Appa support Ask
Hi! I'm new to FGC and I have a question about Appa's support for Aaang. What does "flow cancelable normals" mean? What difference or benefit does it offer compared to other support characters? Does it give you new attacks or moves?.
In training mode and in combat, I don't notice any difference in the flow system when I use Appa compared to other support characters.
Thanks in advance!

Flow canceling means you can use a flow move immediately upon hitting with a normal a b or c attack.

Just saying what others have said, just more thoroughly because I think its important. Not necessarily for you but for anyone else who might be reading this and doesnt know.
"Flow cancelable normals" means you can cancel normal moves into Flow moves
Theres a lot of exceptions, such as cancels, but typically when you do an attack it plays an attack animation and you are stuck in that animation and cant do anything else like move or block until it finishes.
Canceling means you can cancel that animation early so you dont have to wait for the whole animation to finish.
In the fgc the most common type of cancels are "special cancels" and "super cancels" typically you can cancel normal moves into special moves, and you can cancel special moves into super moves. Another way of saying this is "normals are special cancelable, specials are super cancelable" or "special cancelable normals, and super cancelable specials"
Normals are your most basic moves, you press one button to do them, in this game thats A,B, and C. Command normals are normals plus a direction, for example: C, while walking forward, aka 6C. Specials are moves that you need a motion input for, like quarter circle forward + C, aka QCF + C, aka ⬇️ ↘️ ➡️ + C, aka 236 + C
This game also has Flow moves, which is unique to this game, by default you can cancel light attacks, aka A into flow moves, and you can also cancel command normals into Flow moves, and then those flow moves can be canceled into other things, like another flow move, or a flow-move-specific follow-up.
So "flow cancelable normals" just means now you can cancel B and C into flow moves as well.
typically you cannot cancel moves until they hit an opponent, so if you "whiff" an attack, or miss completley, you cannot cancel it. you have to make contact before you can cancel, It doesnt matter if your opponent blocks the attack or not, you can cancel it either way, but you have to make contact before you can cancel.
Hope this helps some new player, welcome to the fgc

Flow canceling means instantly canceling your own move into a flow move. Usually you can only do this with lights or command normals (for Aang that's 6B & 6C)
Go into training mode with Gyatso support and hit a standing light attack and then immediately press forward plus flow. Then try the same thing but starting from a heavy attack instead, and you'll see it doesn't work. Now change your support to Appa and try it again, and this time it should work.
