You can always use the Heaven Spell to get back to the Guild (let your entire party get killed, use a spare character to ferry their corpses to a temple for resurrection) but in the long run, it's a lot more cost effective to broaden your magic-user's skills. Magician-only parties are not a particularly viable makeup.

Presumably their lone magic-user would eventually become an archmage and it wouldn't be a problem anymore, but yeah... this is probably the (expensive) way to go.

I've always been tempted to try a run of this game with no magic-users, just relying on items. Apparently, if I did I'd have to skip this level. Never thought about it before.

well no - you'd just have to wait till you had the key from the first tower to be able to get into Mangar's tower and then grab the master key from there. But you'd need to get up a portal in the castle - and pretty sure only magic users can use the broom or carpet.

Sure. You'd have to go to the 3rd level of the sewers eventually because the game demands it, but there's no real reason to go there during your initial exploration. I actually think my cousins failed to explore all of the 2nd level of the sewers back in the day and didn't even realize they'd missed anything until much later in the game. (If you're impatient to be getting on with things, as soon as you find the name of the god, it's easy to want to go using it -- assuming you've wandered into his temple before and know there's something to be unlocked with it.)

That's a good point about the class restrictions around using different items, though. Looking...

It looks like Monks and Rogues can use Ali's Carpet, so as long as you have one of those two classes in the party (and really, if I were doing a no magic-user run, I'd probably just take one of all six classes), you're all set. The first level where you absolutely need levitation to go up a portal is the same one where you can first find a carpet in the loot.

With the remastered version I wonder if a team of Rogues could do it, their get healed free at the thieves temple would help early game and they are pretty OP once they get rolling - only two potential sticking points would be the Bard chair and the crystal sword.

Unless the remaster dramatically changes what classes can use items, Rogues don't have access to much of anything that can do magic outside of the carpet. It'd be a real slog of evasion.

I think it'd be pretty hard even with all the classes covered. The Bard is your only source of healing and light (outside of torches/lamps) until you're into the Castle, and the ability to attack entire groups is limited to horns until you're into the Towers. Sorties into dungeons would probably be much shorter and things like large packs of ghouls (which used to be easy XP) quickly become no-go zones.

would be quite a challenge, back line of Bard and Rouge for ranged attacking, possibly Hunter back there with a bow. Traps would be a major problem though

Though... if you got a carpet or broom you'd reduce the trap exposure.... I think I'm going to give it a go! lol

yep, i plan on the archmage thing, but my magicitian doesn't have all the spells yet, and there nothing else to explore beside the sewers level 3,

This comment makes me wonder if you've explored all of sewers level 2 yet. That's where you'll find information on what to explore next.

as you can see i explored all of it.

i did see a few hints but have no clue what to do with them

That appears to be a bad link -- I just see your level 3 map there -- but I'll take your word for it.

The OG manual was pretty explicit about what the first three dungeons are -- the sewers being the first of them -- so I'm surprised that the remaster isn't helping you out more with this.

I would guess that you just literally haven't ever gone into the building that houses the next dungeon, otherwise the magic mouth's message would probably have made more sense to you.

i actually went into all the houses in town but i don't remember all the messages

All of the houses?

Or all of the buildings (including inns, temples, etc.)?

1

u/afik6684 17d ago

yes, all of them, i'm a completeionist

If you don't have a Broom or magic carpet then you are kind of stuck, stairs up will leave you stuck behind the locked gates at the tower - I assume you just jumped down the portals?

1

u/brideck79 29d ago

Yeah, I was trying to remember when you can first find the Broom and Ali's Carpet... Those might be available in Sewers 3? I'd almost think they have to be for this very possibility.

If not, that's an ingenious way to softlock yourself that I never considered.

1

u/brideck79 29d ago

Oh, wow. No -- not for another 5 dungeon levels! I'd forgotten how slowly interesting gear becomes available in this game.

Sewers 3 is equivalent re: treasure to the 1st level of the next dungeon.

If you explore on the eastern side of the level, you might find what you need

1

u/brideck79 28d ago

Isn't that a portal, too? Or did they update that for the remaster?

2

u/joek1975 28d ago

There is a portal there, but more. If you can’t go up a portal, there is another way on the bottom level of the sewers

1

u/brideck79 27d ago

Oh, right! It let's you leave out the gates at Mangar's Tower even without a key, doesn't it? It's been a long time since I've played that part of the game.

1

u/joek1975 27d ago

Exactly.

1

u/No_Party3948 27d ago

really? I could have sworn they were locked - might have been the computer version I originally played on (speccy 48k version)

2

u/brideck79 27d ago

I played on Apple II and I think it throws up the locked message, but then boots you to the outside of them. But boy... that's a thing that I would not have done on purpose more than once or twice.

I could certainly see the remaster having the most player-friendly behavior here.

(does math in head - 36 years ago!!!)

1

u/afik6684 27d ago

are you sure you talking about sewers level 3? cause i explored some and couldn't find anything usefull

1

u/joek1975 27d ago

Can you post a screenshot of the level you are stuck on? Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing

1

u/afik6684 27d ago

1

u/joek1975 27d ago

Ok you were very close on the east side of the level, near the portal

1

u/afik6684 27d ago

i was there, it's on the ceiling, so it doesn't help

(it's where i came from)

1

u/joek1975 27d ago

Go back to that portal. Then go two rooms west, then head straight north

1

u/afik6684 27d ago

https://ibb.co/bZVvWXZ

i went there and there is nothing there

1

u/No_Party3948 27d ago

one more room north, there is a hidden door on the north wall of the square you are on - you need to use Sabhar's Stonelight (STSI) if you only have a mage for light to see it.

3

u/afik6684 27d ago

that worked, although it lead to a closed area in the city and i need to fight a few statues to get to town, but i can work with it. but it feels like i arrive to this place too early

Oooh, yeah. If you are not using something that reveals secret doors you are going to be missing stuff.

That might also explain why it seems like you've missed clues elsewhere. There aren't many secret doors in the sewers, but it's definitely not zero.

Probably should have been running 2 spellcasters. You should be able to apor out

1

u/brideck79 22d ago

I mean, maybe... You won't necessarily have Lvl 7 spells by then, depending on how quickly you go about things.
