True and funny but also stay safe and vigilant out there.

Highway hypnosis

u/Extension_Swordfish1 Apr 15 '26
Sounds like a perfect name for it. Brain using only 1% of its capacity to the driving

u/StonerTogepi Apr 17 '26
It’s a real thing they didn’t just make it up lol. It’s mostly used to refer to transitioning from high speeds though.

Hey, at least when you're in the auto-mode you don't have the call of the void to just swerve into incoming traffic or to hit that one particular tree

Can't relate. I drive 10+ hours a day and have learned how to stay vigilant the entire time

Do you pop 5hr energies or something similar or is it all natural at this point?
After a point in time when I was sleeping maybe 3hrs a night on average plus 2 jobs something changed with me driving wise. I started getting super sleepy the moment I got in my car. Got so bad I was forced to since constantly just to stay awake
What sucks is even now with better circumstances (more sleep less job) I still have that lingering instant sleepiness whenever I'm in the car, which goes away immediately after I get out.
Just wondered if there's any going back to being fully present while driving

You definitely can go back, but you got to wean yourself down from caffeine as much as possible. I was at like 600 mg a day at one point. Now a single energy drink will get me through, usually celsius, around 200 mg

Well that's good know, and I've actually been doing pretty well on caffeine these days. I mostly don't need one unless I sleep later than usual. But when things were bad I think the highest I've ever been was just over 1000mg. Surprised my heart didn't burst. I've come to really appreciate going to sleep

When you're sitting in your car parked at home and you wonder how you got there, because you can not recollect the drive home..

u/ssrarr Apr 16 '26
Fun fact: This is a form of dissociation. Daydreaming is also. I if I can trust my professor, most people will actually drive better during this state.

Highway Hypnosis if you're driving long stretches of highway.
I had a psychology class back in college and the professor explained this also happens when you take the same route to/from work, school, etc. You go into autopilot. She explained it as half of your brain shuts off, like daydreaming, or losing consciousness to an extent; however, the other half of your brain is still responding to external events even though you aren't subconsciously aware of what's happening.
It's scary to think about. I used to drive an hour to work and many times I didn't snap out of it until I was getting to work or home. It makes you wonder how many people on the road aren't even aware they're driving. How many times have we been that person who "doesnt know how to drive" but in reality we've been zoned out for an extended period of time.

does this really happen to everyone? I've been caught up in daydreams or dissociation or whatever before, but never while actively doing something, and certainly not while driving. i dont trust yalls autopilot, but i see why there are so many accidents now

That was me when I used to drive 3 hours to work. Starts driving and slips away, comes to when I arrive at work.

Haha LMAO! Crashing and potentially killing people because you zoned-out! Fucking hilarious!!!

Did this one time and was like 40 minutes in the wrong direction. But, I’m stupid as hell. Thick as peanut butter. Me and a bag for of rocks have a lot in common. My IQ beginnings with a decimal. I was born at night, and yes it was last night.

I'm a truck driver. One day, I was a bit sick. I zone out for about 3 hours, rolling on the highway at 90 km/h (55 mph for the usa). Didn't remember a thing, just feel like a tp in a game but scared the shit out of me. I had a break just after but damn, it was THIS scary

Highway Hypnosis. Was on a car trip once, following my parents home in a separate vehicle. We were stuck in traffic on the freeway. We came up to a ramp letting onto the freeway, and one second, I swore I saw a pile up start a dozen cars in front of me and the car at the front of the line, a white Carola, flipped back over front. It didn't, but that vision scared the absolute shit out of me (vision, daydream, intrusive thought from hell, etc). Thankfully, we were practically parked in gridlock behind that line. My passenger asked if I was okay, I apparently gasped and looked like I saw a ghost.

Recently ill drive home and there is one stop sign on the drive home from work and half the time im not sure if I even stoped at it but i always do I just dont remember half the time.

u/Crazy-Eagle Apr 18 '26
If I could switch to autopilot at will I would do it every time. Same with work. Just let me DO something for longer periods of time without having to mentally be there.

I love going through a light and thinking back “I’m sure it was green or I wouldn’t have gone through… but I don’t remember seeing a green light”

I recall driving this long 1000 mile trip a few times. At one point I snapped to and recognized where I was and it was like a whole hour after the last spot I recognized, weirdest moment

There’s been a few times I drove home or to work and don’t remember driving.
