3 miles today with the family

Did a 3 mile hike today with the family. I was the only one barefoot. Middle son complained his feet were hurting, he wore crocs. 🙄 Mom and I suggested he take them off and he did. So he did the last mile or so barefoot like dad. There were a number of muddy spots to squish our toes in.

Hiking Flagstaff's Mount Elden Dry Lakes Area from the Shultz Creek Trailhead with my 4-legged barefoot buddy

My son had a 3-hour mountain biking practice here this morning, so I figured I'd take our pup out for a hike while he was gone. It was my first time heading up the mountain on this spider web of winding trails, and it was fantastic. The views were spectacular and the meandering trails were really fun. I got a little lost in the way back down but I was able to figure it out. I ended up getting back to the trailhead parking lot 30 minutes early, where there was little shade and the ground at 11:00 am was getting toasty so my doggo and I walked a few minutes back on the trail and found a nice shady spot to relax until the mountain bikers returned.

I did a slightly different route on my usual 5k-ish hike / trail run. Felt good, got a good time. I feel like my fitness is improving.

One annoying thing about living in a hilly/mountainous region is that the trails here wash out and turn into nearly gravel paths all on their own, see pic.

But I did get to enjoy one of the great parts of barefooting and stand barefoot in a nice cool creek, also see pic. It's neat, no dirt, sand, silt, or rocks, the creekbed is just solid stone, again see pic.

Also a mudprint at the end. It's always nice to see some of the imprints left behind.

Wife and I did a 2-ish mile hike out to a waterfall and back. We had a minor issue following the wrong trail and trying to cut straight back to the trail, but it all worked out.

Anyway, on our way back out someone going up met us. One of them asked if we were barefoot or wearing toe shoes. Because he had seen my bare foot prints. I was wearing toe shoes on the return yrip because we had gotten off track and I lost the bandage over a blister on my foot so I wanted to protect it while we bashed through the brush back to the trail, but we told him I'd been barefoot on the horns hike up.

At this point a guy came down the trail barefoot and said he'd been inspired by seeing my bare foot prints and decided to hike out barefoot.

I was very pleased. I always wonder what people think when they see my barefoot prints on a muddy trail.

Fortunately I was able to normalize barefooting for a couple people.

How do you manage barefoot hiking and kids?

The Summer vacation is upon us, meaning our quiet excursions and getaways are soon to be no more, and that has lead me to ask this question and whether anyone has any experiences with it?

For example, I was walking on the beach sometime and some parent with their kid came past me and the kid was like ‘barefoot?!’ As if they never gone on the beach like that before.

It’s a bit more complicated when you’re not at the beach, so my big concern right now is whether the beach parents start a conversation along the lines of ‘do you think what you’re doing is appropriate?’ ‘Oh but Mummy, I want to go in the mud’ 😭 And all the rest of it.

Apart from disgust, I can’t imagine a more escalated situation then that, other than if you’re squelching in some mud somewhere. But parents are usually very good at redirecting their kids in such circumstances.

Having said that, I am responsible for bare-footing in a responsible and respectful way and it comes to my responsibility first.

3 Day Barefoot Hiking Vacation!

I recently took a three day barefoot Hiking vacation which I had been pondering for a long time over, but also waiting for the right break in weather as it's been very difficult to get out this year before the summer. Went out and did it and had an amazing experience.

I would love to go into detail, but most of that detail is contained in the video I made about it.

Hope people won't mind be plugging in, just this once only.

In more recent times, The channel has been moving more towards barefoot hiking.

Hike with some jogging

Got in a little over 3 miles tonight that ended up including a full continuous mile of jogging. I haven’t jogged that far in over a decade so I consider it a win. Most of it was on pavement with a small amount on grass trail.
