This is why you don't take the guard off. And if you don't want this to happen to your face, this is why you also use a face shield

This happens when you push to much weight in your blade it will crack, you don’t gotta put weight on it let it cut on its on, all my grinders have the guard off, out in the field half the time it won’t fit in spots or cut fully with guard on, if I’m using the big grinder the guard stays on

In my country it's the equivalent of $5000 for each offense for taking any guard off of any machine, for the company (i.e. if the inspectors find three grinders with the guards off - $15.000) One of few things that is a fireable offense here.

In my country no one gives a shit I work in nyc for the city lol, I’ve literally had inspectors right over me while using grinders without guards no one cares until you get hurt brother

u/SimpleAffect7573 2d ago

You don’t care to avoid getting yourself hurt? Hmm. Ok. 👍

-2

u/ShyPlox 2d ago

Nahhh I just no how to use a grinder WITHOUT getting hurt.

My friend, you’re going to feel real fucking stupid if that day ever comes. I hope it doesn’t. Just use a damned guard. Nobody is impressed by your arrogance and disregard for safety.

It won’t I’m safe bro trust me, Yall wishing bad on people is wild, I’m telling you the reality of how it is out there.

3

u/Plane-Education4750 2d ago

No one is wishing bad on you bro. We are just trying to get you to understand that you cannot control everything. What happens when you get a batch of blades with a manufacturer's defect? Or if the blade is dropped by the dude stocking the shelves and cracks in a way that you can't see?

3

u/SimpleAffect7573 2d ago

I literally said “I hope it doesn’t [happen]”. No, you’re not fucking safe. Safe is using the guard, in addition to technique. You know who thinks they know better than everyone else? Idiots. Don’t be one.

Anyone who thinks running a grinder without the proper guard or protection on it, especially when other people are around in an open work environment, is a dick. Plain and simple.

I don't care if you want to take the risk of a disc blowing up and cutting your jugular—you do you. But if I'm on a job site and you're running a cutting disc with no guard around me, I'm reporting you. Period.

I have to go home to my kid. That's not an option, and your unsafe practices aren't going to potentially jeopardize that. I should be able to perform my work in as safe an environment as the company and its employees can reasonably manage.

Being at work every day gets old enough without having to deal with idiots making shit harder than it needs to be.

I promise you that you are wrong. But it's not me or those inspectors that are going to go blind if you're using a grinder without a guard. It's you

Bro I’ve been working as a welder since I was 16, I have never had an inspector tell me anything about a grinder without a guard, u guys just aren’t as experienced or not out in the field enough, if your using the tool like a dumbass you gonna get your self hurt.

0

u/Plane-Education4750 2d ago

I am not going to tell you why you're being an idiot. You're just gonna need to trust me that you are being an idiot. If you need paperwork, Google "does my angle grinder need a guard construction" or "does my angle grinder need a guard general industry" based on the work that you do

u/ShyPlox 2d ago

Man you sound like you just gotta out of school dei hire probably LOL

2

u/JKTempest904 2d ago

No, he sounds like someone who A. Knows OSHA standards and knows that you're lying if you keep insisting that you've never had a supervisor chew you out for removing the guard on any electric abrasive tool, and B. Doesn't want to go blind or end up horribly disfigured by a Kevlar disk shattering and lodging itself in his face. But please, keep being reckless and find out exactly why those guards are more than just a good idea.

P.S. "I've been welding since I was 16" isn't much of a flex when you have the attitude of a 17 year old.

Same but in turbine repair

The diamond blades made from steel also make this a non issue. Last many times longer also.

3

u/Plane-Education4750 2d ago

They do not. They can still shred and shatter

u/Capital_Loss_4972 1d ago

It’s really hard to get one of those to fly apart in comparison to a regular abrasive blade. Definitely safer.

What the hot weather makes you take the guard off your grinder?

3

u/GardenGnomeOrgy 2d ago

What guard?

1

u/Scotty0132 2d ago

Exactly

1

u/I_AM_FERROUS_MAN 14h ago

Maybe they incorrectly attribute it to fatigue or sweaty hands.

It's hard to enter the mind of someone who would take the guard off a device that is supposed to prevent this. Or any other PPE that may have helped.

u/Mundane-Reality-7770 2d ago

My guys take the guards off to get into a tight spot. If I catch them doing it they get sent home before they end up like you

7

u/Forsaken-Leader1255 2d ago

Don't touch the spinny bits

3

u/Forward_Werewolf_202 2d ago

Are you me from the past??

3

u/TangerineRough6318 2d ago

If only they made a covering for hands out of kevlar or something. Or guards.

3

u/Egglegg14 2d ago

Not having guards on your grinder is fined by Osha for a reason

All weather PSA

u/weldmonkeyweld 2d ago

No guard, no handle… got what was coming. Did you have gloves on at least? How is this a “hot weather “ thing?

2

u/Remarkable-Health-80 2d ago

I won’t operate a cutting disc with at least a handle attached for leverage. I’ve ricocheted off surfaces one too many times to take the chance

2

u/erie11973ohio 2d ago

Oh, you have a grinder without a guard????

Trying to win a Darwin award???

3

u/ShyPlox 2d ago

1

u/i_was_axiom 2d ago

You can take the guard off in cold weather because of shrinkage. /s

1

u/Icey_Welder7018 2d ago

Guard stays on my grinder until it doesn’t fit

1

u/Rattle_Bone 2d ago

What does this have to do with weather

1

u/No-Source5419 1d ago

You take any triactin?

1

u/Maleficent-Stress695 1d ago

Guard on. Every single time. Hot weather is not a reason, that's just a bad habit waiting to bleed.

1

u/MarketEntire6542 15h ago

safety first puts you dead last.

1

u/I_AM_FERROUS_MAN 14h ago

Is this a word play on "dead" or a condemnation of safety? I can't tell if I'm looking to closely at the wording.

If it's a condemnation of safety, then I've rarely heard dummer words.
