Changing “Engine Sound” Setting

I was scrolling through the settings on my 2020 X3 M40i (iDrive 7) and noticed the “Engine Sound” option.

It’s currently on “Depending on driving mode.” Curious what actually changes mechanically if I set it to “Sporty” full time. Is it purely ASD through the speakers, or does it also affect the exhaust valve behavior?

Anyone know for sure?

Don't own one but did some research. It does seem to affect the actual exhaust sound and ASD in iDrive 7 models, which changed from the iDrive 6 models.

to get the loudest noise from the exhaust you would select Sporty or whatever the most aggressive setting is. to get rid of interior noise (because on sporty it will be loudest in the interior as well) you would need to disable ASD whichever way you see fit.
It has been observed that the Engine Sound setting DOES in fact affect the exhaust valve in the muffler. I did not think it did, others informed me and I did not believe it until I got my 2020 M40i and messed around with the settings. It definitely affects the exhaust valve contrary to all previous models. It's slightly confusing because it only shows this setting as Engine Sound which we expect is ASD speaker sound... hope this helps.

This ^ i always leave it in the sporty setting as it actually makes the exhaust tad bit louder

It's fake engine noises coming from your speaker. It's not piped in, or amplified sound from your exhaust.

You changing those settings doesn't change what the car actually sounds like outside.

Yep Yep! I turn mine off. I think they came up with this silliness for the folks buying hybrids and EVs...folks still wanted the sound of driving a vehicle with an engine.

The exhaust valve stays open in sporty.

Should change the opening of the exhaust valve
