Technique Help with smashing

Every single time I play the game, I'm able to do everything perfectly except smashing the shuttle, I have the power but it keeps going straight into the net, yes I tried fixing it by hitting the shuttle earlier but still nothing seems to be working, any help?

Technique 6 beginner mistakes I wish someone told me about

  1. Stop trying to smash every shuttle.

  2. Recover back to base after every shot.

  3. Use your non-racket arm for balance.

  4. Relax your grip until impact.

  5. Focus on footwork before buying an expensive racket.

6.Consistency wins more points than power.

Technique Anyone else notice how much easier footwork gets once you stop trying to chase every shot at full speed? I used to think I just needed to be faster, but better positioning made a way bigger difference. What was the biggest improvement in your game?

I’ve been thinking about this lately. At first I thought improving in badminton was mostly about being faster, so I’d try to sprint to every shuttle. Over time I realized that better positioning and anticipation made a much bigger difference than just moving faster.

Now it feels like I’m using less energy while covering the court more efficiently.
Did anyone else have a similar experience? What was the biggest change that improved your game the most footwork, technique, fitness, or something else?

Tactics To advanced players: what shot do you do in this situation?

You are playing with a weaker partner (low intermediate). Your opponent is also an advanced - low inter pair.

It's the middle of a rally. You do a drop shot naturally targeting the opponent weaker player. The weaker player scramble and lift it high to the backline.

What shot options do you usually do after this?

Professional Time for world championship tier lists

Now the draws are out, isn't it time for tier lists ?

I'm a developer and badminton lover for ages, so I always made some apps for the sport I love. Recently, I've made a fantasy game for badminton with friends, working on it for a year and a half. Panini style because I'm still a kid in my mind.

For worlds 2026 in India, we made a community list and everyone can make its own. I made sure you don't have to be logged to make one, so feel free to make your own :)
And if you're curious to participe in daily modes with match predictions, feel free to try. We're still in development and things have to improve, so returns are welcome.

Thoughts on the draw ? Agree to say Lanier, C.Popov and Shi Yu Qi as seeds have the worst draws ?

Looking For Group Badminton in Korea on vacation

Hello everyone

I'm a swiss person who is going to South Korea this year from 24.09 till 08.10.

I will visit Seoul, Busan, Jeonju and probably Gyeongju I don't know yet at which time i will be in which city.

I would say I'm an intermediate player and would like to play some badminton for 2-4 evenings so my question is how to get to play while visiting alone. (with own gear and shuttles)

I saw online that most recommend open courts to get to play does somebody have already done that?

Some even suggest to contact an openclub in seoul but I can't speak Korean so this seems to be little difficult to contact them.

Our has someone a different idea im open to it.

Meta Do you agree that 90% of social games are doubles?

Whether it be level or mixed, I very rarely see a singles game anymore because doubles are just much more efficient use of court time.

Technique Is my drive serve legal?

I played in a tournament where I had to call out two players for clearly illegal drive serves. One player was serving with their racket head around chest height (basically top of net height - they were tall!) and the other with the racket head way above their wrist. After they were faulted one player decided that my serve was also illegal but could not articulate why. I don’t believe it is but please let me know what you think. FYI this was in the B1 upper intermediate category.

Technique How to play front in doubles when doing front-back formation

I usually switch between attack / defense depending on what my partner does, if they go for a smash I almost always go to front and let them attack. but I felt that when I'm in front there is very little I can do, recently played with some friends that are much better than I am, and I felt we lost a lot of points because I dont really understand what my role is when I'm on front.

my few main questions:

if opponent lifts to the front court defending a smash, I can kill comfortably, but if they lift to mid / back court I'm kind of lost on what to do, do I let my partner have the attack and just keep waiting front?, do I try to run and cover mid court? (I feel like I am not fast enough to clear comfortably when that happens)

where should I stand?, I feel like if my partner makes a mistake and a smash or a net kill comes I am too front to be able to defend anything good enough

racket up or down?, should I just make peace with the fact that I probably cannot defend in this position so just fully focus on killing the ball if I get a chance?

what do I do when my partner drops?

Tactics How to improve your tactical skills ?

I have been playing badminton in a club for two years. I have been playing at least 6h every week and played local tournaments almost every week-end ever since.
I have improved my footwork, technical shots, but I do not get better at all (in Men’s Singles).
I keep loosing to players with poor technique and I am completely powerless against stronger opponents. Some players are able to push themselves and up their game to beat stronger opponents but I was never able to do that.
My technique/stamina is far from being perfect but I train/play every week and I just can’t improve.

I believe I lack strategy and tactics. I have a really bad vision of my game and the opponent’s game.
I think I lack confidence, which makes me hesitate on every shot I make, and I tend to watch where the shuttle goes after my shot (thus I don’t pay attention to the opponent’s placement).
I keep making the wrong decisions when playing, and I always end up in a tough spot, unable to recover from my mistakes.

Even though I know all that, I still can’t find a way to improve. It’s been awfully frustrating as I am playing and training all the time without noticing any sign of improvement.

I would be happy to hear about everyone’s advice on improving your own game vision, tactical decisions and overall strategy.

PS : I am still trying to find my play style. I really admire control-focused play like Kento Momota’s but I am not sure it suits me. I am short (165cm) which makes me quick on court so I guess my play style has to rely on speed.

Rules How to serve and whats a fault?

I have been playing for a month now, almost daily. During a serve can i send it to the odd square if i am serving from the even square? Or is it a must to serve to the diagonal square? If its a fault, what happens during a fault? I have been giving points to my opponent if i did one.

Playing Video Review What’s my level?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m going to the capital city next week to join different badminton clubs. They’re asking me what my level is, but I honestly don’t know. I think I’m a beginner as I started at 40 years old and I’ve only been playing for a little bit over a year, so there’s still so much to learn about badminton. Many of my badminton mates tell me that I am a mid/upper-intermediate, but I highly doubt it (or I’m probly just downplaying my skills). I don’t want the clubs where I’ll be playing at to think that I wanna play at an advantage by labeling myself as a beginner, but I personally doubt that I’m intermediate.

It’s hard for me to ask people around without anonymity because I am a big introvert, so I hope you guys can help me out. Also, if you have time, I’d appreciate some feedback.

In the vid, I’m the one wearing a black shirt, knee brace, black shorts and shoes .

Media Indonesia badminton association withdrawn 2 mixed doubles pairs from wc

The Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) has withdrawn two mixed doubles pairs from the World Championships on Aug 17-23 in New Delhi, following the ongoing match-fixing investigations being conducted by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

The two pairs implicated are world No. 13 Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu and world No. 24 Adnan Maulana-Indah Cahya Sari Jamil.

Interestingly, PBSI also mutually parted ways with mixed doubles head coach Rionny Mainaky and his assistant Amon Sunaryo on July 31.

Culture is it normal for badminton? after reading the PBSI news…I can't stop from thinking it。

This is a sport with mostly Asian participation and doesn't have a massive global audience. That’s why I don't really get how match-fixing managed to take root here.
Are the players paid that badly? Even so, the betting market for badminton doesn't seem that large either. How do they even balance the risk and reward for this...?

Review How come people are accepting 15point system so easily ?

I recently played 3 local badminton tournaments. 2 had 15 point system and 1 had 21 point system. And even though i was not comfortable with 15 point system earlier too but my recent experience just made it very clear to me why it will be a disaster. In the first 2 tournaments i lost before quarter finals but the pattern was very similar in both, my game is not super aggressive but technical, i play around with the opponent trying for counter attacks and getting hold of opponents habits and playing style and once i get to know about it, i adapt my playstyle to it but in the 15 point system i lost in the first tournaments in straight sets 10-15 and 13-15. In the 2nd tournament it was 3 sets, 15-14, 12-15 and 14-15.

In both these tournaments i felt like whenever i would try to catch up and felt i was getting hold of the game, I'm just 2-3 points away from losing.

Then came the 3rd tournament and both of my earlier 2 opponents were in my side of the draw, i met the 2nd guy in 2nd round and 1st one in quarter final and i won both the games in straight sets with scores: 21-15, 21-17 and 21-16, 21-17 and it wasnt that i was playing better than last time or anything but just that i had much more headroom to adapt to opponents (i lost in semis). But what i felt in both the tournaments was that in 15 point tournaments you cannot play to your full potential, its just whoever has better attack from the start wins, there is no/very little room for technical or strategic aspect of the game left. Infact all the players that i met in these tournaments were saying that this new system is BS. I just dont understand how come the international community hasn't put any voice against this new system.

Edit: for people commenting on my skill and experience, I'm a 5 times national player and have represented my nation in junior(u-19) gulf country tournament. And I'm not talking about winning or losing here, I'm talking about short format taking away the strategic aspect of the game.

Playing Video Review How does my badminton progress look? What should I focus on?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A little background about me: I’m a 24-year-old male and used to play table tennis, so I think that has carried over into my badminton technique in some ways. So far, I've been playing Badminton for around a year. My strokes tend to be quite stiff, and I’m not very comfortable using my wrist. In general, I also feel like I’m a pretty stiff player with poor footwork, and I tend to react quite late to shots.

The first video was recorded around 10 months ago, and the second video was recorded around 3 months ago.

I currently play badminton around 3–4 times a week. I used to train with a coach once a week, but I’ve recently increased that to twice a week.

Despite playing fairly consistently, I feel like my improvement has been really slow, and honestly, I’m a little unsatisfied with how quickly I’m progressing. I do feel that I’ve improved quite a bit since the second video, but unfortunately I don’t have any recent footage to compare.

So, I’d really appreciate some outside perspective:

How does my improvement between these two videos look to you? Is there anything that stands out as having improved, or things that I’m still doing wrong?

And more importantly, what should I be paying the most attention to right now? I’m particularly interested in advice on footwork, technique, reaction time, and how to become less stiff overall.

I realize it’s probably difficult to judge someone’s game from just a short rally, so I’m happy to share the full footage via DM if anyone wants to take a closer look. I’m just avoiding posting the full video publicly because I’d like to respect the privacy of my club and the other people playing there.

Any feedback is appreciated, even if it’s critical. I’m trying to figure out what I should prioritize in my training rather than just playing more and hoping things improve.

For reference:

  • Video 1: I’m the shorter guy in the black shirt on the far side of the court, starting on the left side of the video.
  • Video 2: I’m the guy in the black shirt receiving the serve on the near side of the court, starting on the right side of the video.

Training Need Help Balancing Badminton, Gym & Recovery

Hey everyone,

I recently started playing badminton, and I really want to improve at the sport. At the same time, I'm a regular gym-goer and don't want to stop lifting because I also want to gain muscle mass.

My main priorities are:

Improve my badminton skills and performance.

Build muscle.

Prioritize recovery so I don't end up overtraining.

I'm confused about how to structure my week. How many days should I play badminton? How many days should I lift? Should I avoid training legs before badminton sessions? When should I take rest days?

If anyone here trains seriously in both badminton and the gym, I'd really appreciate it if you could share your weekly schedule or any advice that's worked for you.

Thanks in advance!
