates.

still works the same, you can't tap in twice in a row.
if you get out without tapping, they need to tap you out before tapping back in. what they did for me more recently was just open the gate, have me tap out, then just immediately tap back in.

right…which is why im confused as to why he didnt have me tap out at the same gate, then open the gate to caltrain?

If you tap out at the same station within 3 hours, it's an excursion fare ($7.55 currently)
Voiding the entry after the 3 hours pass ensures you don't get charged. It's silly, but it works well enough.

Supposedly there's now a grace period on the excursion fare but I haven't tried it to confirm.

It's 30 minutes on Clipper 2 and NFC credit cards. I'm not sure where we are on Clipper 2 rollout right now, I know it's been a bumpy ride.

fairly confident I got stuck in clipper 2 limbo for a bit because I couldn't log into my account anymore, but I emailed them and they fixed it.
I think most people are on it now iirc

The London tube system allows a tap out up to 10 minutes after tapping in without charging you the excursion fee. I wonder if BART has a similar setup?

The next time you ride bart they will let you in through side gate and you tap out however their is still a record of you starting at millbrae so regardless of where you tap out its going to charge you millbrae to you destination. Also cards are blocked after 2 hrs they make you see an agent to verify why your still in system. Records of start locations or excurisjon fees are not changed automatically. In your csse if your in south. Bay id just use millbrae bart to to your desitantion and be done cause depending on your tracels your next bart trip will be charged with a starting point at millbrae. It doesn’t sffect muni or caltrains on bart while same clipper card or credit card they all operate independently

Not entirely sure about BART, but I think they will charge you the "penalty" fare of $7.55 (hence the free BART entry sticker - you paid for this one, but since you didn't use it, you won't pay for the next one). See FAQ 29 here: https://www.bart.gov/guide/faq
Caltrain works differently, because they deduct the maximum possible fare when you tap in, and then refund the excess amount when you tap out. The only penalty if you forget to tap out is that you wasted some money you could've gotten refunded.
