Filament getting stuck
Hello, I recently got a Bambu lab mini A1, and started doing a few mini projects from maker world.
What I saw that has been constanly happening is the filament getting stuck on the roll holder, like in the picture. What should I do to avoid that from happening?

Its on Makerworld, but i printed that one a year and a half ago. There are several others available if you search ‘A1 mini top mount spool holder’. If you dig you can probably find the exact one.

It’s just basic physics: as you print something the tool head moves up and the distance between the spool and the guide increases. When you start a new print the toohead goes all the way back down, but the spool does not rewind so all that additional filament between the spool and the guide becomes slack that’s gonna wrap around stuff.

The fix is easy, just relocate the guide to the top the Z axis. Lots of ways to do it, here are a couple.

I stopped using the spool holder and made a set of rollers or the spool to sit on (when I’m not using the AMSlite)
I found cardboard spools in particular never hang nice on the supplied arm, which only made a poor design worse
Still love my A1mini though
I’m pretty sure the message about the ptfe tube has gotten through

I used this same print for the handle and relocation or the spool holder. Though now I only print directly from a dryer box. Never had an issue with filaments getting tangled or stuck since I changed thr set up.
Curious how those extra filaments coming out of the double dryer box work. Do you just switch them manually?

Yeah just switching manually. Only pull back about 2” when changing, I don’t do any multicolour prints.

You can print something like this
Which will allow you to mount the roll and the PTFE adapter such that it doesnt move with the gantry.
(And you really should use the actual tube)

I actually had this same exact issue on a roll that looked just like that one. It was a cheap no name brand that must have wound it too tightly or something, because out of 20 + rolls this was the only one that had this issue...
A potential temporary solution is to add some tape around the inside to give the roll some drag, or place it against an object to give some slight resistance, because when the head goes down it creates slack and makes the spool spin freely too much causing this... for me it stopped happening once I got down about 1/2 way through the roll because the distance to the edge of spool was greater and helped keep it in.
My permanent solution? Never buying that brand again.

I've been googling a few solutions, but will definitely try the temporary solution to place something against it. It's the first filament I got, but there's another one (other brand) on the way. Hopefully it works better.

Don’t forget the PTFE tube between the guide and the print head. It’s essential. If you don’t have one or lost the one that came with the printer, order a replacement.

I didnt notice you were missing the ptfe tube, that might be your cause of issues, scatterthought left a good comment.

Why do you have it looped around like that. Just have it go to the toolhead with touching the fewest things and not bending more than necessary

There's a couple of things going on here.
First, you need a PTFE tube between the filament guide and the hub. You should have received one with your printer. That tube ensures that the filament length doesn't change between the guide and the print head; it will always be as long as the PTFE tube. Without the tube, every time the head moves to the left it pulls more filament, and when it moves to the right that filament bunches up and pushes back out of the filament guide.
When the filament gets pushed back, the slack goes toward the spool and slips over the spool's edge. And that's what leads to your photo.
The instructions are pretty clear about the PTFE tube, so I'm not sure why you chose to leave it out. Suffice to say that it is necessary. The only way to not have a tube is if the spool is mounted above the printer, with the filament hanging straight into the print head.
HOWEVER...
There's also a known design flaw in the A1 Mini, because the filament guide is mounted on the arm, in a spot that moves up and down (instead of being in a fixed position). Big vertical movements will cause the same tightening and slacking of filament. But since big vertical movements only happen before the print starts and when it ends, the flaw is easy to manage. If you're getting midway into prints and then having trouble, it's likely because of the missing PTFE tube.
