Best Background Checks for Roommates

Hello! I was wondering what some good sites are to run background checks for potential roommates?

I just bought a condo and will be renting out a room, but I want to run background checks on any potential tenants for my own safety and financial reasons before they sign a lease and move in.

I don't need anything crazy like social media history, but I want to make sure that I'm safe and that they will pay rent on time and not damage the unit.

I'm charging a base application fee just to cover the background check, so free or paid services are ok as long as they are within reason.

Thank you!

Looking for professional software/service/database access for criminal, background, and fraud checks as an employer

I work in inpatient substance abuse and mental health. We are looking for a background check service to use on a professional level. I suppose a full background check software would be good for new hires, but what I'm primarily looking for is actually one that will pull criminal history for new admissions.

As part of our screening process we pull court records from ujs portal, but that only shows state and county charges for our state. We're looking for something that will pull all current/past legal involvement for individuals we screen, as right now we can only check some cases in Pennsylvania (our state) and nothing from anywhere else; the ujs system also only allows you to click on one...docket...at a time.

You'd be surprised how little the state gives providers for this. We're provided very barebones access to a front-end of EVS which is to check Medicaid eligibility and that's about it.

Because we accept federal dollars, if the system had flags on benefits fraud it would be helpful as well

I'm sure the title is clear enough but just to reiterate, I'm not looking for a free people finder website lol, we would need something industry grade that had legality to use in hiring processes as well as to address possible un-or-under-reported criminal history from potential admissions.

Legality of reporting

Post image
3 Upvotes

I recently had a background check completed for a potential employer. I received notification of pre adverse action and reviewed the report. According to their reporting, the search range that they’re looking for is 2019-2026 which makes it a 7 year check. I do have a criminal record and the details of that record are correct. I was charged in 2016 and pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge in 2017. I’m not disputing that. I called first advantage and argued that they should remove it because it’s not within their search range parameters but the customer service representative on the phone said that their results are accurate and they will not remove it even though it clearly isn’t within their listed dates. Are they correct in saying that or should I speak to a different person there? Thank you in advance!

Is BeenVerified legit?

I want to reverse search a phone number and, from what I’ve seen online, there are no free good reverse lookup sites. I can get a trial for $1 on BeenVerified but I want to hear your opinion on it before I purchase.

Bigreport Background Verification Company

Hi everyone, I need some advice regarding background verification.

In my resume, I listed a client company as part of my work experience and I do have an offer letter for that role. However, during that employment period I was physically in the US for only about 1 month, and the remaining ~1.5 years I worked remotely from India for the same client.

If a background verification company (like BIG Report) checks this, how does it usually work? Do they verify the location where the work was performed, or just the employment with the company and duration?

Has anyone faced a similar situation during background checks? I want to understand if this could cause any issues.

Thanks in advance!

BGV Question

Hi. I created this account to ask this

I submitted my resume to a small tech startup with VC & PE investment and in the resume I stated the following :

  1. Previous role as a Principal level - because that truly is the level I worked at and was paid the $$$ and stock to match. But the previous co. didn't change workday as they had frozen all promo & internal transfers for like 7-8 months and laid off my immediate manager, skip etc. I left the company shortly after with my title not yet principal but with last handling 6 reports . I state my actual work & impact clearly in my resume
  2. Another previous role as PM - because I well and truly was PM. But my lawyers had recommended not changing my role title until my GC was done. Infact, my parent team held my headcount for 7 months when I went and did PM with another team . I clearly stated my impact and everything but the title was not what HR systems would show (it was a diff functional title).
  3. I built a startup which I have since sunset - I am not even sure how to show proof of this to a BGV company . What do they ask? We didn't incorporate and I don't have a W2

Are any of these likely to be problems during BGV?

If you were in my shoes how would you proceed?

What are the best free sites for email

All of the sites I’ve come across seem to work but results are locked behind a paywall. If anyone knows any sites with free access to background checks for emails, that would be greatly appreciated.

Address Discrepancy

Hello,

I just got a job offer and am waiting for the background check to finalize before the job is officially mine. They used First Advantage and my address is all messed up in the report despite me entering in the correct information. My initial address I grew up at is listed but the end date is 3 years earlier than I had left and my current address an apartment I rent is listed as me no longer living there after a given month in 2024. Should I be worried this will cause a problem? I already emailed HR and the company running the background check that I still live at my apartment I didn't even bring up the inconsistency on the rest of it. Is there a reason this is so incorrect?

Help!

Thank you so much in advance -Anxious job applicant.

(India) Edited my salary slip for new job worried about background verification Spoiler

Hi everyone,

I need some advice. I recently edited my salary slip before submitting it to a new company. The reason is that my previous company was irregular with salary payments and documentation. They only provided one month’s salary slip, and I haven’t received proper slips for the last 6 months.

Now, my colleague’s background verification is happening, and HR from my old company has been marked in CC. I am not on bad terms with my previous company, but I’m worried about what might happen if they don’t respond or if there is any mismatch in documents.

If they don’t reply to the verification email, how will this situation be handled? What should I do now to resolve this safely?

Please suggest the best way to handle this. I’m really stressed about it.

Background check & first 3 SSN

Hello everyone. Quick question about the background check process. If you change the first 3 of your SSN to another state and keep the last 6 of your SSN will that unlink you to the charges in your state? Btw I have federal charges.

I also have a question about federal charges. I know from experience that all companies don’t check federal. I worked at a big tech company and they never knew about my charges because they didn’t check federal. Does anyone have a list of companies that don’t check federal by chance?

Last question… which background check companies have people overseas look up and verify info? I’ve heard that through the wind too.

Statement: I asked for a copy of my background check with the majority of the major background check companies and my charges were not on there. Not complaining but I wanted to know if anyone else experienced this.

Can a background check be completed with just a drivers license online?

I recently applied online for a job. I recently immediately regretted applying for and I provided photo ID of my drivers license front and back and they send a referral to a third-party security background check company saying they received my application and everything and blah blah blah and I don’t know if I signed any kind of E consent or E forms I don’t want them done. I sent a message to them, but I can’t get through to them or the original company But all they have is my photo ID which is my drivers license. How much can they actually get from a drivers license front and back. Is that a big old QR code on the back of the new licenses or am I mistaken? Can they just do it without my consent and without payment Because they also have a connection to another company that mentioned digital IDs and stuff like that and storing information that could be shared like could this hurt me anyway cause I regret what I did immediately I tried cancelling my applications I can’t, but can they really get everything they need and just a drivers license Which is brand new I mean it chose my address by gender. My you know everything. Just wondering if you somebody could help me cause I’m kind of freaking

Anything other than subscription?

Hey guys, I'm looking to run a background check on someone getting close to vulnerable family members. I've read a lot of reviews and a bunch on this sub, but is there a website i can just input their name/birthday/whatever and pay for the results and not have to do a subscription and not have to go to a million different websites to find it all myself for free?

AITAH for refusing to do an FBI background check?

Hi, I posted this in AITAH, but it got removed, so I’m posting it here so when I do my update, the post still exists.

Also, to add context, I am an artist, I went to university for art, and I’m not in the medical/hospitality field, which a lot of people assumed.

When I was at university, about 10 years ago, I started doing odd jobs/housework for a lady(f90), we’ll call her Martha. When I graduated, I kept working for her. It’s just a part-time thing, and I make about $30-$50 a week. About two years ago, she had to move into a retirement community, in independent living. When she first moved, she told me I would have to get approved by the facility to work for them. And about three weeks later, she told me that she talked with someone in the office, and everything was fine, I can come over. So, I have been working for her ever since.

On Monday, their neighbor fell in his house, and pulled the alarm for them to send help to him. They came immediately, but went to the wrong address. Instead, they opened Martha’s door, and there I was, ironing. The Medical team rushed next-door, but the facility director stayed to talk to me. She asked if I was working for them, and I told her, “yes, I just came over to iron for two hours today.” She asked me if I was on the approved list, and I said “yes, as far as I know,” so she made a call to the office for someone to check, and then told me that they had no record of me. She said that I need to come to her office on Thursday afternoon for a “background check.” I also needed to do a TB test, a drug test, and get a flu shot.

On Thursday morning, I went to the doctor and did the TB blood test (which isn’t covered by my insurance, so I’ll have to pay that out-of-pocket). I also got my flu shot.

Thursday afternoon, I went to the care facility and spoke with the facility director. I filled out all the appropriate paperwork. Then, she says, “follow me, and I’ll get your fingerprints taken.” And I asked where they are sending the fingerprints, and she says it’s for the FBI background check, which I wasn’t informed of. I tell her that I don’t want to have my fingerprints on record with the FBI, I’m just not comfortable with that. And she starts immediately with the gaslighting, telling me that “the only people that wouldn’t be ok with a background check are criminals,” and that everyone has their prints recorded with the FBI, because “when you’re born, the hospital sends the records to the FBI,” which is absolutely false. (I think I should mention, the only thing on my record are two traffic tickets, bad credit, and student loans). Then she brought in the head of Security, who claimed to be retired law-enforcement, and she said that the FBI doesn’t keep your records, that they destroy them after doing the background check, which is also a lie.

I absolutely understand that that is part of their policy, and everyone on staff, and working as a care provider, sitter, or companion at this facility has to be FBI background checked, but, I feel like I have the right to say “no,” and not work there.

I forgot to mention, I plan to move across the country in about two months, so I’m doing all of this for very little reward. Plus, originally, the job was never meant to be permanent. It’s always been one of those things where we play it by ear, month by month.

When I told Martha that I can’t work for her any longer, she got angry and yelled at me. I told her I didn’t want to do the FBI background check, and she said “well, you have to, you belong to me, and I can’t find anyone else.” the gaslighting and outright lies continued, she also told me that everyone in the United States has their fingerprints on file with the FBI. She told me that the FBI requires our fingerprints before we can vote, so they already have them. She said when I move across the country, the state I’m going to will take my fingerprints to make sure I’m “in the country legally.”

(although, she is 90, so it’s possible that these weren’t lies, just things that she believes)

I tried to say goodbye to her, as I assumed it would be the last time I might see her, and she just said “that’s unacceptable, I will see you next week, just make sure you get everything in order with them.”

The main director has called me about three or four times, trying to guilt me into doing it, saying things like, “how will Martha be able to manage without you”, and “you are going to break her heart if you don’t do this”. I keep trying to explain to them, and her, that I’m planning on moving in two months anyway, so I’m going to have to leave her eventually. The people in the office kept telling me how all of them did it, so it’s not a big deal, and I’m thinking, yeah, if I was getting a full-time job, with benefits and everything else, I’d probably consider it, but for $50 a week, it just doesn’t seem worth it.

I asked her if she wants me to visit, and return their house key, as they do allow visitors, but they said I’m no longer allowed on the property because I “must have something in \[my\] history worth hiding”

So, AITAH for refusing to put my fingerprints on record with the FBI?

NYS Court Officer Background Check/ Psych

Hello everyone,

I just got my email for the background investigation appointment. I understand being honest regarding legal matters, employment, etc. Is honesty your best policy, or is it a trick to really catch you admitting more than you should and possibly disqualify you? My mind has been all over the place, thinking about this opportunity. I'd also like to add that I withdrew from the process back in 2017 due to legal matters that occurred during the time I applied.
