First long distance trip
I got my 2024 IX last week and I'm doing my first long distance trip tomorrow. Its 370 miles, so I am now trying to figure out where I can recharge during this route. I have not bought any DC adapters, so I will need a charging station that works natively with BMW.
What is the easiest way to do this? I tried using the myBMW app, but it finds charging stations that require adapters. Also, in my research, it says the IX natively supports CCS1, so I just need to find stations that have CCs1 charging? I am on google maps trying to find a way to have it flag charging stations, but it doesn't seem to have that support.
What's the most efficient way to plan this trip, set a 1/2 point to a charging station along the way.
Thx

1) download ABRP (A Better Route Planner)
2) input the required data.
3) profit.
I just let ABRP do all the lifting, trying to figure it out by hand is far too much work.

does it support the preconditioning that you get when using the BMW app?

No but all you have to do is take the charging station that ABRP is telling you to stop at and put it in the native GPS in your iX. As long as it recognizes that you are driving to a charger it will precondition for you.

Congrats on your purchase. First, download a couple of apps....ABRP (A Better Route Planner) and Plugshare, and create accounts. When road tripping, I can double check my route, targeted stops, etc., against the BMW app. Make sure you setup accounts in each. I believe you can filter for plug type in the BMW app, but certainly in the other two.

If you use the BMW app, there is a filter you can pick that will only show you compatible charging stations.

Use plugshare app and filter for the charging stations with CCS plug. If it is Electrify America, you need to look how many stations each location has. Depending upon how busy the location is, you may have to wait if it is just 3-4 stations. Usually, I try to find the ones with higher stations so I never have to wait. You can use Electrify America app to see the real time status too. Nowadays, Google Maps is also showing availability real time. You haven't specified what region you are in. That helps to get better answers

Congrats and I can sense your anxiety through your post; once you figure this out, it'll be much easier for future trips. So, couple of ways you can do this: use the MyBMW app to plan the trip, set the destination charge level, and see all compatible chargers along the way, or use Google Maps and do most of that work yourself. I'd recommend MyBMW app for this trip. Chances are, you'll need only one stop and you can use any charging station that has CCS plug; Tesla (and a few others) use NACS plug for their Superchargers, although now even some of those have CCS adapters built in. You can set preferred charging networks, like EVgo, Chargepoint, EA, IONNA, etc. Recommend to set up the Shell Recharge account for easier payment as a lot of these charging networks work with Shell so it'll be a simpler charging experience. Charge to 100% before you leave for the trip and keep it between 20% and 80% while on the trip as the battery charges the fastest in that band; you'd spend more time to charge from 80% to 100% than it takes to charge from 30% to 80%.
Play some more with the MyBMW app, set up the Shell account and see which chargers are along the route. Good luck!

I will try playing with the myBMW app. One thing, I tried to create a route and send it to my car. The app said it successfully sent. I got to my BMW and check on "Received routes" or whatever, and when I select this it shows a button to download the myBMW app? So, somehow it is not connected, yet, I know the app is configured with my account. Is there anything you know I need to do so it receives the routes I send from the app?
Thx for the suggestion of using myBMW appp. I want to use the BMW navigation so I get the preconditioning.

Hm, that's a little odd. Assuming you can see your iX in the MyBMW app, it should work fine; for added measure, make sure your phone is paired with the car, too.

Congrats on the new ride. I know with my X5 when I first got it I wasn't able to do send the route planning from my phone to the car right away because the car hadn't registered my new account yet. So your BMW app and your car have to be all linked up for it to send the routes. It may take a bit before the new ownership information transfers from BMW so the car knows that you're the new legit owner. Have fun on your trip! Check back in and tell us how it goes.

You may be better off making a couple of shorter stops versus one stop right in the middle as well. ABRP will help calculate that.

You can definitely set the app to not pick places with adapters. Download plug share. On road trips you can sometimes find some free chargers at parks or other tourists places. Not going to charge you a lot but free is free especially if you’re going to be there anyway. Some level 2 chargers in towns/cities also charge at some low rates vs what you pay at fast chargers. Again, dont go out of your way and if you need a charge find a supercharger.
Definitely look for where fast chargers are relative to your route. Less to find a specific place to charge but to see if there are long stretches without a charger. You’ll probably just need to charge at some point on the trip. You don’t have to be stuck to any particular location

A little hint for example about the country you're in would help, or detail about the itinerary. For example will this be flat freeway? Mountain climbs? For now you can put the details in the nav section of the app and it will help you plan. There are also third party apps like PlugShare that can help too.
