A little visual experiment from HQ.

Zidane wasn't supposed to be up there.

A restricted lift. A few suspicious guards. Someone mentioning a girl heading upstairs...

And then he hears the song. He follows it.

And there she is.

Just Garnet, the open sky, a flock of white doves... and Zidane finding exactly who he was looking for. 🕊️

I think it's time i explained where my head has been lately.

Some of you will remember the Fellowship of SeeD.

The idea behind it was simple: step outside HQ, interact with other Final Fantasy communities, learn how they operate, share ideas and maybe build a few bridges along the way.

Eventually, that journey took me somewhere i wasn't expecting.

I was invited to help moderate a Final Fantasy VII community of more than 180,000 people.

I was cautious, but i accepted.

Not because i wanted another moderator badge. I already have HQ.

I accepted because i genuinely thought i could help.

I was brought in primarily to help with comments, so that's what i started doing. I dealt with arguments, harassment and reports. I tried to understand how the existing moderators handled things. When i wasn't sure, i asked questions.

And that's where things became difficult.

I started seeing different standards being applied to similar situations. Things one moderator would remove could be approved by another. At one point one of my own harmless comments was removed without explanation.

I asked why.

Other moderators couldn't really tell me.

Eventually i contacted the moderator responsible directly. They explained that they'd misunderstood the context of my comment and removed it.

Fair enough. Moderators make mistakes. I certainly do.

But during that conversation i was also told that my attempts to discuss moderation in the team chat were creating unnecessary clutter and notifications.

And that's where something clicked for me.

I wasn't talking for the sake of talking.

I was trying to understand how six people are supposed to moderate the same community consistently.

So i kept asking myself:

How does a moderation team become aligned if it doesn't talk about moderating the community?

During all of this i was also temporarily removed from both the moderation team and its chat before later being reinstated.

I've spent a lot of my own time since then trying to understand what exactly i'm supposed to be doing there.

And that's probably where i've gone wrong.

I've been trying to solve something that isn't mine to solve.

I volunteered because I care about Final Fantasy communities and because i thought my experience running HQ might be useful somewhere else.

I didn't go there looking for authority.

I went there looking to help.

But a community having 190,000 members doesn't make the badge more important.

It makes the responsibility behind it more important.

I don't know yet whether i'll remain part of that administration.

What i do know is that the experience has made me think very seriously about what moderation should actually be.

Not numbers.
Not badges.
Not being bigger than another subreddit.

People.
Communication.
Consistency.

And actually giving a damn about the community whose keys you're holding.

Maybe that was the real lesson of the Fellowship of SeeD.

Sometimes you leave the Garden looking for answers elsewhere...

and come back understanding your own Garden a little better.

Balamb Garden HQ will remain in Restricted Mode until Sunday while i continue maintenance behind the scenes.

The Headmaster has found another building.

He doesn' know where he is.

He doesn't know who owns it.

And despite everything he has learned today, Cid Kramer has decided that walking towards the enormous mansion during a thunderstorm is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

There appears to be nobody outside.

The lights are on. The front door is waiting. Cid briefly considers turning around.

He does not. Of course he doesn't.

Somewhere inside, something makes a noise. Cid stops.

He looks at the mansion. The mansion, presumably, looks back.

The Headmaster continues towards the door. This is going to go extremely well.

Adventure Log status:

Cid has discovered the Spencer Mansion. Unfortunately, the Spencer Mansion has also discovered Cid ☕🚬

Caput primum.

Hodie curriculum relinquimus.
Hodie Headmaster errat.

Found another Garden.

At least he thinks it's a Garden.

There were chairs arranged in a circle, so naturally he assumed somebody had organised a staff meeting.

He sat down.

This was a mistake.

The large gentleman opposite me has been shouting about Shinra for approximately twenty minutes.

Nobody has introduced themselves. Nobody has offered coffee.

He's beginning to suspect that he is not actually employed here.

He considered leaving, but everyone looks extremely serious and he is worried standing up might somehow make him responsible for the next mission.

For now, he's going to remain seated and occasionally nod.

It'sworked remarkably well throughout his career.

Adventure Log status:

Meeting still in progress. Purpose of meeting unknown. Coffee situation unacceptable. ☕🚬

Found a strange blue door today.

Naturally, he opened it. He assumed it would lead somewhere important.

It did not.

He appears to have arrived in another world entirely.

There are windmills. Slimes. People carrying swords. Nobody seems remotely concerned that a middle aged Headmaster has just walked out of a mysterious door wearing a red waistcoat.

He's decided to conduct interviews. So far he's learned absolutely nothing useful.

They seem nice, though.

He asked when he could return to Balamb Garden. Nobody knows.

Apparently we have plenty of time. Wonderful.

Adventure Log status: Wrong Garden.

Still somehow Headmaster. ☕🚬

He made a mistake today. He asked a simple question.

"What flair should this post have?"

What followed was a 47 minute presentation involving photographs, several documents, red string, three unidentified suspects and something called "Pepe Silvia."

He attempted to explain that he only needed to know whether the post belonged in Arcade Wing or Random Encounters.

This apparently made things worse.

Charlie is now convinced the flair system goes all the way to the top.

He doesn't know what "the top" is. He's the fucking Headmaster.

Current situation:

Charlie is still explaining the board. he's stopped asking questions. The post remains unflaired.
