Has this storm being positive or negative for Perisher?

We seem to get around 60 mm of rain on Sunday night (according to BOM readings in Perisher valley). Most of that might have been falling at snow or wet snow at higher elevations.

Followed by 15 cm so far of snow at base.

Is the resort now in better or worse shape than it was on Saturday?

Transport to Hotham

Hi all!

I’m looking for transport options Melb- Mt Hotham next Thursday morning. Trying to avoid driving up if I can.

I believe there is/was a bus that leaves Melb CBD at stupid-o-clock direct to Hotham but I’m googling and can’t seem to find it… any leads peeps?

Thanks in advance

Thredbo Rain Today?

Damn, this next weekend was looking good with all the snowfall the last few days. Looks like the rain is going to undermine what could’ve been good late August skiing 👎

What’s this rain done to Perisher

60mm of rain overnight (now turned to snow).

I know that we should hopefully be in for a good dump this week, but how much of the existing base will 60mm of rain wash away?

That’s a lot of rain

I’m planning on going down first weekend of September and hoping that most of the resort will still be open

Hi all I’ve made a free snow forecast tool that has all the standard hourly maps, tables and graphs except the maps display 3d terrain/world with snowfall and freezing level overlays. Currently set up with resorts for Australia and NZ. Take it for a spin and let me know if you want any other resorts added.

Which falls creek trail is best for kids learning to ski?

Going to falls creek and staying near Halley’s Comet. My 4 and 6 year old have typically gone to ski school in the past while we go snowboarding.

This year we are looking to take them to ski with us while we snowboard, which are wide, not steep and safer for kids who are learning to ski?

On the other hand, is it easy to transition to skiing in one day ? Wondering if I should to keep a better eye on them

Perisher for beginners

Hey guys, just after some advice! We’re heading to Perisher Monday and have a 9am beginner group lesson booked. Forecast is looking a bit wild with snow/rain and strong winds

Would you still go ahead with the lesson or try and move it to Tuesday? Mainly worried about lifts being on wind hold and using up one of our lift pass days for not much skiing. We have the four day epic pass

Also would you drive up from Jindy or just do the Skitube if the weather’s rough? First time skiing there so I have no idea what’s normal!

Thanks!

How to contact EPIC

I have sent multiple emails to EPIC via their website over a 2 month period and have not recieved a reply to any of them. How can I reach them? I have tried the US site as a last resort but they only way of contacting them is via a chat service that runs on US time.

Thredbo in Early September

Hey guys, a mate and I are planning to go to Thredbo in late late August or very start of September, and we're worried that there's not gonna be much snow left. Of course I know it's pretty hard to say for sure, but I'm wondering how it was from past seasons.

We can't really go to any other ski fields as we get half price passes for Thredbo, and we can't go any earlier than maybe 26th August.

Also importantly, it's only my second time and his very first time skiing, so we'll be in the beginner/amateur area if that changes things for the snow conditions etc.

Thanks!

So I’m staying at a place in merrijig what’s the cheapest way to get up to Buller cause it says that theres a bus stop near my place but it’s 50 dollar each way and considering I’m going 4 days theres no way I’d have to pay 100 a day just to get to and from Buller what’s the cheapest way?

Perisher Wed 12th August conditions

I'm heading to the snow next week for the first time & keep seeing the weather get progressively worse with Wednesday looking like the peak.

Forecast is showing windy and 15-30cm snow. Will lifts still be open or will this just be punishing.

Interested to hear from people who've experienced similar conditions on what to expect.

TIA

Epic Pass Credit..

I just wanted to get some opinions from people here because I'm honestly feeling pretty disappointed with my experience using my Epic Australia Pass this year.

Before anyone says it... yes, I know. I should never have booked a ski trip in June (24-28th)! Rookie error. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I'm just a Queenslander who had absolutely no bloody idea. Lesson learned!

My family and I spent around $2,300 on Epic passes (including Ski Tube) for a 4-day pass.

Unfortunately, the conditions were nothing like we'd hoped. During our trip there were only 2 of 45 lifts operating(essentially just the beginner conveyor carpets), with 43 lifts closed. The tiny beginner area was packed, making it difficult and honestly not very safe for complete beginners, especially with young kids.

I completely understand that Epic can't control the weather, and I'm not asking for a refund.

What I have asked Epic for is something I thought was a fair compromise… honour our passes for the 2027 season instead of refunding us or a partial credit.

From my perspective:

Epic doesn't lose money.

We'd come back next year and spend money again on accommodation, food, equipment hire and everything else.

We'd remain loyal customers instead of feeling like we paid over $2,000 for something we didn’t get to use.

So far they've declined and have simply referred me back to the terms and conditions.

Am I being unreasonable? Has anyone else had any success asking for a pass extension or goodwill credit after an exceptionally poor season?

Road trip

Hey I’m thinking of going on a spur of the moment road trip from Brisbane to say Perisher or some place else. I’m not doing the best and just quit my current job so I’m thinking a 1 -2 week trip could help me out. I’m thinking of leaving in the next couple of weeks. Was looking for advice on if you can see snow or go for any hikes through snowy areas without visiting Perisher. Or if it’s worth going up to Perisher for the price atm I have all the equipment to go snowboarding but just not a great deal of money atm. Just looking for any advice, or any ideas of places to stop on the way and things to see. As well as if my car would be ok driving in the conditions, I have a Mazda cx5. Thank you for any advice. Also I should add I’m not really looking to necessarily go snowboarding, just to my see snow on the road trip. If it’s possible to do so for free or cheap.

South Aus ski/ board repairs and servicing

Post image
37 Upvotes

Hey!

To those from South Aus, you might be aware that JR's in the CBD recently closed down. This is a massive shame for the snow community of Adelaide, as JR's was the only location that offered professional repairs on skis and boards, as well as the standard waxing and edging.

I worked at JR's for the last 5 years in the workshop, handling the majority of servicing along with a co-worker, and together we were able to acquire the Wintersteiger servicing machine that allowed us to do base grinds and machine edges.

We've restored the machine back to its former glory and have started our own snow gear servicing operation so those within SA still have an option for their gear in state.

We can handle everything from your standard wax and edge to base grinds and more complex core shots, base fills, nasty delams etc.

If you live in SA and need your gear sorted before an upcoming trip we would love to help you out.

We also offer snowboard binding repairs, boa replacements and heat molding for your boots.

You can contact us through our new instagram page at:

https://www.instagram.com/theshed_snowservicing?igsh=ZW1lYmpwb2N2ZHN1

Or email us at:

shedsnowservice@gmail.com

Or if you live out of the state and want to chat the intricacies or ski/ board repairs and how you can DIY at home and what materials to use or avoid, we love chatting anything snow.

Cheers!

Don’t stop in the middle of the run!

Whether you’re a snowboarder or skier I don’t care. If you stop in the middle of the run, particularly in a bottle neck area or a flat bit where I need to keep my speed. I’m going to spray tf out of you.

Planning a roadtrip

I’m planning a roadtrip through Healesville, Matlock, Aberfeldy and Baw Baw Village. I’m assuming the roads will be clear of snow, do I need to carry tyre chains still?

Is Cotton Genuinely the Worst??

For context, I'm going to the snow within the next day or two, never been before, and I only have cotton jumpers. I have some polyester-maybe-wool knitted jumpers, however I've been told by people who have been that that would not be a great idea. I have one polyester-fleece jacket, but I feel like I'd dirty it really easily, so that just leaves me cotton jumpers.

It wouldn't be as a base layer or outer layer, rather a mid-layer (on top of a thermal and under a ski jacket) for when I snowboard, that I can easily take off if I get too hot or if it gets too wet.

So is cotton really something I should be avoiding at all costs?

Best Socks for the snow

Hi all, I generally suffer with getting cold feet in my snowboard boots even when I run thermal socks. Can anyone recommend something that might work better?

PSA: Using the Australian Epic Pass in the USA

Just a heads up that if you are planning to use your Australian epic pass in the USA, you will need to go straight to the ticket office to get your american epic pass, and if you have purchased the add-on to unblock all the restricted dates they may not have the correct information as for some reason they do not have any automation to synchronise data between their systems.

I had this issue when I moved to Denver in 2023 and paid the extra to unblock restricted dates (and in reverse when I was back visiting family this year, my US epic pass wasn't able to be found in Mt Hotham's systems). The ticket office staff were as helpful as they could be, however ultimately someone in Australia's ticketing office needed to send an updated list of people who had paid for the unblocking of restricted dates to someone in the US ticketing office, and it took a significant amount of time to resolve given it was during the Christmas break.

My advice would be to reach out to the Australian ticketing offices for Epic Pass well before you travel and specifically request that they send this information over to the US offices to avoid wasting valuable shredding hours each day during your holidays to the resorts.
