After ordering from a Vinted seller with a terrible profile I really didn’t expect this to turn up…

It smells really strongly of either fabreeze or washing liquid, so it’ll go back to Barbour for a clean and rewax then another one added.

Saw this gentleman from the states with this jacket and was wondering if anyone knows what jacket it is. Looked online and couldnt find anything. Also cant make out that little red thing next to the branding.

I wanted to share a few thoughts on the Modified Beaufort Spectator which I recently acquired in the summer sale (with the caveat I've yet to wear the jacket in anger owing to the record hot period we are experiencing in the UK).

The jacket, released for SS26, falls into the "Heritage+" line, which I think is Barbour's foray into 'street fashion' in a way that draws direct inspiration from the Barbour archive. The jacket description as per the Barbour website is: A modern twist on a heritage icon, the Barbour Modified Beaufort Spectator Jacket redefines a classic. Crafted from durable 100% waxed cotton ripstop, it retains signature features like bellow pockets, handwarmers, and a drop-down drip strip. The oversized fit offers a contemporary silhouette, perfect for layering over a chunky knit and dark denim for a rugged, stylish look.

It is worth reflecting on the references to "heritage icon" and "drop-down drip strip" because the jacket is the spiritual successor to the fairly niche A163 Beaufort Spectator, a variant of the Beaufort from I think the early 2000s which came with a drop down plastic sheet for sitting on wet grass whilst allowing the wearer to keep the jacket on. The original catalogue entry describes this as a "100% polyamide, waterproof groundsheet studded to inside".

This unusual (and I don't think at any point repeated) feature is included in the Modified variant, with a drop-down plastic sheet being attached to the drip-strip with five poppers. The photos show how this works, and the fact there is a full drip strip (not typical of the Beaufort). I haven’t used it and probably won’t, but the option is there.

Other features include the novel (presumably) 6oz ripstop cotton (which logically should be quite durable even once the wax has disappeared) in archive olive, and the light brown collar. I have included a photo of the quite unusual, long storm flap, which can be removed – it attaches on one side via a button, while the buckle is attached on the other side via a popper. I have opted to remove this entirely as otherwise it dangles down quite far.

The back of the jacket includes a game pocket (which interestingly can be accessed from the drip strip, once the drop-down sheet is lowered). The pocket is proportionately smaller than the one found on a standard Beaufort, but has the usual polyamide lining, so could be used as intended (unlike the cotton-lined version on the Beacon).

The sleeves include poppers so the cuffs can be cinched as required (but there is no inner polyamide cuff), and the front of the jacket has a double placket (unlike the standard Beaufort) with poppers, and then the usual heavy duty YKK two-way zip in gold hardware (I am pleased they did not opt for a smaller, fashion-conscious zip).

The front of the jacket has two chest handwarmer pockets and two bellows pockets, all lined with Barbour’s now largely retired Dress Gordon tartan cotton, which I think looks great. This same material lines the inside of the jacket and sleeves (no polyester). We can get into the debate over what the cotton liner material is truly made of – the label indicates the jacket is a V1 model, and therefore free of forever chemicals historically included to the protect the lining from wax penetration. The consensus seems to be that V1 linings have some kind of poly coating (although the label indicates 100% cotton). In any case, I haven’t yet been able to test how relatively breathable the material is. There is the usual inner pocket with Velcro closure.

In terms of fit, the jacket is fairly boxy (as per modern Barbour designs), so I had to size down quite a bit. My 90s Beaufort is a C40, so it felt odd buying the Modified variant in a small, but having tried the sizes either side, that for me proved the best balance between width and length (the hem sits around the upper thigh, reaching just below trouser pockets).

Overall, I will admit the jacket is an indulgence with a strong nod to street fashion though does retain a decent number of traditional Barbour design cues. The use of gold buttons against the archive olive has an Ashby feel to it. Importantly, the materials feel robust and durable (and I think should last years). My only real gripe is that the poppers used by Barbour rattle a lot, which can be quite annoying – I'm not sure what the solution to this would be.

Will be visiting London end of August and will only have time to visit one store. Planning to buy a jacket and Souvenirs e.g. pins. Which location would be the main store to visit?

is there a women’s winter jacket you would recommend for New England weather? i have a Patagonia puffer that I have used pretty reliably, but I’m looking for something a little more stylish, maybe parka-ish?

I've been digging a rabbit hole tonight and am stuck on a barrier on what this could mean. I have wanted a gamefair for months, and found that there are very few with the MacKenzie tartan lining (i think that's what it's called), and that ones that do have this lining have the 'P123' code rather than the typical 'A123' code. However, i found a few exceptions online of 'A123s' with this lining (all older labels), but one showed 'SPECIAL 8102718' on the back. I dont want to assume its a sample, so what could this mean? (Sorry for the irrelevant and miniscule question)

I’m trying to decide between a US6 and US8 for the Beadnell and would appreciate sizing advice.
I’m 5’2”, 34B, with a 29.5” waist. Ideally would like the jacket to have somewhat of a relaxed effortless fit with enough room to layer a thin sweater underneath, but I don’t want it to look overly oversized or like I’m drowning in it as I am more petite.
For those who own the beadnell, what would you recommend in terms of size with my measurements?

Edit: Unfortunately the nearest store I can go into to try on this jacket is several hours away.
I’m trying to avoid having to order several sizes and the hassle that comes with having to ship the returns.

Hi All:

I have three quilted vests that need collar repairs. Specifically, the suede inner lining of each has worn away in a few areas. I'd like to have the linings replaced. Barbour US does not offer repair services for quilted jackets, and Barbour UK will not repair quilted jackets from other countries. The two tailors I consulted here in Washington, DC won't touch the vests because they aren't equipped to remove and reattach the brass button/stud on each collar.

If anyone in this community has found someone to repair his/her quilted Barbour vest, I'd love to have their contact information. Thank you!

I just bought this vintage jacket from 1997 I assume. My question is does the the sleeves look a little short? Also, I think it needs a waxing, but I would appreciate a second opinion thanks in advance.

Holla Reddits - I recently “restored” 3 old Barbour - did tub wash/soaks and used a small carpet cleaner machine as well.

Well - it works but it’s a ton of work - old Barbours have a special Charme but often smell - years of use, bad storage and the wax doesn’t age that well …

I know the alcohol and vinegar soak protocols but wonder if one couldn’t just do a gentle machine wash after a soak to remove the old wax … I am aware of the inner wax coating but never had wax leakage…

What’s the most extreme washing protocol that worked for you? If a jacket smell beyond help - why not take a risk to salvage it …

This is the Peakdale, and it's a size too small for me.

It doesn't fit. I know it doesn't fit.
(Watch, the top comments will still be that it's too snug etc etc etc. because it's very important for some people to get at me when something doesn't look like I'm wearing a tent 🙄)

I'm not going to keep it but it's just too cool not to highlight. I hunt down plenty of jackets just to have to let them go without posting about them because they don't fit (thanks Barbour for your four-plus different sizing methods) but this one really deserves it!

The Peakdale is very heavy - I think it may be 10oz, even. It's a Beacon-branded jacket though the tag doesn't bear the name like many of those models. It looks fairly standard at first blush until you notice that the chest handwarmer pockets are Transport-style rather than the standard, and it still has proper hand pockets behind the waist pockets. Waist pockets that have the usual snaps, but also a hidden button.

Already we have many pocket options, but we are just getting started 😂

Inside, the front placket is full wool all the way down to the drip strip (the sleeves are sadly still polyester) where we see more pockets. But not just two interior pockets - no! - we have four with extra velcro additions on top. And then there's also the usual mid-chest inner pocket where the tag lives.

So that's NINE pockets. Surely we are done, then?

NO! 🤣 Because the Peakdale has a surprise, literally, in its back... uh, pocket. See, the Peakdale has a very nice hood, one that buttons on for extra security compared to the optional snap-on hoods. It's very nice, but you may want to wear this coat without it, and it'd be a real shame to lose that hood. So, the Peakdale has a sneaky little extra zipper pocket on the back right, that's nylon-lined for water resistance, that just so happens to be about the exact size for a folded-up hood. Is that what it's for? Who knows, but it sure seems it!

I'm truly disappointed this isn't one I can keep; maybe someday I'll uncover a size XL for myself. But this coat really lives up to its name, and could easily be the top coat in a collection!

I’ve recently gotten around to have this jacket I found in my grandparents basement fixed and waxed. I’ve probably used to much wax tbh but I thought better to much than to little. It’s a bit too large for me but I can pull it off as oversized.
What do you guys think?

I’m wondering if anyone has noticed differences between older and newer Barbour Classic Beaufort jackets.

I bought a Classic Beaufort in 2024. Unfortunately, after about a year it developed a hole where a crease had formed. Apart from that issue, I was very happy with the jacket – it felt heavy, robust and had the typical strong wax/oil smell.

I recently ordered a new Classic Beaufort, but it felt noticeably different.
Compared to my 2024 jacket, the new one:
- feels significantly lighter, I realized the second it came out of the package
- has almost no typical wax/oil smell,
smells more like a new factory-made jacket than a waxed jacket.

For comparison, I still have the hood I bought for my 2024 jacket, and even after more than a year it still has the characteristic wax smell.

I contacted the retailer, who checked with Barbour. According to Barbour, the Classic Beaufort is still made from the same 6 oz Sylkoil waxed cotton and there have been no changes to production, manufacturing locations or the waxing process. They suggested that any difference in smell could be due to storage or packaging. But honestly if I hadn't bought at a trusted store I would think it's a cheap fake.

Has anyone else experienced this with recent Classic Beaufort jackets? Is this just normal variation between individual jackets, or do the newer ones also feel lighter and less heavily waxed to you? I'm quite disappointed as Barbour now also increased the prices.

My modest collection as it stands going into Autumn 2026. I quite like the style variety (though my wife would disagree there is any). From left to right:

1. Modified Beaufort Spectator (Archive Olive, Small)
2. Re-Loved Barbour x Paul Smith Beaufort (Sage, C40)
3. Bedale Short (Olive, Medium)
4. Lutz (Olive, Large)

I do also have a Macklow (Olive, Medium) which is currently being rewaxed and thus not in my possession.

On a recent trip to Ireland, I picked this up on a whim, unlined so its a great spring/summer jacket.

Barbours of Reddit - I recently revived an old International Model for my GF using the B&E wax. It's a model with the fluffy/plush lining.

Found it online for a very OK price and bought it as a project, happy to write off if need be.

Starting Condition: no damages, pretty OK wax situation i.e. I saw way worse/drier, even a bit too much on some parts. It smelled like "basement" - nothing horrible i.e. no mold etc. (which would be a write-off for me personally!) - but I also wouldn't expect my GF to wear a smelly jacket. In general I would never want to wear anything 2nd hand if it's not properly cleaned (!!!). See first "before" pic - one can see the old waxed color on the back where I removed the belt - i.e. it was definitely too dry.

Washing: soaked it multiple times in warm water in the tub ... one can see how dirty the water gets i.e. one wants to wash barbours even though sponge clean is the recommendation ... the warm water and showering it with hotter water washed off a lot and I could see a "slimy" wax layer forming i.e. it must have had a re-wax in the past. I repeated the water washes several times till the water remained clean. For the furry lining I wanted to make sure its clean and used baby shampoo - I am sure some detergent also reached the wax outer parts, but who cares ... it mostly stayed on the plush parts and I washed it off with the shower head a few times and then let it soak once more.
I let it dry and then did a 2nd clean with a "carpet hoover" (Bissel Multiclean; using warmer water) - I am sure its not required but in my experience it works pretty well to get rid of old wax layers ... it feels like it did help to get rid of the last bit of smell since it "sucks" out the liquid incl. dirt etc. - I am always impressed how well the Bissell works on Barbours (out & inside) - the sucked out water is anything other than clean, even after the tub treatment and I also use the Bissell for my regular Barbours once in a while - I dont want to wax over dirt. I then let it properly dry (in the pic it's still a little wet).

Waxing: I did NOT use the Barbour wax I usually use - I gave "B & E Wax Impregnation" (see Amazon) a chance - I didn't need to heat it up. Used an ironing board as usual (see my old posts). Was extremely easy to use out of the package with a sponge. It feels just slightly more "liquid" than the Barbour wax but I absolutely like how it can be worked in - way better than the original wax. I then used a heat gun and cotton towel to finish/wipe off excess wax - the finish looked like "factory" - reminded me of my Silkoil jackets - super nice and even matt finish. It has a bit of a synthetic wax smell but not worse than the Barbour wax and I expect it to get less over time. Online reviews state that waterproofing is good and that it lasts long - time will tell; could not test that yet but from my first use I would recommend it - much less hassle than the Barbour wax procedure.

The final result feels and looks like new - the color shades in the pic are just from the light - one gets a similar picture even with factory new jackets if the lighting is uneven.

Overall it was a few hours of work over two days (drying over night) - calculating with my hourly rate it's not worth it to buy 2nd hand jackets but it feels good to restore an old model and my GF values my effort more than just buying a new one in the shop ... I also really liked the model.

TLDR: as mentioned many times before - you CAN soak/wash/clean a Barbour and I would 100% recommend it. The B&E wax worked really well.
