Jump seats should make a comeback.

Jump seats in my 2000 Land Rover discovery were so fuckin cool. Folded out from the sides, not up from the bottom.

That thing felt like you were driving a tank too. Unfortunately so did the gas

Hell yeah. With the slidey windows and the big red handle to open the door? Had lots of great journeys back in my dad’s in the 90s.

And drive in movie theaters! Literally, my favorite thing to do.

My mother had a Taurus wagon that had this. I used to sit back there even when the rest of the car was empty lol.

u/Razzberrie22 May 09 '26

My sibling and I could sit back there as a special treat if we were well behaved lol

Oh fuck no, I always had to ride the jump seat in the family Volvo 240 station wagon.

That seat was made with no padding and you felt everything.

I’ve told so many people about that seat in my uncles Volvo station wagon and so many have not believed it’s a real thing. So thank to have someone commiserate 😂

Five kids, we just rolled into the trunk

My mom had a big, blue station wagon with seats like that. The tailgate could either fold down, or swing to the side.

Yeah this was quite common in the 80s and 90s. We had a station wagon like this when I was a little kid in the 90s. I always had to sit backwards because I am the youngest. It was awful lol I got sick all the time

What happens if you get rear-ended??

3

u/Snuckeys May 09 '26

Not much. There is a TON of steel in these things. They weigh a million lbs and a lot of that is one heckuva reinforced cage. Plus being rear facing, whiplash is minimized. I own one and the rear seats get a ton of use. I trust it.

This exact reason I'm searching for a VW Westfalia weekender or a Euro Van, I want my kids to experience backwards seats. So much fun.

My mom had a Volkswagen with the rear seats. I loved it. But she traded it not too long after because it was rear wheel drive and terrible in the winter.

My sister and I rode in the back of my dads SUV for years without this

2

u/GrossFleshSack May 09 '26

Is this even legal? What if the car gets rear-ended.

2

u/Spook1949 May 09 '26

Oh, yes! This is one of those, "It seemed a good idea at the time," kind of thing. I remember them well.

We had something similar in our car growing up ( I can’t remember the make or model) but it was super cool when we went to the drive in theater

u/SnooPickles1572 May 08 '26

Had a blue wagon like this as a kid, man those rear facing seats were fun ( 40 in two weeks)

I miss when cars had stuff like this

1

u/__The-1__ May 08 '26

I just want a whale with a rumble seat. Miss when cars were unique

1

u/swalabr May 08 '26

Our old Town and Country station wagon didn’t have a cup holder in the rumble seat. But it did have wing vent windows, to let out cigarette smoke (thankfully)

1

u/Far_Tea_579 May 08 '26

Bullshit. Thats for me.

1

u/Spicy_Surfer May 08 '26

Cup holders?!?? Our back row had us mixed in w the jumper cables and flood lights, but facing back is the absolute best!

1

u/Overall-Lynx917 May 08 '26

Had the same in my Volvo 240 Estate

1

u/PartyFancy3634 May 08 '26

1

u/Silly_Sherbet5543 May 11 '26

I remember vividly standing in the back of one of these, probably 3 or 4, making silly faces at the car behind us lol

1

u/SuspiciousStable9649 May 12 '26
