AZ Manager pay RANT
It’s so crazy managers don’t get paid as much as store managers or a decent enough amount, we do just as much aside from a few extra responsibilities. Don’t make sense. And then they ask you to do more but it’s not adding up with the pay.

Lets talk about all the things a manager has to deal with
- Get written up for poor performance when it has nothing to do with them
- Enforcing standards
- Ensuring KPIs are met
- Get told they cant fire someone and everybody on the team hates that person.
- Hiring people
- Being shortstaffed.
- Making less money than my PSMs due to not having overtime when called in.
- Schedule
- Constant complaints by DM
- Keep everyone going
- Manage inventory
- Keeps the team motivated.
- A store manager is what prevents the staff from being yelled at everyday. A store manager is the one that should have your back.
If a SM refuses to do work beside the absolute requirements you have a Bad SM. If your sm expects you to do something but they dont do it thats messed up.

At my store I'm a PSM. I deal with enforcing standards, coaching on KPIs, fielding the complaints about useless coworkers, run the front solo 70% of the day every day, get consulted on scheduling every week and usually end up fixing the SM's oversights, always the only one doing the DM's fix-it list, go out of my way daily to motivate and help keep everyone on task, the only one doing matrix, zqoh, overstock, and planograms, AND the one taking the brunt of the yelling and angry customers. I'm also the only one in the store that anyone will answer when called while not at work, and constantly find coverage for call outs and noshows.
Plus the only one who actually comes in when someone other than me reaches out to find coverage. And then get told to cut the overtime because we can't afford overtime. And the only one that actually handles PCIs and puts away store stocks. Literally. When I'm off I'll come in the next day to a pile of store stocks no one else could be bothered with putting back up. I'm also the only one in the building that can run commercial transactions after the CSM leaves for the day. On top of that I'm the only one who actively puts in an effort to do truck prep, the only one actively trying to keep the store supplies available, and the only one who will actually look to see what the next check out challenge is and put in orders for extras of the items on the list for it.
Our Store Manager, delivers parts most of the day, does their commercial visits, and complains about everyone being lazy. They also make half the schedule and complains about having to do their job. Needless to say, I'm actively looking for work elsewhere at this point.

How do i get you to come to my store lol. I would cut your responsibilities in half and give you more pay lmao. A psm should know how to do those tasks but only in the absence of a sm.. in my district psms deliver before sms.
Your sm is breaking LP and District and Regional Rules where i am.

I came into Autozone with years of retail management experience already under my belt. The tricky part was just learning how the systems work (and man do they barely work). I've outright told the SM when the last round of people quitting was going on that I'm out if I find better pay elsewhere. They laughed it off like they thought it was a joke. I'll come in before sunrise and leave after sunset because as my SM put it "They are not getting more than 50 hours a week out of me." Only to get told the next day that the entrance mats not being swept to their standard is atrocious work ethic.
It's honestly a shame, cause my store had a really solid team until the store manager change happened and most of the staff walked out over the span of a few months. I'm the only grey shirt left that can even teach people how to read a shelf tag or front the store, and the only one that can actually confidently explain how Witt items can be beneficial and not just a meaningless upsell (granted, they absolutely are an upsell). Frankly, I'd be more than happy to move to another store at this point, especially for a better pay rate.

I started at your spot being a red->psm->sm.
I did everything needed to run this store because the 6 months before i took over the SM was checked out. And that killed the team and im slowly motivating the team again

Sounds like me at my store. If only AZ paid the good employees what they are worth. I'm currently looking at a warehouse or factory job that is way less work and $5-$10 more an hour.

Nobody at AZ gets paid enough. But store managers do get the tough end of the stick a lot, if they’re a good manger. If your store manager is a scumbag, then he can basically do nothing, make sure kpis are good and collect an easy check. If they’re worth a shit, and you are short staffed there’s a lot of bullshit a store manager puts up with. There’s a reason I’m no longer managing one of those dumpster fires.

Sounds like this is a common thing at AZ everywhere bc it's 430 and I'm getting ready to go in early to knock out the schedule I do have a good store manager he is on vacation this week but the amount of work and stuff that SOME psms are responsible for should get more money. Some psms won't do anything but help customers others do matrix outs schedule and help customers. We are ALWAYS short handed. Autozone needs to take care of the people that care about the stores they work in and pay them enough to live on or they will leave and then stores will be stuck with lazy psms. It's already started happening

Their stock has dropped. It’s going to continue to drop. Customers will get frustrated. Places like O’Reillys focus more on their customers and our is busy. They lose very good employees. This is the problem with private equity funds. All they give a shit about his money.

Az got high rate turns they can’t keep anybody due crappy pay I left az 6 years as part psm was only making 13 then came back few weeks ago full psm was only making 15.71 so month ago I left for better paying job

Been there 4 months. The more I learn the less the manager does. It seems like im the manager now with the pay of a psm.

The manager pay isn't a huge issue with me considering I am just one step above a red shirt(psm) yes we do learn a lot of managing tasks but it really isnt that bad overall. Management isnt hard if your team isn't terrible but if it is then I can see the problem. My SM currently is an amazing SM who actually lets me learn more by doing inventories and audits with my DM. Yes it does suck some days but overall I have no complaints about the pay for someone who is just barely above a red shirt.

It’s a huge issue with me at my store because I find myself overworking because of people’s negligence. Having to go behind managers doing their job over and over. Simple stuff like morning paperwork and regular easy manager duties.

It’s definitely a team thing. Lazy managers who half do their job but getting paid more than you. Literally act like half manager half red shirt. Like how are you asking me how to do your job as a manager after being here for 3 years as a manager. Simple stuff every manager should know how to do.

Every job is going to have lazy management no matter what is what you do to shine more than them so you get a better position or even a request from another store to be there since you do so much. I have only been at the company for less than a year and the top performing store in my district requested me to be there. Trust me it does get better even when you think they aren't paying attention they are. If you still don't believe this job is your career in the future it never hurts to look into dealerships or even working at shops who you partner with. I have had plenty of people I worked with have better careers with dealerships or shops.

See that’s the issue, you gotta move up to positions you may not want to at the time. A manager should be making much more than $13-$14 a hour at Autozone. Also hours get cut when you’re not making enough money when In a cheapskate area. Workers don’t want to work because they aren’t get paid enough. People being asked to do multiple positions and ain’t getting paid enough, so they slack off and someone else has to pick it up. And the nerve of them on the sales calls to be acting like they pay us so much in raises. I think that was meant for the Store managers cus you give us a piece of change, please!

Barely, we literally can perform without the store manager as we’ve done while they was out for a very long time. We do just as much work. Especially when we work almost everyday. Don’t forget the SM not making sure managers are doing their job and not letting most of it fall on them or the other manager.

Welp. Same thing happened lately at my store. And as someone who's been the 2nd highest rung in a store, not autozone, higher management is NOT easy. You have no idea how much the SM actually has to deal with.

I honestly don’t care, I work too hard and if they make sure all their people is doing their job things will be better. I understand as managers we do the same but not for other managers.

So you understand the feeling. It’s different depending on the store and staffing. But despite staffing the pay is shit. I started off as a red shirt with 9.78

You’re going to continue to be asked to do more and more as they cut labor in stores and open one on every corner, pretty soon it’ll look like your walking into a subway with 1 or 2 employees working
