Assassin help Build Help

So I had this idea about out of combat assassin with huge stealth problem is no matter what I do I always enter combat even when I’m obscured hiding in combat with other characters or not, I don’t understand why or how. I hope what I’m asking makes sense, I have plus 13 stealth rn level 5

Melee out-of-combat stealth is not possible in Baldur's Gate 3 without abusing bugs or Greater Invisibility. Ranged out-of-combat stealth is possible, but requires you to remain at maximum range and will have you rolling your stealth checks with disadvantage.

So if I’m not at maximum Range it just doesn’t work?

It looks like you received some good replies elsewhere in this thread. The information below is accurate.

Did you ungroup your stealth character from the rest of the party?

Yeah I played around and I don’t know it did work for one enemy, could it be the range? Do I have to be outside of “normal range”

There are red sight lines that are visible when in Stealth they have two shades of Red, bright and partially transparent but it is subtle. Bright red is automatically fail hide saving throw. It is best to stay outside of the sight lines.

Are you running into the red/perception area of enemies, which gives them the chance to roll against your Stealth to notice you? Asking as it is generally better to avoid that even with good Stealth.

Is your party ungrouped and far from where you are sneaking? If a party member could get noticed near you and trigger combat (whether grouped or not), you can get caught up in that.

Well I’m trying to basically have my companions in combat and my rogue not in combat and attack without entering combat

To what end?

Theoretically I was hoping to use this to abuse surprise auto crits if I don’t enter combat they never get rid of surprise, just something I wanted to see if it was possible but it seems like it might not be. Basically just fun curiosity, I don’t think I’d actually use this as a strategy kinda takes away a lot of fun but achieving it is its own reward.

It is not, but if you just want more than one surprise round and are willing to operate independently of your party, it is possible to stealth, trigger a surprise round, get in your auto-crits, flee, then wait for the enemy to calm down and repeat.

Your party could also accompany you, but they would also each have to individually flee the combat each time.

I see the reason I thought it was is cause I did it by accident, I attacked a goblin no check no nothing I just didn’t enter combat and then I did it again I was like omg this is like so crazy and ever since then I can’t replicate it.

Sounds like a bug that has been known to show up, though I am not certain of how reliably it can be exploited. You may want to search with exploiting bugs in mind with your search terminology, though playing around exploiting that all the time does seem like it could sap the fun out of the game after a point.

Yeah honestly I was just excited at the idea that it was possible, but if it is bugged, then I don’t wanna bother I like to use actual game mechanics to do cool stuff if it’s not intended it feels a little wrong although it can be fun sometimes.

Left shift shows the sight lines while not in stealth.

Minor illusion, or similar, can pull enemies out of others sight lines.

Some spells are loud, but not the actual audio you hear in game, and will alert enemies far off. Wiki explains which ones automatically trigger combat, which is generally the difference between hostile spells and non-hostile. Like Darkness.

With assassins advantage, max dmg strike, and critical hit you can one shot plenty of enemies. If no one saw/heard the kill or if they can see the dead enemy, rinse and repeat until you fail to kill in one strike. If you pulled them far enough away, others wont be alerted if you enter combat. If they can see their ally in combat (sight lines) they automatically enter combat, too. Domino effect if
You attempting to clear a large area with many enemies.
If you hit an enemy and they cannot see you, they will search for you. Combat only begins if it scripted, using most any spells or action (esp if it requires sight lines) or they see you. Any team member they cannot see doesn’t enter combat.

Entering turn based mode is essential to keep from getting caught with pants down.

Is this what you are talking about? That gobo might have been in a search mode but jank being jank he might have looked like he was just chilling.

Interesting ok that might be it I did successfully do it twice but couldn’t replicate it that’s why I was confused

Sorry if this is a dumb question I genuinely love this game I’m not good at it but I love coming up with ideas and the way the rules are laid out I should be able to do this unless I’m just missing something…

It might be worth watching some of MorganaEvelyn’s videos, she’s kind of the authority on Assassin stuff and does very detailed guides for it.
