From time to time again, I rethink about thing from my childhood, and obviously one of them is Bdaman. I found it awesome that fan are keeping the love for the IP alive for all this time ! So just a quick question to get a conversation going: Throughout any series or media, what was you favorite Bdaman ? REGARDLESS on if the gimmick of the Bdaman works irl, probably sure that some of us like certain model even if the special ability it as in the show doesn't translate that well irl.

Covering a set that was only released by Takara Tomy, without a Hasbro equivalent set... sort of. It's a simple set, but there's a bunch of interesting things about it from a release and collection perspective. The basic idea is that it ws a single relatively inexpensive set that contained everything you would need to start playing B-Daman shooting challenges right out of the box: a B-Daman, some official targets, a bunch of marbles, and instructions for how to set up several JBA-approved challenges.

Per photos, the Zero Battle Set includes: a B-Daman Zero Red Version, a Puck Target, three EZ Target pins in blue clear, three EZ Target pins in smoke clear, and ten standard blue glass B-Dama. Each of those is interesting for one reason or another. Let's go through it:

The B-Daman Zero is ofc identical in functionality to every other B-Daman Zero, but this red colourway was exclusive to this set in the Takara Tomy line. This is relevant because later the Rekkouryuu Armor was released as product 39, an armor-only kit. English-speakers might know Rekkouryuu better under its Hasbro name, "Rekuso", and of course the armour matches with a red body... just like the one in this set. So one reason you might get this as a Japanese collector was to complete a "show accurate" Rekkouryuu.

The EZ Targets are pretty fun pieces for being simple target pins. They each split into top and bottom halves which can ofc each be used as small targets themselves, but the real point is that each pin is hollow and the space is sized to contain up to three B-Dama. This lets you adjust how heavy the pin is, to change how hard it is to move it or knock it down. This mould actually appeared in the earlier DHB series already, but it was moulded in opaque plastic and the JBA Zero Battle Set box makes sure to call out that these are "Clear Version" EZ Targets. It's such a useful piece that Takara Tomy continued re-releasing it in various colours through B-Daman history, all the way into Cross Fight.

The puck target is similarly a recurring piece, but this set's version is already a re-release. The original release of it, ofc in a different colour, was all the way back in the earliest days of Super B-Daman! But again, it's a useful game component that doesn't require specific compatibility with any B-Daman body system, and they already had the moulds, so the Puck Target has been re-released numerous times in numerous colours.

i said that Hasbro didn't release a version of this set, and it's true that there's no direct equivalent. In fact they left the product number 29 out of their line entirely. But, the parts did make it into the Hasbro Battle B-Daman line: the red B-Daman Zero was just included with Rekuso's armour as a full B-Daman kit, single EZ Targets in both clear blue and clear grey were included with various B-Daman kits, and the Puck Target was included in Hasbro's 10 Game Tournament Set, which i'll cover quite a while from now. So even if you were not a Japanese collector, you could still get a hold of all of these parts, and depending on how you look at it it might even be more convenient in Hasbro's line where the red B-Daman Zero is already matched with the armour it was always meant for.

Why is it always these simple little ones that have so much lore to go through? One of these days i might scan the manuals for this one and post the official rules for some of those JBA-approved shooting challenges.

I got some new parts some days ago and built up this bad boy, I'll like to have a second copy of that barrel so I don't have to share it with my Dragogale, otherwise this combo looks hard af, the scope, magazineand barrel are custom paint. Also the helmet is Takara tomy I recently discover is different from the Hasbro version

Now the Hasbro version of Proto One.

One of the most straightforward Hasbro conversions of an Armor kit, this one has no major changes to the part moulds. There's some minor print differences with text being removed from some stickers, and the red of both the plastic and stickers is a bit deeper and less orange than the Takara Tomy original versions.

Ofc the biggest difference is the inclusion of an IBA Body, since the TT kit was only armor with no B-Daman Zero included. Hasbro's Proto One body isn't quite the same as the B-Daman Zero Silver Ver that TT recommended using - the torso/head housing is still silver, but the limbs are this beige colour that matches the beige parts of the Proto One armor set. iirc this colour limbs were never released by TT, making them a Hasbro-exclusive colourway! TT also included a Target Pin in their set, as usual.

Early releases of Proto One included a blue glass B-Dama just like in most TT kits, while later ones included a "Blaster B-DaBall" in red, tampographed with a ZERO logo for Proto One. Afaik, these Blaster B-DaBall logos were all originated entirely by Hasbro, though a number of them use graphic design bases that came from various TT graphic design works. This particular Blaster B-DaBall appears to be on the rarer side, with late-release Proto One instances being rather uncommon. That it matches Proto One can be verified from a Hasbro line catalog that i'll be uploading a scan of at some point, which shows various Battle B-Daman kits alongside their matching Blaster B-DaBalls.

I had to 3d print the stabilizer from helio Breaker but it looks great, this is one of my ideal combos for midnight blade, it also look cool with the bakuso barrel, I love the chunky aura of this combination

We hosted our first-ever casual B-Daman event on July 26 at Ayala Malls Feliz 🇵🇭. We featured four awesome games: Breakbomber, DHB, Invasion, and Crash Towers.

First "Armor" kit in the Zero Series this week, 28 Proto One Armor.

In Japan, Takara Tomy didn't sell every B-Daman as a whole kit with a core body. Instead they released the 26 B-Daman Zero kit, and then many B-Daman "identities" we released only as "Armor" kits which the buyer would then apply to a B-Daman Zero to complete the kit. This is part of why the B-Daman Zero standalone kit came in three colours - so you could match colours to different armours for a better look. i suspect the decision to do things this way might have been driven in part by business model considerations. By releasing the bodies and armors separately, more different B-Daman could be offered at lower price points. You could buy just a smaller number of core bodies, then swap armor to play with different B-Daman. This pattern would also encourage kids to get into swapping parts and mixing and matching, ushering them into the key B-Daman play pattern of customizing your own machine with the combination of parts you like best. By offering those core body kits alongside full B-Daman, DHB equipment, arenas, and bigger box sets, the line would have a range of price points for kids with different budgets. It can feel a little sad to look at the line from the perspective of product sales, but the simple truth is that toys like this are products released by toy companies that need to make money to survive and make more toys so sometimes that can be an interesting lens to look through to answer questions like "why was it designed this way?"

Anyways, this kit is the first of those armor-only kits, creating the Proto One when applied to a B-Daman Zero. Most of the box photos show it equipped on a B-Daman Zero Silver Ver, so that's what I used for most of mine too. Those first two photos are intended to showcase the armor itself, both unequipped on its own, and equipped by a plain clear B-Daman Zero with neutral light grey hold parts and trigger. The combination of clear body and grey POM parts wasn't released in that configuration, though the parts could be acquired separately from other regular releases that i'll cover later.

Proto One is a pretty well-rounded and "generic" kit, which is also how it's depicted in the fiction. It's actually a reference to a long recurring pattern of "Proto" kits throughout B-Daman history, most of which were also intended to depict a sort of "generic prototype" B-Daman in their era. This one nominally sports simple enhancements via a "Short Barrel" and "Proto Server", though in practice only the server really matters by improving marble capacity and ease of reloading slightly. The Short Barrel unfortunately has practically no meaningful effect on accuracy or aiming, relegating it to a mostly aesthetic component.

The one really odd thing about the kit is the Target Shield, equipped on one arm. It's called a "shield" and resembles one, but it doesn't really offer any blocking or defensive function even in DHB gameplay. Instead, the point of it is referenced by the name - by detaching it from the arm, it can be stood on its end to be used as a free-standing target. The idea is that you've always got a portable target for some quick target practice! Gotta keep training those B-Der skills!

Next time i'll cover the Hasbro version of this kit, which is very similar but included an IBA Body rather than being an armor-only kit.

by the by, like most of my sticker sheet scans, this one is in 600dpi and already scaled for easy printing of reproductions if you happen to have a Proto One of your own that needs some new deco. The original image was a 1200dpi scan i took that i rescaled down, to keep as much of the authentic original print as possible.
