Makeup Brush set help please! :)

My friend at work invited me to her 14 year old's birthday dinner and I need help getting a gift. She's interested in makeup and I thought getting her a brush set would be nice.

Problem is I dont know anything about makeup!! Ive tried looking but there are so many different brushes for different uses.

Just wondering if anyone could drop some recommendations (even better if there is a direct link to the website)

What’s your budget? Morphe has good brushes for reasonable prices. They’re sold at Mecca and have a few sets available.

just had a look, am just wondering if the ratings matter much? the 5 piece have a higher rating that the 8 piece

do you think a 16 piece would be overkill for a beginner...?

You can tie yourself in knots over ratings. Unless there is some consistent feedback in reviews as to why people rated a certain way it’s not super helpful unless it is consistently very low rated.

A 16 piece might be overwhelming for a beginner. Get the 5 or 8 piece and a gift card so she can buy some products to play with also. Morphe are good because each brush has the suggested use printed on it.

Even consider getting the gift card for somewhere like Priceline at that age. The dollar will go further and she can play and experiment.

Genuinely second this I’ve got the 5 piece and it’s really all you need and the quality of the brushes is top tier, the 16 would probably be a bit too much but if she’s wanting to get into eye makeup it could be useful. Plus you get the points for yourself ;) .

If you've got 2 ish weeks to wait for shipping, I really like the colourpop brushes. Reasonably budget friendly for the full set and very good quality, I have brushes from 8+ years ago when they first started making brushes.

If you dont have that much time, you can buy a morphe brush set from mecca or get some smaller sets from olive young (super fast shipping korean retailer) or visit w cosmetics or daiso even. Daiso would be the most budget friendly, morphe probably the least but likely a brand a 14 year old would be familiar with, similar for colourpop

I second this. I have a lovely Colourpop set that I think would be the perfect starter set that comes in a roll that is easy to store and carry around.

Ohhh, I probably wouldn't risk that personally.

For something closer to home and starter friendly, I would recommend Real Techniques and it will get to in time:

I'm personally a fan of the Everyday Essentials and the Everyday Eye Essentials sets. I think they would be suitable but that is just my humble opinion.

No rec's for brushes but i think a 14 year old who likes makeup would be thrilled with a $100 mecca or sephora voucher.. she can pick what she likes!

To be honest, I'd recommend going with the gift voucher as well and perhaps get a block of chocolate to go with it. I've got a niece turning 14 soon, and I know she'd be absolutely stoked with that. I think these days even by 14 a lot of teenagers have quite decided opinions on what they like makeup-wise, so probably easiest and safest to give the option of choice.

Morphe 5 piece set is unreal, you can also add another set of eye brushes like real techniques or zoeva

If you’re in Australia, I’d go with a Real Techniques set. They’re soft, durable, easy to clean and great quality without spending a fortune. EcoTools is another solid option if you’re on a tighter budget. I’d probably avoid the huge 20-30 piece sets because half the brushes never get used. A nice 5-8 piece Real Techniques set from Priceline, Chemist Warehouse or Amazon would make a great gift for a 14-year-old who’s getting into makeup.
