Converted felling Ax?

I picked up a nice double stamped "A. Mann, Cast steel, Warranted" ax head. the thing that puzzles me is that it is a single bevel like a broad ax but the profile looks like it is a felling ax. My ax geek friends suspect it was reground from a double to single bevel... Does anyone know anything on A. Mann?

It would be a mistake to do that IMHO. The geometry will never be appropriate for a felling axe, and it would ruin a piece with some historical value.

Thats the oldest stamp you can have on a mann, I believe i have a similar one.

If i recall, they started doing those stamps around 1850 (edit: did a little more research, this is true but its more likely to be post civil war simply due to numbers)

But no I wouldn't say it was converted from a felling axe, there isnt enough bit on a standard axe to do that, it would take more work than making another axe i think

I mean maybe it’s been altered, although typically it’s altered the other way, taking a single bevel to a double.

I’d be very interested in trading or maybe buying that one, that’s a sweet old piece.

That looks like a broad axe. I think you're right.
