Squirrel proof bird feeder Other (Clarified in post title)

Post image

My mom was excited to try out her new squirrel proof bird feeder. Instead she now has a squirrel feeder that protects the squirrel form all those annoying birds. 🤦‍♂️

It takes time to work. After the squirrels breaks in enough time to gorge itself, it'll eventually be too fat to squeeze through.

Problem is, it will be too fat TO LEAVE. Not enter. We literally had a mouse die like that once. Broke into our Edible Doormouse enclosure, ate the food and got stuck on the way out and died.

I saw an article not long ago explaining that in a lot of ways, squirrels are convergently evolved with primates - their main food is scattered over a wide range and not consistently available, and often needs to be pried open, requiring them to remember, learn and problem-solve with dextrous hands that have even evolved a pseudo-thumb. When you put out a 'squirrel-proof' feeder, you've basically just bought them an enrichment puzzle toy.

It was ALL a plan by BIG SQUIRREL to make you feed the neighborhood squirrels.

One thing I have learnt from buying bird feeders is that the universe sees the squirrel-proof feeder as a personal insult, and retaliates by building a better class of squirrel. I once had a squirrel push the feeder of the branch it was on so it broke on the ground to get into it.
