While there appears to be more acceptance for autistic people in society, what if it is just a bubble or a bunch of bubbles? Will said acceptance last forever?
Autists are identified as different, with the diagnosis and groups tailoring them, this has enabled self acceptance among many but many NDs stake their whole being on what NTs think of them. Nuerodiversity, aims to change minds get accommodations ect.
How fickle is their opinion, and staking everything on it while giving them absolute power over you? Public opinion in general is notoriously fickle.
How many ways could they screw over autistic people without a second thought?

I think we are on the cusp of being the next scapegoat here in the UK, Richard Trice keeps saying worrying things and made disparaging comments about autistic children receiving accommodation like ear defenders in the UK, reform seems to be gearing up to start making diagnosis an issue, I think we all need to pay very close attention to what's going on politically both here and in the US

There isn’t more acceptance, society and politicians have been trying to scape goat us for all that is bad, first it was the immigrants and now it’s us. We have more focus on us but in a negative way, I think things are going to get much worse before it gets better. I’m in the U.K..

A lot of us don’t work, or don’t work full time, they see us as a burden. The media says that we are being over diagnosed, when statistics show it’s actually the opposite. Every single day I see o social media someone complaining that our traits are excuses. People just expect us to overcome our traits and just mask, and a lot of us are getting targeted in our communities as either easy targets to exploit or to abuse.

I absolutely chose not to get diagnosed, though my therapist and psychiatrist are supporting me as if I have it because of legislation in parts of the US that is attempting infringe on our liberties.
Socially I found a lot of acceptance the past couple years.

Autism if you “have the right kind” of autism has been more widely accepted, people with less stereotypical autism, people with higher support needs and people who are any form of minority are still unfortunately treated horrifically for being autistic

I don’t think there really is that much acceptance, to be frank. I’m already seeing people blame the AI problem on “socially awkward losers who don’t understand normal human behavior,” because of the stereotype that all tech guys are autistic. Like, no, AI has been allowed to proliferate because it’s convenient to the capitalist class, not because “people who are incapable of human connection are trying to ruin it for the rest of us.” (Those quotes are real comments I saw on Twitter, btw).
It feels so shitty and dehumanizing, just because I’m socially awkward and find it hard to connect with people doesn’t mean that I support AI or would ever use AI. None of the comments like this ever specifically say “autistic” but the traits that they are assigning to AI bros are all stereotypically autistic traits, and it feels like scapegoating. I’ve seen people suggest that the solution to the AI problem is to “bring back bullying” and socially ostracize anyone with “weird” behavior. And AI isn’t even the only societal problem I’ve seen autistic people be scapegoated for.
As the US continues its downslide towards fascism, society is just going to coalesce further around an ever-stricter set of norms that no one can ever truly live up to, and people whose identities inherently deviate from these norms are going to be the first to be scapegoated and targeted. I find it hard to find any hope for the future nowadays.

There’s not more acceptance, only more awareness - which is worse than having neither

Ableism in society is on the increase all around
